How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

1,000 lb Sidewind A-frame Jack

by:

The Jack was easy to install and etrailer was the only place I could find the right one to fit my very old (1999) tent trailer.

by:

Most 1000 lb jacks are too wide for older camper trailers like mine. This was the only option i could find with a diameter of 2 inches! Took some elbow greasr, but once it went in the rest was easy and the included hardware worked very well. I would recommend adding 3-6 washers as they're not included and make a difference. It cranks clean and smooth! Great product so far. Customer service was very active and helpful in making sure I got what I needed and there were no issues. Odelia was very helpful! Thank you etrailer!

by:

Once I modified my camper tongue, the jack fit and operated flawlessly.

Works great.

by:

The trailer jack was easy to install and works great. The removable foot is very convenient.

by:

Unfortunately my initial search for a replacement for the Atwood Model 80274 suggested the Pro Series 2000 LB jack. But trying to install that jack I found it was too big. However talking directly to customer service they were able to direct me to thing model jack which was a direct replacement that I needed. They took back the wrong jack with no problems.

by:

This was a good replacement for the original on our vintage camper. Pretty simple - just used a grinder to remove the welded on old one, and bolts to attach the new.

by:

Nice fit great product

by:

Once again, etrailer impresses me. Ordered my jack stand on Friday and it arrived on Saturday. What great service!

I love the products and the value. The lights and jack are hard at work on my boat trailer. Thanks for the follow up.

by:

*Although I have not installed the trailer jack yet it looks like a direct replacement for the original one on my boat trailer. The wheel that goes with the jack definitely looks like a better fit than original.
*The electrical 4 conductor plug set... I'm using for a quick disconnect for a third
( center ) brake light for tailgaters

by:

This trailer Jack has all the capacity and lift height I need. It cranks easy, has a nice finish and in my opinion, of good quality.

by:

Excellent product the quality was better than the original jack on the camper from the manufacturer

by:

PURCHASED NEW COUPLER, JACK, AND FOOT.
ALL

THE JACK AND FOOT PA WORK VERY WELL.

by:

Looks like a good jack that will fit the smaller outer tube dimension for a vintage trailer.

by:

Great product wish they had the option of coming without the triangle mounting. I will have to remove this but so happy to find this size for my vintage trailer!

by:

Nice trailer jack. Fit perfect in place of my broken one.

by:

Perfect replacement. took about as long to install as it did to open the box. Great product.

by:

  • Recommended Replacement Jack for AL-Ko MD285 Trailer Jack
I may have a solution for you, but we don't have anything that matches your AL-Ko MD285 jack. You could likely make the Dutton Lainson # DL22530 jack you were looking at work, and you'd just need to add the caster # DL22414. This Dutton Lainson jack is designed for trailers with tongue weights of up to 1000-lbs, so it would be able to handle your 1700-lbs trailer easily and provides 15" of lift. The other option that might work is the Bulldog Heavy-Duty, Rack-and-Gear Jack with Steel...

  • Replacement A-Frame Sidewind Jack with 2 Inch Diameter Outer Tube
We have one sidewind A-frame jack with a 2 inch outer diameter tube, part # DL22530. This is a 1,000 pound jack from Dutton-Lainson that has 15 inches of travel. I've linked a video of the jack for you as well.

  • Mounting Bracket for DL22530 A-Frame Trailer Jack
The jack already has a mounting bracket welded to it, as shown in the provided photo. If your trailer does't have a mounting plate, the easiest way to provide a plate would be to replace your coupler with something like # PSE338050303 for a 2 inch coupler, which has an integrated mounting plate for the trailer jack.

  • Replacement A-Frame Jack With 2 Inch Outer Tube
For your 1999 Jayco Glacier Heritage trailer, I recommend the A-Frame Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22530. This is the only jack we have that has that 2 inch outer diameter upper tube. For a foot you'd want the part # DL22541 and then for a wheel part # DL22414. If you need a topwind model like you stated wanting, you will need to enlarge the hole in your coupler to accept the standard 2-1/4 inch outer tube. You can use a hole saw, a rotary grinding tool,...

  • Recommended Replacement A-Frame Tongue Jack for 4500 lb Utility Trailer
Sorry to hear about your jack. I'd be happy to make a recommendation. Since a trailer's tongue weight is generally 10-15 percent of its total weight, you'll be in the 450-675 lb tongue weight range. We have jacks with tongue weight capacities starting at 750 lbs, but I always recommend going with a heavier capacity than you need. The jack (and you) won't need to work so hard to raise the trailer, and it will therefore last longer. The Bulldog # 2000 lb capacity A-Frame Jack, part # BD155033...

  • Functionality of Dutton-Lainson Removable Wheel Part DL22414
The Dutton-Lainson removable wheel for A-frame jack # DL22414 does swivel. It is compatible with Dutton-Lainson model 6418 trailer jack # DL22530. The wheel does not have bearings between the hub and sleeve. It will have a quick-attach pin for easy installation and removal. The wheel will make it easy to maneuver the trailer into the hitching position. It's recommended that the wheel is removed before travel. I have included FAQ and a couple video reviews for you as well.

I do have an option for you but the Ultimate Trailer Jack part # 322-RDJ-2K only comes with an outer diameter of 2-1/4". The 2" outer diameter tube jacks are harder to find. We do have the A-Frame Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson part # DL22530 with the foot plate part # BD018564 that has a 2" outer tube. However it only has a 1,000 lb capacity. The jack mounts used on a-frame trailers usually follow an industry standard pattern which is a 2-1/4" hole opening and three mounting holes spaced 3" apart. • Does Capacity of Trailer Jack Relate to Total Weight or Tongue Weight of Trailer
The lifting capacity of a trailer jack like the part # PSEJ10000101 that you referenced is relative to the trailer's tongue weight. So the part # PSEJ10000101 has a 1,000 lb tongue weight capacity which would work well for your current trailer as it most likely has a fraction of that as tongue weight. Since your trailer has an A-frame jack on it currently the part # DL22530 might be the better choice for a replacement as that is what this style of jack is.

The rule of thumb for estimating a tongue weight is 10-15 percent of trailer weight. A 4,600 pound trailer would have a tongue weight between 460 and 690 pounds. Somewhere between a 1,000 to 2,000 pound capacity jack would be fine. Having a jack that is rated for more than the tongue weight is not a problem. The jack you were looking at Pro Series A-Frame Topwind Jack, part # PSEA20000103, would work fine. You could also use Dutton-Lainson jack, part # DL22530 or Bulldog Heavy Duty Jack...
