7 pin connector separated from cable.
I
was expecting that "Molded Cable" meant that the connector was fused to the cable insulation but instead, the two separated almost immediately after I installed it. It still works fine as the wires are connected securely inside the connector but with the outer covering pulled out like this, I don't think it will last very long.

Çable good but after putting new 7way plug on truck cable wire colors did not match etrailers picture

I know that the Hopkins harness wires are as follows for function: White Wire - Ground, Red Wire - Left Turn and Brake, Brown Wire - Right Turn and Brake, Green Wire -Tail Lights, Blue Wire -Brake Power, Black Wire -12 volt hot lead, Yellow Wire -Aux.. They will not necessarily match the trailer for color; you will want to match them for function. If the colors are not as they are stated here please let me know.

I installed this Hopkins connector cable on my 2003 Jayco 12 Sd popup camper because I replaced hydraulic brakes on it with the electric brakes. Needed some extra wires. Four were not enough to operate the lights and electric brakes. Installation was quick. I had to match wires on the trailer with cable wires. Cable looks great and so far it works great. We just checked out on our first camping trip this year.

by:

Very simple and well made. It’s a lot better than wadding up the cord and stuffing it in the fifth wheel hitch.

by:

Quality plug connector, works well and I'm sure will last a long time.

Still working well, no issues, seems to be very high quality.

Easy plug in and use as advertised

The outer sheath for the pigtail has pulled away from the plug, exposing the wires inside. I fear the wiring will soon pull from the connections inside the plug. Im always careful to pull the plug out by the plug itself.

by:

Arrived in a timely fashion, easy installation and worked well.

by:

I bought a used trailer and it needed the cable replaced. The new cable is working great

by:

My wire harness was easy to install, looked great and performed great. One year later and it still looks and performs great! I definitely recommend to anyone building their own trailer or are looking to upgrade to better wiring! My homemade trailer was a great success, thanks to etrailer.com!

by:

I am replacing the trailer connection wiring harness as part of the brake system. My 5th wheel trailer is now 10 years old so this is a preventive maintenance step in the process. Hopefully with new wheel/brake parts my trailer brakes will work better.
Thanks ETrailer.com and Rebecca for great support.

Part enabled installation to be complet ed.

by:

Well built and plenty of length for wiring to my junction box.

by:

Had some real issues with this one. Should have noticed when purchasing this harness is not wired using standard truck/trailer color format. Other than that it went together fairly nice. If the connector would come apart I was thinking of fixing the wiring my self.

by:

It was just like the one that I was replacing. I cut a corner to sharp while turning and pinched the cable that came with my Keystone RV. Like for like.

by:

Pros: Best wire gauge in a 7 pin connector I could find.

Cons: reverse lights (red), left turn (yellow), right turn (green), and running light (brown) and not wired correctly in the plug for their respective wire colors.

I bought this for a sealed plug with good gauge wire to help save some time. What I got was a total headache trying to find out the problem of why it was not working correctly. This might not have been so bad had it not been on a new to me truck that I was not so trusting of the wiring in it. So I wound up looking at the truck first not thinking the plug would be wired incorrectly.

Be warned.

by:

Exactly what I ordered. Prompt delivery and notifications!

by:

Part of brake wiring assembly. I followed etrailer's wiring diagram.

by:

Thanks for your help with parts for my trailer build. My wife and I are still making custom cabinets out of curly maple. We hope to finish this winter. We have taken it out 7 times this season. Thanks again.

by:

Exactly like described - great job.

by:

These folks are Top Notch, they kept me updated on my part, and followed up after delivery. Not to forget, my trailer side wiring harness, is solid and I fully expect no issues when I install it. Thank you!!

by:

This has been a great replacement harness and was easy to install.

by:

exact replacement made the repair easy.

by:

I had to get a longer pigtail for my fifth wheel since the stock one kept pulling the plug and breaking the flap on hard left turns. This pigtail solved the issue and has worked flawlessly on my Ram 3500 since installation.

P.S. E-Trailer saved my bacon when I broke two of four leaf springs on a trip from WA state to TX last winter. I hobbled into a nice RV park in El Paso TX and proceeded to call e-trailer. The gal on the other end made sure I had the right springs and hardware to replace all four leaf springs (overnighted $$$) and did her best to get them to me as fast as possible. They did not have the exact replacements so I opted for the spring that had the extra leaf, which probably should have been the correct one to begin with. I went to the local hardware store to get a few tools I didn't have on my truck (puller, torque wrench and plastic hammer) so I could finish the job. I replaced all four leafs in the RV park and was back on the road in three days from the time they broke. The replacement springs are far better and smoother than the original ones and lifted the fifth wheel about a half inch, which made it completely level. I'm totally happy with E-trailer and would HIGHLY recommend that they be the first call when you need anything for your travel needs. She also called me back several times to make sure I was doing OK...where do you get that service these days? Jim S.

by:

Worked perfectly. I like the extra length compared to the original cable.

by:

only negative is nothing to say what wire goes to what function. basically no diagram sheet but that is easily found Info

  • How to Wire a Hopkins 7-Way Trailer Connector # H20046 1987 Layton RV Trailer
There are standard colors for trailer wiring, but not everyone will follow those guidelines and since your trailer is older it is likely that the colors are different. The best way to wire up your trailer with this 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20046 would be to test all the functions of the wiring on your trailer and then wire the # H20046 to it by function. I attached a review video for this product and an FAQ on trailer wiring for you to check out. I also attached a picture...

  • Wiring a 7-Way to a Trailer with a 6-Way that Uses Non Standard Colors
Unfortunately not all trailer manufacturers will use a standard wiring color code but we still can help you determine what to do with the wires of your trailer. First we need to identify what all of the functions of your wires are. To do this you'll need to use a jumper wire from a vehicle battery to all of the wires to watch what circuit illuminates on the trailer and then wire them to the new 7-way using the diagram I attached. The brake circuit won't illuminate anything but you should...

Your main problem is an insufficient ground for the trailer wiring. Try improving the connection of the main ground wire of the trailer wiring harness. Make sure it is attached to a clean metal surface. Or you can run all of the trailer wires back to the main ground. This is actually the ideal solution. But you can also check the current grounds for the lights to make sure they are making a solid connection to a clean metal surface. When the vehicle headlights and trailer running lights...

  • Converting 5-Way Trailer Connector to 7-Way for 12V Power
The reason you aren't finding anything is because a standard 6-way or 7-way trailer connector moves to the round style like what you have on your truck. What you need to do is swap out your 5-way flat with a 7-way trailer connector like the # H20046. You will match up your existing connections with those on the new 7-way and then connect the 12V power running from your battery. Make sure you match the functions and don't just match colors since they aren't always the same. See the chart...

  • Brake Lights On Trailer Do Not Work with Tail Lights On
I have attached the functions of the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable part # H20046 for you below however, if you are having issues with certain lights not working while others are turned on then I can almost guarantee you have a ground problem. In order to fix this I recommend you run the ground for each light up to the main ground for the trailer connector. If you have already done this then remove the ground, sand down the surface, and then reattach with new hardware....

  • Does 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector Have a Reverse Light Function
Yes, the center pin on trailer side wiring harness # H20046 is for reverse lights on the trailer. For this particular harness it is the yellow wire. But it will only work if the center pin is functional on your 2012 Toyota Tacoma. If you have the factory installed 7-Way on the Tacoma then it should be active.

Hey Landon! It sounds like you may have wired the 12V power and the trailer brake pins incorrectly for your trailer 7-Way plug. • Function of Brown Wire on 7-Way on Homemade Flatbed Trailer
Even on manufactured trailers wiring colors can vary so there is no way to say for sure. The only way to know which wire is tied to which function is to trace the wire back. On an SAE standard 7-way the brown wire would be the tail/running lights. On an RV standard it would be the right turn/brake light. Since it is a homemade trailer it could be anything. I recommend tracing the other wires back, not just the brown wire, to see what they are connected to just to make sure you wire it correctly.

I looked through our product offerings and was honestly surprised when I saw we didn't offer a cover for a trailer connector. Since the tape didn't work for you, have you considered using some of that Press'n Seal plastic wrap? You could use a piece to cover the connector, and secure the wrap with the duct tape. That way, any tape residue would remain on the wrap and not the connector itself.

The easiest way to test the functions of the taillight wiring on a trailer is to use a jumper wire. Your yellow/brown wire most likely ties into the brown running light wire.
