You'll Need More than Just Zinc to Fight Rust

The simple truth is that salt can be highly corrosive to metal when exposure lasts for an extended period of time. So, the more you tow around it, the more you need to protect your trailer from it.

A rusted trailer jack welded to a trailer frame

The TUFFPLATE finish on this jack helps to ensure that it doesn't end up looking like the one pictured above. TUFFPLATE offers 3 layers of corrosion protection. The first layer is a specially formulated zinc finish. The second layer is chromate. Finally, a sealer puts a third barrier between the jack's gleaming good looks and anything that can contribute to rust, like freshwater or even saltwater exposure.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. Dutton-Lainson's TUFFPLATE finish lasted nearly 500 hours in the salt spray test before the first appearance of rust (about 30% longer than a traditional powder coat finish). As for the first appearance of white corrosion, it performed about as well as typical zinc finishes.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well this jack resists rust and corrosion.

How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

Great replacement for my rusted jack. Fast delivery and arrived super fast. Highly recommend etrailer for all your boating, rving and truck needs.

by:

The box came damaged. it looks like it still works. The fastners were not in the bag and loose. Luckily they were all there.

by:

etrailer is far and away the best internet business I have done business with. Great service, extremely fast shipping. Exceptional shipping information on the website. I am recommending this company to all.

by:

Ed was excellent. The trailer jack was sent quickly and works perfectly for my application. I have in on a Nautique boat trailer

by:

I used this on a 2011 ranger trail that has the center mount jack. I removed the outer tube and put my center mount tube on. Worked great

by:

Have not used it yet. Need to cut the welded Fulton bracket off my trailer
first. The trailer looks heavy duty; time will tell how durable it is.

by:

its the one i needed, so i didn't have to send it back. big plus salesman and i figured it out.

by:

Perfect fit for my trailer. And etrailer kept me up to date with shipping status on the backorder. Really great customer service. Thank you!

I launch at a low angle saltwater ramp. In some tides, my jack gets dunked. This jack has held up better than either of my prior two jacks. I have the mitre gear kit on standby if this jack ever gets sticky, but so,far haven’t needed it. I’m impressed.

by:

This one is actually to tall for my tow dolly. Even in the lowest postion it is still to high to put the dolly into the hinch ball. So i have to lift the dolly up, swivel the jack and then lower the dolly into the ball.

by:

Well-made jack, perfect replacement for my 27 year old Atwood! I had to research carefully to find one made in the U.S. as most of these jacks are not. I have found the Dutton Lainson products to be well made. Most but not all of their jacks are U.S. made so be careful choosing if you're picky like me. And great shopping experience with etrailer. All info on the product page which is very helpful. I placed my order and got an email an hour later that it had already shipped! On top of that it arrived a day early! Nice job etrailer!

by:

Jack is much better built than the one it’s replacing! Very happy with this purchase!!!

by:

This fit properly and helps compensate for a narrow opening (top crank was important). Quick delivery also helped.

by:

Just what I needed. It worked great!

by:

This jack replaces a Dutton jack that must be at least 30 years old and exclusively in a salt water environment. The older jack was structurally perfect but for the handle which rusted and finally snapped. Unable to replace the handle, I ordered the replacement. I expect the new one will perform handle equally well. The eight inch wheel and caster is a plus, since the 14’ Maritime Skiff must be positioned by hand at times.

  • Where is the etrailer Swivel Jack # MJ-1500B-DWL Manufactured?
While we do have some great U.S.A.-made boat trailer jacks, the etrailer Round Swivel Marine Jack # MJ-1500B-DWL is manufactured in China. However, for a super close U.S.A.-made model, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Swivel Marine Jack # DL67MR. This jack comes with the same 1,500 pound weight capacity and a similar bracket heights of 13" (retracted) and 23" (extended). As far as compatibility, the jack fits trailer tongue heights up to 24-3/4" inches tall and square trailer tongues up...

We definitely have some trailer jacks you can use as a replacement for your Dutton-Lainson but it doesn't look like anything we have will work as a direct replacement. If you'd like to stick with the Dutton-Lainson brand then I recommend checking out the Swivel Marine Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel # DL67MR which is a bolt-on installation and rated for 1,500 lbs. • Recommended Bolt On Jack w/ a Wheel for a 3 Inch x 2 Inch Trailer Coupler
We've got a couple of options for jacks with a wheel that will bolt to your 3" x 2" trailer tongue. Both have the ability to swivel up when you are towing your trailer. Which one you choose is going to depend on the terrain you store your trailer in. I have listed them below and included a couple of review videos so you can see them demonstrated: Swivel Marine Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel - Bolt On - Sidewind - 10" Travel - 1,500 lbs item # DL67MR Xtreme Off-Road Swing-Up Trailer Jack...

  • Boat Trailer Jack Recommended for a Coupler Height between 15 and 24 Inches High
Yes! For a boat jack that is similar to the # DL67MR that provides you with the smaller capacity you need, that is the Swivel Marine Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel - Bolt On - Sidewind - 10" Travel # DL84MR. The bracket height from the top of the bracket to the ground is 15-1/2" when retracted and 25-9/16" when extended. With this height range, that fits into your coupler height requirements. • Replacement Trailer Jack For a Trailstar Tracker 175 Boat Trailer
The Swivel Marine Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel # DL67MR is a great replacement for the factory jack if you plan on using the caster on smooth surfaces. If you're using the jack to push the trailer around on rougher surfaces or dirt/grass the Xtreme Off-Road Swing-Up Trailer Jack # ORJW750D would be an upgrade. This uses dual wheels with rubber tires.
