Video Transcript for Bargman 7-Way RV-Style Connector Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bargman 7-way RV style heavy duty connector. They're available in 3 different sizes, in 6 foot with part number 54006-057, in 8 foot, part number 54006-058, and then finally in 10 foot, part number 54006-059. This 7-way is excellent as a replacement or if you're wiring up a new trailer. It's a pre-wired, 7 blade style connector. The cable itself is flexible so it's easy to position, and the insulated jacket is ideal for cold weather. The easy to grip pads make it easy to disconnect from the vehicle end.Mike works with our customers.

Tell me Mike, what are customers wondering about a 7-way Mike: You can see here they're all different colors and they don't necessarily match up, so what the customers I work with want to know is, what does each of these wires do What Bargman did, they put this tag on all these, and a lot of companies do this, and it tells you the wire color and the function. Then, all you have to do is match it up to the right function on your trailer wiring or to the right function if you're adding new stuff. Speaker 1: Makes it way easier. Mike: It does. Another thing, with this one in particular, it's good for cold weather.

It has really good insulation in there. Another question we get is about the wire gauges on each of these wires, and the 2 larger ones are your power and ground. Blue here is for electric brakes, so these are all bigger, and then the smaller ones are for the lights. Speaker 1: Okay, cool. Well thanks for the information, Mike.

Mike: No problem. Speaker 1: Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. The jacket on our Bargman 7-way comes pre-stripped. To help us out with our installation, we're going to be using some ring terminals, part number 44-5310A.The first step is to strip back my wires. Now since I'm using a junction box, I'm going to want to stagger my wires for a cleaner look.

In my junction box, I know that my white wire is last, so I'm going to want to leave this one the longest. Every wire after that, I'm going to cut a half inch shorter, that way it gives me that clean look. You'll want to double check your junction box to find the order of your wires. To help me out, I took a picture of my junction box with my cell phone, that way I can just follow along. What I'm going to do now is strip back a 1/4 of an inch, clean out my wire, and then place it on my ring terminal. We want it to where we can see the wire just inside but not hanging out. Then I'll take my crimpers and crimp that tight. It's a good idea to check to make sure you've got it nice and crimped and we can go ahead and repeat the same process with the rest of the wires. When you're done, yours should look something like this, depending on the order of your wires. Now let's go to the trailer. Here underneath my trailer, I've gone ahead and removed the cover off my junction box. Now if you need a junction box, you can pick one up here at etrailer.com. Here you can see it's already wired up for my trailer wiring. We'll just be adding our 7-way for vehicle connectivity. Since the front of my trailer is this way, I'm going to be coming in my junction box here, so I'm going to put this over my wiring. Now with my grommet in place, as you can see here, this is where it's going to go, let's go ahead and start wiring up our junction box. We'll start off with our blue wire, which on the 7-way is our brake, put it here. After we get this one done, we'll just continue down the line. I've gone ahead and connected my blue wire to my brake, my brown wire to my right turn, my green wire to my tail lights, my red wire to my left turn, my yellow wire to my back up, my black wire to my battery, which is my power, and then finally my white is my ground. Now if you need help routing your 7-way to the front of your trailer, it can be helpful to use some metal loom clamps, and you can pick those up with part number A0500. Before we button up our installation, we're going to test it out with our tester. The best way for you to test it out at home is with your vehicle. Here's our running lights, our brake lights, our right turn, and now here's our left turn. That's going to complete our look at the Bargman 7-way RV style heavy duty connector.

The cord is awesome that it is flexible in the cold weather . Fair price for what I wanted .

by:

Junction box and cable install went well. Unfortunately, didn't arrive until late in the day and had to be done with lamp and flashlight! Bit of a challenge figuring out wiring of lights but finally figured it out. Just sold the RV to a first timer and referred him to etrailer for a ball mount, ball, and trailer brake.

  • What Is Difference Between Bargman 7-Way Connectors 54006-009 and 54006-057
The only difference between the Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Heavy Duty Insulated Cable - Trailer End # 54006-057 and the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable - HD Blue Insulated # 54006-009 is the color coding of the wire inside. The functions of the wires are the exact same so you wouldn't need to use an adapter to go from one style to the other. It would be just a matter of matching the wires by function if needed and not by color. I've attached the photos of each color...

The # 54006-057 uses the red wire for left turn signal and # 54006-009 uses the red wire for the 12V power. The color coding between these two will be different even though the function locations will be identical on the 7-way blades, so you would just need...

  • What is The Heaviest Gauge 7-Way Blade Trailer Connector Available?
The Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector # 54006-057 is going to be our heaviest gauge 7-way we carry. This uses 10 gauge wire for charge line and ground, 12 gauge wire for the brakes and 14 gauge for all the lights. We do not carry anything with a heavier gauge wire than this.

  • Wiring Bargman 7-Way RV-Style Connector
The Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector # 54006-057 has the following functions by wire color: - Black: 12V Power - White: Ground - Red: Left Turn/Stop - Blue: Brakes - Brown: Right Turn/Stop - Green: Running Light/Tail Light - Yellow: Reverse Lights You will need to match up the wires from your trailer with these functions to the corresponding wire color on the connector as opposed to matching strictly color for color. • Are There Any Trailer 7-Way Cables With 6 or 8 Gauge Wire Available

  • What is Difference Between 7-Way Kits 54006-057 and 54006-009
The difference is the color coding of the wire functions for the two 7-way kits part # 54006-057 and # 54006-009 that you referenced. The part # 54006-009 is going to have the wiring colors that are most common on trailers with 7-ways whereas the # 54006-057 uses a color coding that closer resembles a 4-way with additional functions added on beyond the 4 circuits. Functionally they are the exact same though.

  • Why Won't 7-Way Connector on Trailer Fit Factory 7-Way on My New Silverado
This is an interesting (extremely frustrating) issue we've recently discovered with a lot of the new GM trucks, specific to the Bargman 7-Ways like the part # 54006-057 you mentioned having. I can at least assure you that you're not doing anything wrong. The problem is with the molded "fins" present on the factory 7-Way for these new models, which prevents the Bargman 7-Way from properly seating into the connector. There isn't really a fix for this beyond either replacing the factory 7-Way...
