Question:

Can this be used if your boat trailer has a 5 pin wiring connector? Truck has the round 7pin.

I have a solution for you, but the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 requires 7 way connectors on both the vehicle and the trailer to be used. I recommend using the Hopkins # H20044 and a junction box like the # 3375601101, which has color coded terminals to make wiring a breeze. This Hopkins connector will be compatible with both the Curt Echo and the 7 way on your truck if you need to tow without the use of the brakes.

It also sounds like since you only have a 5 way connector on your trailer, the brakes may not be wired completely. You'll want to check the brake assemblies and trace the wiring to see if it goes to the front of the trailer. If you need additional wiring to connect the brakes to the junction box and then to the Hopkins 7 way plug you're wiring in, you can use 12 gauge wiring # 12-1-1; if your brakes are not wired at all, you'll want to use the # 12-2-1 which is a double wire for positive and negative that is jacketed for protection. You also may need some heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-10 to complete all of the wiring connections.

I've linked some installation and review videos, as well as some helpful articles on wiring a 7 way connector and adding electric drum brakes that you might find helpful in completing all of this.
