To replace the 7-way on your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD I recommend the Reese Multi-Plug Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # 74682 because it is an easy plug-in design. All you need to do is plug it into the 7-way socket on your truck and it will work as a replacement.
For a trailer connector I recommend the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable # H20046 which is 8 feet long. If you want something shorter there is also the 6 foot # H20044 or 4 foot # H20043.
