7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 4' Long - H20043

When I ordered this harness I thought I was getting a standard 7 way for a conventional trailer with brakes. What I actually got was a harness made for a camper/RV hook up. The wires have all the colors you would expect but all the lights/turn signals are coded into the plug completely different. After spending a good deal of time carefully matching, soldering and heat shrinking all connections to my new trailer harness, I was very dismayed to find only the brakes actually worked. After a bit of research I found a schematics page on the etrailer site and discovered the problem. As this is a molded plug I could not take it apart and just reposition the wires inside the plug. Another full hour or more of rewiring followed and now all is well. The harness itself is of very good quality but was not labeled/identified properly. This could have been prevented if etrailer would clearly label this harness as a camper/RV harness only.

by:

Ordered 1/28 - showed shipped 2/1 with estimated delivery date of 2/6. It had a USPS tracking number that would only show the label was created. Never showed the product moved. After two contacts with customer service I was told they can't track the package until a certain date. I was notified 2/17 my package would be delivered that day. Not sure what contract etrailer has with USPS but I can track a tin of cookies to Pittsburgh, PA I think they can tell me where my $[XX] package of parts is at.

by:

This is definitely a good quality molded cord for the money. Route and wire this cord into a good quality junction box and you will be on your way to having some excellent trailer wiring.

by:

love this connector. much better than the coiled connector that was put on my trailer. I found the wiring directions easy to follow and online demonstrations were very helpful. Shopping and checkout are easy. Prices are competitive. been very pleased with trainer and previous purchases!

by:

The quality of this trailer plug connector should make it last forever! The seal at the end will withstand the constant bending and twisting that this daily-use utility trailer will put to it. The blade style RV plug end will fit any factory equipped pickup receptacle so I can use multiple tow vehicles.

Still working fine after a year in my Coastal saltycorrosive weather.

by:

Trailer wiring was too short for use with a weight distributing hitch.
Cut this to length and attached a plug on the end.
Plug the trailer wire harness into this extension and other end to truck.
Saved cutting and extending original trailer wiring.

by:

Great connector and harness for the price. Very well made

by:

Well, my first impression of this item is it is very sturdy and will be a great addition to my trailer.

by:

Love the molded design, they last much longer with no maintenance.

by:

Used this on my snowmobile trailer. The cable outer jacket is to rigid (Not flexible). Gets worse in colder temps. Don't recommend it for cold use. Picture is in garage at 53F. Cable is so stiff it won't fall on the floor.

by:

34 degrees or colder the cord looses all flexibility, becomes so stiff it broke my plastic insert it plugs in to on my Tahoe.

by:

Right now 3 stars. Received the connector 12 Oct 2021. The cord on the trailer had the same connector on it which worked if you manipulated the pins to make connection (reason for replacing). The wiring colors on trailer, old connector snd new connector are the same, so adding new connector wasn’t a problem. When I plugged into the vehicle and tried the lights, nothing worked properly. The only time any lights came on was when right turn or hazard switches were activated and ALL the lights on trailer came on flashing. Tried the connection on 2 vehicles with same result. Called etrailer and they are sending another connector. Will give update then.

The harness is of great quality and well marked for installation.

by:

This umbilical has different gauge wires within it. The heaviest gauge being #10, which should correspond to the brake power supply and ground. It does not. Only one of the two #10 wires corresponds with brakes, the other one is going to a light’s blade on your vehicle’s socket. So all the effort spent on ensuring that you wired your brakes with the required #10 wires is lost when you splice this connector to your trailer. You’ll have #10 positive to your brakes yet the ground will be #12 or #14. Grounds are always the weak link in 12 volt electrics.

by:

As always, I got exactly what I ordered, on time without any glitches. Etrailer are my go to guys for all my trailer accessories. Great company to do business with.

by:

The cord worked well, the length was just right for my set up!

by:

Excellent Product from a great Company

Great

by:

Great quality, affordable and easy wiring. The extra length let me change the configuration to better suit me trailer/truck setup.

by:

It works. After I spent the time putting this in, figuring out the color code, then testing it in a socket, when I realized that the plug only uses one contact blade per wire. Which is plainly shown in the picture but I was expecting a higher quality plug like the one that I replaced so didn't notice that in the picture. In is in and works. Not worth spending the time and money to replace it until needed.

by:

Very good quality

by:

the wire colors doesn't match standard wire colors, need to determine which wire color corresponds to what position on the connector end. other than that quality and construction is good.

The Hopkins part # H20043 uses the following wire coloring: White Wire - Ground Red Wire - Left Turn and Brake Brown Wire - Right Turn and Brake Green Wire - Tail Lights Blue Wire - Brake Power Black Wire - 12 volt or hot lead Yellow Wire - Aux. I recommend wiring your trailer by function and not color. If there is a circuit you do not need for any reason it does not have to be connected.

by:

great workmanship, high quality parts

by:

Great customer service

by:

Be careful! The wire colors on this harness do not follow standard trailer colors. Make sure you follow the chart listed with the product.

  • Hooking Up New Hopkins 7-Way Connector Harness to Trailer Wiring
The Hopkins trailer wiring harnesses like the model 20244 you have feature wire colors that differ a bit from standard setups so this is likely why the new plug isn't working when splicing the wires color to color. For your 20244 plug, which is similar to our Hopkins # H20043, the wire color functions are as follows: White - Ground Red - Left Turn and Brake Brown - Right Turn and Brake Green - Running Lights Blue - Brake Power Black - 12V Power Yellow - Aux In addition to some of the...

The ground pin of a trailer side 7-way connector like the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 4' Long # H20043 you were looking at is the 5 o'clock position as shown in the included picture. For the vehicle side of the 7-way connector it would be the 7 o'clock position. I included pictures of both of the wiring positions for both sides of the 7-way connector and a video of the # H20043 for you to take a look at.

  • How To Replace 7-Way Trailer Connector On Trailer with 5 Wires
In order to install a 7-way trailer connector like the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector part # H20043 on a trailer with five wires, we need to know what those wires do. I can almost guarantee what four of them are; left stop/turn, right stop/turn, running lights, and ground. If the trailer has brakes then the last wire is for the brake output. If the trailer has an on-board battery then the wire is for the battery charge line. If the trailer has backup lights or an electric actuator...

  • Replacement Trailer 7-Way Recommendation for a 2002 Viking Legend Camper
The trailer side 7-ways we offer like the part # H20043 all have blunt cut wires that you could splice into your trailer's wiring, but we do not have any 7-ways that have any connectors like what you described. You could still wire in the part # H20043 though. I attached a chart that details how this harness would typically get wired to a trailer. You can still send me a picture though and I will take a look at it.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Battery Backfeeding Into Truck Lights
From what I can tell of your explanation, it sounds like the trailer battery is backfeeding into the truck, causing this issue. The only way I can think of that this would happen is that your 7-way like the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20043 is not pinned correctly. I'm not sure which trailer connector you purchased from us so the best I can offer is for you to ensure the 7-way is wired correctly by function instead of by matching colors. That is correct. As long as you make sure the functions match you won't have a problem. For example, a connector like the # H20043 uses a red wire for the left turn/stop which follows the RV Standard. To connect to the traditional SAE you would hook it onto the yellow wire which is also left turn/stop just like you said. Since the trailer is marked with RV standard wiring it is probably safe to assume the colors correspond with the following: Green: Tail/running lights Yellow: Reverse...

It sounds like you have a Lance truck bed camper. Lance came out with their own specialized 6-Pin which can be frustrating as it doesn't match with any standard connectors and there aren't any adapters so we typically recommend just replacing it with a standard 7-Way like the Hopkins # H20043. To test it cut off the 5-way connector that's on there and connect each wire to a 12-volt power source and see what functions.
