How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I was not knowledgeable in different kinds of trailer jacks, but I was looking for a weld-on trailer jack replacement for an old (2006) Trail-Rite trailer (see pics).

I had to talk to a couple of etrailer people, and after doing some of my own research on the site, I found a Fulton replacement that was a perfect to replace my old Fulton. If you have this type of jack, which seems to be not very popular anymore because it appears most people are using bolt-ones now, this should fit. Keep the nut and bushing from your old jack (bushing goes inside the recessed area of the mount). The new jack will not come with those parts.

The new jack mount does not seem to be built as heavy/sturdy as the Fulton it replaces, but I guess that's standard these days. Also, most places don't seem know these types of replacement jacks still exist, and few places will carry them in stock, so etrailer is the place to go.

Still works fine. But trailer is old and rusting saltwater environment, so Ill be getting a new trailer. As a result, I wont be using this jack anymore.

@Glen Sorry to hear that Glen, but glad the Jack did it's job!

Perfect fit for my 2010 Triton boat trailer. I had it changed in about 15 minutes. Also quick shipping by eTrailer. My go to for trailer parts.

Working great

by:

Jack fit thanks for fast response.

by:

Good jack, however the hole for the lock was smaller than the hole on the trailer mount.(Zieman) hence it was not a direct replacement and I had to drill the hole in the trailer a bit larger. The jack swings only one way now, which is fine, but as I said it is bnot the exact replacement as the website stated.

I get all of my trailer needs through ETrailer, excellent service and great prices!

Fulton Trailer Jack arrived on time and fit perfectly.

Trailer Jack is working great after 1 year!

by:

It’s exactly what I needed, a perfect fit. I would suggest ordering a replacement bushing and nut.

by:

Order came very fast and was exactly what I needed; very happy with the customer service, shipping and would buy from etrailer again!

by:

Easy to ID the exact marine jack I needed. Customer service was exceptional.

by:

Perfect replacement for my Mastercraft boat trailer.

by:

Great Jack for the price. I used it on my 19ft skeeter bass boat trailer and it’s held up well so far.

by:

Perfect fit with Eagle Boat trailer welded on mount piece

by:

Within 10 minutes of opening the product had it bolted on the only thing I had to do was switch out pull pin from old jack could’ve drilled the holes out but decided to
Switch the handles and it’s good to go also a better jack than the OEM great customer service super fast shipping

by:

Don’t recommend a part that isn’t even close to fitting. Then charge for return.

by:

Checked locally for this jack because I didn’t want the hassle of ordering online. Next time I’ll go straight to E-trailer. Totally hassle free and the first jack I looked at was the one I needed. It arrived in coastal NC in 3 days and fits like a glove. Exact same brand.

by:

Got here faster than I thought it would and bolted right on. The only thing that surprised me was that it didn't include the bracket, bolt and bushing for the trailer, so it wouldn't work on a new application as shipped.

by:

Very simple installation. It was a identical replacement for the one that was on there. My only disappointment is that it was made in China. Otherwise I would of given it 5 stars. The original Fulton was made in the U.S.A.

by:

We built great products

Nicely Manufactured with a fine smooth finish.
Love
the look strong and sturdy.
However, would not attach to my Four Winns Trailer. Have to Return for Refund

by:

It didn't fit up to my old weld model like they said. Had to have the old plate welded to the new jack. The quality is fine tho.

I am glad that you were able to use the old bracket to weld the jack to. There is a bracket that can be added to the trailer frame, part # P9012-00. It will be available on our site in the future. It is currently on an extended back order with the manufacturer.

by:

I received the proper idem and it came “early!”

by:

It's the product I was looking for

by:

I had an older trailer with an equally older Fulton bolt through swivel, weld on, side winding jack. When it needed replacing I searched on the net not believing I could find a replacement to actually fit the original welded receiver unit. I was wrong. Etrailer.com had the exact jack replacement I needed. I ordered on Monday and asked for the three day fast shipping as I required the use of the trailer by the end of the week. Etrailer shipped the product I needed a day earlier in plenty of time. This is not my first order. Etrailer is an excellent company to deal with.

Lovely

I used this to replace the Fulton jack on my EZ-Loader trailer that came with a 2006 17' Glastron bowrider. It was a seemless replacement into the existing jack mounting plate on my trailer. On a side note, customer service from etrailer.com was outstanding.

I have pretty much the same setup. Did you have to drill a larger hole for the release pin like some other people?

Steve O.

7/1/2014

It has been a while since I did this install, but I really dont recall having to drill out the hole for the release pin. I believe my previous jack already had the 12 release pin. Your mileage might vary, but this jack was pretty much identical to the jack that came with my trailer.

by:

This is our second order and it amazes us how fast the orders are processed and shipped. Keep up the great work.
