You'll Need More than Just Zinc to Fight Rust

The simple truth is that salt can be highly corrosive to metal when exposure lasts for an extended period of time. So, the more you tow around it, the more you need to protect your trailer from it.

A rusted trailer jack welded to a trailer frame

The TUFFPLATE finish on this jack helps to ensure that it doesn't end up looking like the one pictured above. TUFFPLATE offers 3 layers of corrosion protection. The first layer is a specially formulated zinc finish. The second layer is chromate. Finally, a sealer puts a third barrier between the jack's gleaming good looks and anything that can contribute to rust, like freshwater or even saltwater exposure.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. Dutton-Lainson's TUFFPLATE finish lasted nearly 500 hours in the salt spray test before the first appearance of rust (about 30% longer than a traditional powder coat finish). As for the first appearance of white corrosion, it performed about as well as typical zinc finishes.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well this jack resists rust and corrosion.

How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Swivel Sidewind Marine Trailer Jack Review

Hello, neighbors. It's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at installing the Dutton-Lainson marine trailer tongue jack. Now this is gonna be a great option for replacing an old one. Or if you are fabricating your own trailer, you can also put one of these on there. Now having a side winder jack is really nice because you're able to be on the side here and raise this jack up. Now you have a total of 10 inches of travel which is gonna be great for a boat trailer like this.

And the name of the product is gonna be the marine, and that's because it's zinc coated so it's gonna hold up even when this goes under water. It's not gonna rust out or corrode. It's gonna have a little bit of protection to that. You also have a nice castered wheel here. It's almost a hard plastic almost rubberized feel to it, and it seems really sturdy, but this allows for if you need to move the trailer around, no problem.

I can easily move this here and it feels nice and sturdy. Now when you are ready to hit the road after you hold your trailer out, you can go ahead, raise this up. It actually has a nice little handle here that's great for your fingers to be able to grab on there, and you can easily raise this up. The great thing is you really don't have to raise this all the way up. You can save yourself some cranking by simply pulling our pin, and then locking in place in this position.

In that way, you have plenty of clearance when you're out on the road. Now this is universal. So as long as your trailer fits within the size recommendations of this, you're gonna be able to bolt this on no problem, and those are gonna be three by five. So you can see we have extra stud here to go wider, and we actually have an extra hole on our bracket here. So if you have a trailer that's five inches tall, you can flip that around and you're still gonna be able to bolt this up and get it nice and sturdy on there.

And our wheel here spins 360 degrees on the caster. So that's nice for maneuverability if you have to move it around in your garage. But also you have a two inch wide contact hatch here. So that's gonna be really good. It's not, you know, pressing too hard on anything. It's gonna be nice and planted on the ground. You also have an eight inch tall tire, so that's gonna be able to roll over little pebbles or anything like that that might get in the way normally. Now you're also gonna want to measure your coupler height on your trailer and make sure that it's gonna work. Because with that 10 inches of travel, the maximum height of your coupler that you can use this with is gonna be 25 inches. So just double check yours and make sure that it falls into there. Now, Dutton-Lainson has been around for a long time since the 1800s. And the great part about this is it's made in the USA and the quality is just really solid. It's gonna be a nice, easy, quick installation on your trailer, and we're actually gonna show you how to do that. So let's take a look at that now. So here we have our boat trailer, and the trailer's great but our jack, as you can tell, is sitting at an angle that's not exactly ideal. And when you lower it down, it kinda wants to shift. So I think it's time that we replace this one. So our first step is going to be to remove the old jack. Now, before removing our old jack, we're gonna want to support our trailer. And that way, the coupler doesn't fall down when we're taking this off, and also it's just gonna make it easier. It's not gonna have stress on the hardware. So you can hook it up to your truck. I'm just gonna be using the floor jack here to kinda just raise this up and support it. So get yours nice and steady. We're also gonna wanna make sure that you chock your wheels while doing this. With our old jack removed, we can go ahead and get our new one in place and we're just gonna be putting it in the same spot. But if this is a new jack that you're putting on a trailer, just make sure that you have enough room to be able to rotate this back and out of the way so you don't wanna have this mounted up and then not be able to actually fold this back. So just make sure you have that clearance. So we get this mounted up. We'll take our bracket here and the holes correspond. So we'll get our top one on first, and pretty easy we're just gonna take our bolt, run this through, and have your bracket. You're gonna want the channel facing out so you'll have that flat side against here. And what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna hand thread my hardware on here so it kinda holds it in place. You'll have a split washer first, and then we'll just follow it up with the nut. If we cinch this up, like I said, we can get the rest of the hardware up nice and easy and not have to balance our jack. So with our two top bolts here holding this in place, we're gonna go ahead and get our bottom one in and these have multiple holes for different widths of trailer. Ours is gonna be using the bottom hole so it's maxed out, but it's also gonna give it a nice tight fit here on our frame. So with a 14 millimeter socket, we're gonna tighten this up and I'm just gonna kinda snug them doing a cross pattern crisscross here. So it evenly lines up. So putting a little bit of pressure on the bolt head here to cinch this in. Do make sure that it stays nice and level and parallel with or perpendicular with the frame. So this can move a little bit. So as you tighten, just kinda hold this in place to where everything's squared up. Now if they do the bolt starts spinning on you, just you can throw a wrench on the back end to hold that bolt head in place. Now there's no torque setting in the instruction manual as far as tightness, but I just made sure to snug it up. And those brackets will start to kinda pull in. You don't wanna over tighten 'cause it can cause it to bend a little bit, but make sure it's snug enough, and that way it's cinched against the frame. So now we can actually raise this up and get our bottle jack outta here. And just like that, we fixed the leaning of our jack that we had previous, and this just feels a lot more secure. The trailers not want to roll away and lean. And that was a look and installation of the Dutton-Lainson marine trailer tongue jack..

I launch at a low angle saltwater ramp. In some tides, my jack gets dunked. This jack has held up better than either of my prior two jacks. I have the mitre gear kit on standby if this jack ever gets sticky, but so,far haven’t needed it. I’m impressed.

by:

This one is actually to tall for my tow dolly. Even in the lowest postion it is still to high to put the dolly into the hinch ball. So i have to lift the dolly up, swivel the jack and then lower the dolly into the ball.

I do have a shorter jack, part # ORJW350D, to offer. It has a higher price tag however the retracted length is 9.50 inches verses 15.50 inches.

Well-made jack, perfect replacement for my 27 year old Atwood! I had to research carefully to find one made in the U.S. as most of these jacks are not. I have found the Dutton Lainson products to be well made. Most but not all of their jacks are U.S. made so be careful choosing if you're picky like me. And great shopping experience with etrailer. All info on the product page which is very helpful. I placed my order and got an email an hour later that it had already shipped! On top of that it arrived a day early! Nice job etrailer!

by:

Jack is much better built than the one it’s replacing! Very happy with this purchase!!!

by:

Just what I needed. It worked great!

by:

This jack replaces a Dutton jack that must be at least 30 years old and exclusively in a salt water environment. The older jack was structurally perfect but for the handle which rusted and finally snapped. Unable to replace the handle, I ordered the replacement. I expect the new one will perform handle equally well. The eight inch wheel and caster is a plus, since the 14’ Maritime Skiff must be positioned by hand at times.

etrailer is far and away the best internet business I have done business with. Great service, extremely fast shipping. Exceptional shipping information on the website. I am recommending this company to all.

by:

I used this on a 2011 ranger trail that has the center mount jack. I removed the outer tube and put my center mount tube on. Worked great

by:

Have not used it yet. Need to cut the welded Fulton bracket off my trailer
first. The trailer looks heavy duty; time will tell how durable it is.

by:

This fit properly and helps compensate for a narrow opening (top crank was important). Quick delivery also helped.

by:

its the one i needed, so i didn't have to send it back. big plus salesman and i figured it out.

by:

Perfect fit for my trailer. And etrailer kept me up to date with shipping status on the backorder. Really great customer service. Thank you!

by:

It appears to be very sturdy. Easy installation. Only time will tell how well it performs
