7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 6' Long - H20044

Average Customer Rating:  4.7 out of 5 stars   (329 Customer Reviews)

by:

Only gave 4 stars because it was a bit confusing. I have a lot of auto wiring experience; from car stereos, amplifiers and all manner of accessories. All of the info on etrailer indicated that the color coding didn't match up. So I went into it disregarding the standard color coding, when in fact it was just as it should be.

by:

Good thick rubber and plug works perfec tly.

by:

Good heavy duty. Perfect replacement.

by:

Guts truck receptacle tightly old one didn’t. Easy to indtall

by:

I just received this and am looking forward to getting it installed and my trailer wired up. This looks like a quality product.

by:

This is not the first pigtail that I have found that was wired incorrectly.

When you match all the colors up...like yellow to yellow ( left turn) in the box and brown to brown (running light)

The lights don't work correctly....colors have to be mismatched...in order for the ligh/ to preform correctly.
Yellow =left turn....Green = right turn.....Brown = running lights.....White = GND

the pigtail is a nice piece...but 2 of the wires are shaped for standard 7 pin round.in the molded end

This trailer connector does indeed use a different color code for its wires. It is specifically mentioned on the product page. The connector would wire up as follows- White wire is Ground, Red wire is Left TurnBrake lamp, Brown wire is Right TurnBrake lamp, Green is Taillights, Blue is Trailer Brakes, Black is 12-Volt power from battery and Yellow is an auxiliary circuit, frequently used for the reverse lamps.

AWESOME AS ALWAYS!!!!!

Worked great

by:

Soft and flexible cable sheathing. works well for my application to replace an old corroded plug connector

Matthew

Still works well, even sitting in the weather it works as intended. It is not used very often but still exposed to the elements.

by:

FAST & EFFICIENT AS ALWAYS

by:

I installed this plug on a trailer and it works fine.

by:

The color coded wires did not match the standard for which went where. I first assumed it matched and installed accordingly. Only ground (white) and electric break control (blue) were correct. Brown, yellow, and green were all wrong. I believe black and red were also switched, although those seem to be less standardized. Then I checked it for continuity with multimeter and reconnected, crossing colors as necessary. Also, outside sheathing immediately separated from molded plug during first use. This appears to be very nice, heavy construction, but in reality it is a big disappointment.

There are two different accepted wire color code conventions for a 7-way trailer connector, which is why we provide a chart see above showing the wire color codes applicable for this trailer connector.

by:

Good quality, fast delivery.

by:

Well built. easy to install.

by:

Products were all as described and good quality. The only problem was packaging. The insulation on the wires on one of the brake assemblies was cut requiring splicing. Not a big deal but did require additional time and effort since they were cut where going through back plate. Wish I had purchased two conductor brake wire. Would have made job easier. But that was my mistake.

No problems, everything working as it should.

by:

Seems like a good quality cord so I’m h appy.

Worked out great till a couple months ago when someone didn’t pay attention and the plug pulled out and got dragged so I will be ordering another.

by:

I felt the product was good, but the cord was not long enough. When I ordered it, the one I wanted had a longer cord, but was not available. I was in a bind so I took the shorter one. It works great, but it is not long enough for my needs. If I have to turn the trailer sharp the cord will pop out of the plug, due to the shortness of the cord. Good product.

Mike M.

2/8/2018

I sold the trailer. The cord was still not long enough.

by:

Part was promptly delivered and was the correct item.

by:

Used this product to extend the trailer's factory cable due to the new tow vehicle's receptacle was farther from the camper tongue. After one year, it is still working well.
All wire colors were correct.

Bill G.

4/13/2020

Still working well!

by:

Very nice quality product. It's nice to have a molded plug, and this fits the bill nicely. Length is adequate as well. Couple this with one of the trailer junction boxes (another excellent product) and you'll have a clean and professional installation.

Georgem

All good. Havent used the trailer much tho.

by:

Quality product at a reasonable price. Worked great- used a "weather pack" connector for a nice sealed connection to the rest of the trailer wiring. Just be sure to carefully check the wire colors (as many noted in the reviews)- they are not standard!

Aaron N.

10/2/2017

After a year, product is still like new- weather exposure hasnt caused any issues at all!

by:

I found that their Web site was fairly easy to navigate through. I was easily able to find what I needed. Placed my order and waited. Was able to easily track my products progress which was nice. Received it and open the package and found it well packed and the product looks well constructed and durable. I would order from here again.

Its working great. Had to verify each wire individually as the online schematics may have been different colors but with a few minutes a second person and a multimeter it was figures out. Wired onto trailer and have had no issues

Confirming wiring functions is alway a wonderful thing, you definitely took the right approach. Happy to hear you got your trailer wiring connection installed and you are good to go.

by:

The color coding of the wiring in relation to their position was all incorrect to what is recognized as standard. Since the plug is molded there is no way to switch positions of the wires. I had to use a continuity tester to determine what was what. The trailer brake circuit was the only one that was correct

There is more than one accepted color coding for a 7-way trailer connector, which is why we list the color code on the product description that shows which function each wire color carries. Heres a link to our Trailer Wiring help article that you might find helpful.

by:

Good service. I had called and confirmed the details about the cord and plug. The salesperson was very helpful and gave me a good target date for delivery. Got it today as was promised. I’ve got it installed and it works well. It has a quality heavy duty cord that is molded into the plug. Time will tell if my hopes for longevity is achieved.
Thanks and keep up the good service!!

Here in west Texas, it is dry and hot. The trailer sits outside and is in the elements. The cord and connector are holding up well. Works every time!! Thanks for providing a good product with service to match.

by:

Nice wire, appreciate the different wire gauges for the wire that will carry more power.

  • Recommendations For Re-Wiring Horse Trailer With Brakes
Since you said you have a 7-way blade connector on your Silverado I would start with the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, part # H20046. This is an 8 ft long harness with the 7-way trailer connector. If you need a shorter harness, you can check out part # H20044 which is a 6 ft long harness with the connector. You will want a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to make sure you match the wiring on the trailer side connector to the functions on the vehicle connector. I then recommend...

If you have had a Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885, previously installed in your 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and the wiring to install it under the dash is still present then you will be able to simply plug in the new controller with that same harness. In your van the install would have been a hard-wire type that would have used an install kit like our # ETBC7. In any case the P2 includes a pigtail wiring harness if you do need one. • Adding Brakes to One Axle on a 16 Foot Parker Trailer
The general rule when adding brakes to a tandem axle trailer is that if the trailer has torsion axles then the brakes should go on the front axle. If the trailer has straight axles with leaf springs then they go on the rear axle. The 5 on 5 bolt pattern is not all that common. I recommend double checking just to be on the safe side. I have included a link that explains measuring bolt patterns. If you do have a 5 on 5 bolt pattern then they are likely 3500 pound axles that use L68149 as...

If the trailer has just a 4-way plug, it will not power the a 12 volt light from that plug as 4-ways are only for ground, turn signals, and tail lights. What you can do instead is run the power wire to a new 7-way for the trailer side, and use that instead, such...

To replace the 7-way on your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD I recommend the Reese Multi-Plug Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # 74682 because it is an easy plug-in design. All you need to do is plug it into the 7-way socket on your truck and it will work as a replacement. For a trailer connector I recommend the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable # H20046 which is 8 feet long. If you want something shorter there is also the 6 foot # H20044 or 4 foot # H20043.

If you are referring to the 12 volt pin that is located in the 1 o'clock position on the 7-way trailer connector then there should be 12 volt power feeding from the vehicle to the trailer on that pin. This means that if you test the 12 volt wire (usually black) before it enters and exits the controller, there should be 12 volts on either side assuming the 12 volt wire on the trailer is ran to a battery for maintenance changing purposes. To add electric drum brakes to your trailers the first thing you will need are brake mounting flanges. There are different ones for different diameter axles. Given the lower capacity of the trailers I am guessing the diameter of the axles is 1-3/4 inches at most. That is the smallest brake flange there is, # 4-34, for 2K axles. Anything smaller or that isn't common will require a flange to be fabricated. A note on welding them on: generally it takes a special jig and someone with experience...
