How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

An outstanding piece of quality equipment. The wheel swivels smoothly under all conditions. 10x better than the cheaper alternatives.

by:

Perfect size. Moved the trailer yesterday using the trailer jack, so much easier.

by:

Sturdy and well-made, easy to bolt on, made in the USA.

by:

awesome service, speedy delivery!!
Thank
you!

by:

Great product. Stronger and better made than the jack that came with my Mew trailer.

by:

This was the specified swivel jack for my Aluma MC10 motorcycle trailer. It was spec'd by the manufacturer, by etrailer, I ordered it, it arrived and...no way it's going to fit my trailer! The jack is much longer than the tongue/hitch. So, after everyone's recommendations I have to send it back and I'm out $18 or so in freight. You decide how many stars. The service was expedient but why is it costing me $$$ for their errors?

Fit is good on my trailer. Wish the install diagram was a little clearer

Easy to install and the trailer is easier to move not having to hold the tongue and try slide a block under it when I set the tongue down.

by:

If you want the best trailer jack, reach for this! Made right here in the USA! Customer for life.

by:

This is the same jack that came on my boat trailer and lasted for years. I bought it again for that reason.

by:

Quality construction. Bolt attachments to frame do not align with DL's spare tire carrier.

by:

It's freeezing up after using it for a year now.

This double wheel jack was the only one i could find that would replace the jack on my Ranger Bass Boat, The Ranger has a welded swivel mount and with somecareful thought it is a relacement for that jack using thr welded portion of the original.

by:

FYI: Received the jack and mounted it using the existing hardware. When I went to lock the jack  I discovered that the locking pin on the 1500 dual wheel jack is 1/2 inch and the pin from the old 1000 winch is much smaller. Now I have to disassemble and make the holes bigger to accept the pin. It would have been helpful if that was pointed out. Hoping the holes line up.

  • Replacement for Old Dutton-Lainson 800 Pound Tongue Jack
I spoke with my contact over at Dutton-Lainson and found out that they stopped making that jack in 1994 and the specific handle for it they ran out of at least 10 years ago. But the good news is that your jack was replaced by a different jack that is still available today. It is the 6400 model # DL22457. Replacing the jack is pretty much the only option at this point. I have included a link below to a video on this jack for you.

  • Replacement Jack with Large Diameter Wheel
When choosing a trailer jack, you will want to choose a jack whose capacity meets or exceeds the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer. All of the Dutton-Lainson trailer jacks use the same 6 inch wheel, so if the size of the wheel on the jack you currently have is unsatisfactory, you might want to look in a different direction, to a different manufacturer. Fulton makes a few jacks that feature a higher capacity and a larger-diameter wheel. The Bolt-Through Swivel...
