How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Parts were as exactly as described and the installation was seamless. The help videos are an excellent resource for preparing for the work.

Awsome, holding up very well considering the multiple times a season it gets sumberged in salt water.

by:

This is a great jack. We have now converted all six of out trailers over to this jack.

by:

It's strong looking and heavy. I'll see how it holds up on the boat trailer, but I paid more for a Fulton, so I don't expect problems. Etrailer is fast, and ]very easy to deal with.

by:

Cap was damaged in shipment but thanks to Chelsey S. at etrailer the replacement was on its way and arrived in no time! Only took ten minutes to install jack! Thank you etrailer, Samantha and Chelsey! Great product, great service and great company!

by:

Really nice when you get the quality product that you were looking for in the ads! I was upgrading from single wheel to dually for my boat trailer. It rolls much easier with the dually wheels on the jack, and the entire product is OEM quality. Really happy!
My old jack was moved to my son-in-law's trailer, which had a very old beat up jack that needed to be replaced.

by:

This jack is perfect for my Atv trailer. Finally a jack that can handle the weight, moves smoothly. A jack on steroids!

by:

I agree with that others said about shipping. The box arrived broken and taped, but everything was still inside. The product looks well built, installed properly, and worked much easier than the old jack.

Other than shipping, the product appears to be as advertised.

by:

Installation was a breeze. Works like a charm - Good value and easy installation !! However, I am using this jack in saltwater for my fishing boat. I will submit more comments after a few months to report how the jack is holding !

Awesome product! No more dealing with cheaply built trailer jacks. Easy install.

Fast Delivery- Solid Product!

by:

Melissa from e-trailer steered me in a great direction with this trailer jack selection. Part arrived on time and was installed in about 10 minutes. Perfect replacement for the original Fulton 2003 welded jack that came with the trailer.

Melissa was outstanding in her support and even "triple" checked that the jack was exactly what I was looking for.

e-trailer should be proud of their service and the quality of their products and personnel. KUDOS!

Works like a charm! Thanks

So far so good. I mounted this to a Triton 24’ enclosed aluminum snowmobile trailer with four sleds inside and it seems to be doing just fine. We have loaded this trailer fully twice when moving houses and this Jack is taking the weight fine. The previous Shelby unit was pure garbage. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good strong unit for a reasonable price. Just stay on top of lubricating it.

This has been holding up well to the road salt, severe winters, and constantly being outside year round. I would strongly recommend this jack to anyone looking for a durable and strong tongue jack. Finish is fading a bit but no actual rust yet which is great!

by:

Well...I over-bought on this! However, I don't regret it one bit. The jack I replaced was awful: Worn-out loose, low amount of travel, just old. This Fulton is beefy and was a breeze to install. No issues, just bolted right on. The lift is smooth and high. The double-wheel caster makes rotating the trailer super easy. It swings up and solidly locks into place. An excellent bang for the buck and peace-of-mind.

Got rid of the boat with the trailer. Know what the first thing the new owner saw? The jack! He liked how beefy it was for the job it had and its lifting range. It works great, no complaints.

by:

I received the trailer jack in good shape and installed it in about 10 minutes. Just takes 4 bolts.

Now my trailer is back in business.

It is working fine. I would buy another one when I need to replace an old one.

by:

Once I replaced the single wheel jack from the front of my trailer the maneuverability of my boat was significantly improved. No more getting stuck on pavement seams and the wheel pivots without having to kick it to the direction I want. Awesome for getting into the garage from my long driveway.

Speaking of which, I can now easily get my boat up the driveway from the narrow, car-packed street using the Draw-Tite front hitch. Sturdy, fits up quickly and perfectly.

by:

I built a 12' x 16' shed supported on 8 concrete piers in my backyard last summer and used my 4' x 8' trailer with this "Fulton Bolt-Thru Swivel Marine Jack with Dual Wheels - Sidewind" fastened to the trailer tongue. The double wheels made maneuvering the trailer by hand much easier on the grassy yard. I'm a 170 lb 72 year old man.

by:

I put this dual wheel trailer jack on my snowmobile trailer. Although I didn't need the 1,500 lbs lift, the dual wheel made it easy to move my trailer by hand through the gravel and mud in my driveway. Its high quality and easy to use with a smooth crank motion.

by:

I bought this Fulton trailer jack to replace a lesser quality jack that came with my 12' box trailer, which ultimately failed under normal use. This duel wheeled jack is of much better quality and heavier duty. Installed in under 10 minutes and very pleased with its superior performance so far. I have purchased items in the past from etrailer.com and I am very impressed with your excellent service, quality products and delivery of my purchases in record times. Also have found your prices for most items offered to be far less than your competition and free delivery a bonus !

by:

Sturdy, easy to install. Works great. I have purchased several eTrailer jacks and I am happy with the product. Mounted it on a trailer. The two wheels make it easy to move around.

by:

The Fulton dual wheel trailer lift wheel was as advertised. Easy installation and all parts needed present. Due to product weight and angles the box was damaged but the product had no damage. Easy web page to order from.
I particularly like the fact that the worm gear can be lubricated through a grease zerk. One other defining reason to purchase is the fact that the metal parts are treated for saltwater and the salt air environment that I live in. Time will tell but a good sale point.

by:

I recently needed to replace the jack on my boat trailer and decided to look at the Fulton brand since I had previously replaced my winch with one of theirs and absolutely love the winch. I was impressed by the free 2-day shipping being offered by Etrailer and decided to go with the Fulton jack. It arrived in 2 days and was a breeze to install. I would recommend Etrailer and Fulton to anyone looking for quality equipment and a quality company.

by:

Good product

by:

I ordered a replacement jack for my boat trailer. The entire process was simple and straight forward. I received feedback as the order was processed. The jack I received was exactly what I needed and ordered. I can whole heartedly recommend etrailer to anyone looking for replacement parts

  • Replacement for Dutton Lainson Jack on 2008 Ranger 621 Boat Trailer
For a replacement jack I recommend the Fulton Bolt-Thru Swivel Marine Jack # FXPD15L. This has a 1,500 lb lift capacity and the dual wheels you're looking for. The jack has a bolt-on installation and fits frames up to 3" x 5". The Z-Max 600 zinc finish gives you a 600 hour salt spray rating and it comes with a limited 5-year warranty. It also comes in black # F27CR but with a powder coat finish instead of the zinc.

I spoke with my contact at Fulton and he stated that what you are describing is a symptom of the jack screw inside the jack seizing up. You have a couple of options. • Recommended Replacement Jack for 2300 lb Pop-Up Camper
You did just fine! What you'll need is a jack that can handle the tongue weight of the trailer, not its entire weight. A trailers tongue weight is typically 10-15% of its total weight, so in your case the highest capacity you'll really need is about 350 lbs. That being said, choosing a trailer jack is one instance where you'll want to go for the overkill as far as capacity goes. A higher rated jack will be more heavily constructed and because of the reserve capacity it won't need to work...

  • Bolt-On Side-Mount Dual Wheel Trailer Jack Recommendation for Utility Trailer
Since you want a side-mount jack that will work on dirt/grass surfaces I suggest a dual-wheel type such as the Fulton # FXPD15L. Dual wheel will spread the weight over a larger area and help the jack function on such softer surfaces. The jack offers bolt-on installation, a hefty 1500-lb tongue weight rating, plunger-pin swivel operation and 12-inches of lift.
