You'll Need More than Just Zinc to Fight Rust

The simple truth is that salt can be highly corrosive to metal when exposure lasts for an extended period of time. So, the more you tow around it, the more you need to protect your trailer from it.

A rusted trailer jack welded to a trailer frame

The TUFFPLATE finish on this jack helps to ensure that it doesn't end up looking like the one pictured above. TUFFPLATE offers 3 layers of corrosion protection. The first layer is a specially formulated zinc finish. The second layer is chromate. Finally, a sealer puts a third barrier between the jack's gleaming good looks and anything that can contribute to rust, like freshwater or even saltwater exposure.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. Dutton-Lainson's TUFFPLATE finish lasted nearly 500 hours in the salt spray test before the first appearance of rust (about 30% longer than a traditional powder coat finish). As for the first appearance of white corrosion, it performed about as well as typical zinc finishes.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well this jack resists rust and corrosion.

How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

This is great! After 9 months of searching for a replacement jack (and 3 jack circumference sizes that did not work)for our 2004 Viking Epic popup camper, this one fits! Its perfect! Thank you! Very happy!

by:

I would only say that the retracted "up" position of the jack does NOT have enough ground clearance , absent the wheel, to guarantee there is NO contact with concrete when entering/exiting a sloped concrete driveway.

by:

Does whats its supposed to.

by:

The trailer jack for Our old (1996) tent trailer was received in a timely manner in good condition. It was easy to install and appears to work well. Very easy to operate and good instructions were included.

by:

This jack is the perfect fit for our trailer with a 2" hole. etrailer.com had all the details listed (not like other sites) so that I could purchase with confidence. Strong jack with lock on (pin) wheel. etrailer.com is my new go to site for trailer needs.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. A jack that has a 2-inch outer diameter.

The Jack was easy to install and etrailer was the only place I could find the right one to fit my very old (1999) tent trailer.

by:

Once I modified my camper tongue, the jack fit and operated flawlessly.

by:

Most 1000 lb jacks are too wide for older camper trailers like mine. This was the only option i could find with a diameter of 2 inches! Took some elbow greasr, but once it went in the rest was easy and the included hardware worked very well. I would recommend adding 3-6 washers as they're not included and make a difference. It cranks clean and smooth! Great product so far. Customer service was very active and helpful in making sure I got what I needed and there were no issues. Odelia was very helpful! Thank you etrailer!

by:

Exactly what I needed super easy to ins tall.

by:

The trailer jack was easy to install and works great. The removable foot is very convenient.

by:

This was a good replacement for the original on our vintage camper. Pretty simple - just used a grinder to remove the welded on old one, and bolts to attach the new.

by:

Unfortunately my initial search for a replacement for the Atwood Model 80274 suggested the Pro Series 2000 LB jack. But trying to install that jack I found it was too big. However talking directly to customer service they were able to direct me to thing model jack which was a direct replacement that I needed. They took back the wrong jack with no problems.

by:

Nice fit great product

by:

Once again, etrailer impresses me. Ordered my jack stand on Friday and it arrived on Saturday. What great service!

by:

Quality product that fit perfectly! I am a frequent customer of etrailer and am always satisfied.

by:

*Although I have not installed the trailer jack yet it looks like a direct replacement for the original one on my boat trailer. The wheel that goes with the jack definitely looks like a better fit than original.
*The electrical 4 conductor plug set... I'm using for a quick disconnect for a third
( center ) brake light for tailgaters

by:

Great company to deal with.

by:

This trailer Jack has all the capacity and lift height I need. It cranks easy, has a nice finish and in my opinion, of good quality.

by:

this is great but the wheel that i purchased with it doesnt work with it. The wheel sleeve is too small to fit this jack.

by:

Had it on the trailer about a year now, I keep going around and around with it, results are kind of up and down.

It works just fine, bolted right up as it should, does its job. No complaints. Works better than the one it replaced.

  • Replacement Option For Pop-Up Camper
There isn't a replacement wheel we can offer for an AL-KO jack; the best we can do is a new jack, and I assume that is an A-frame jack. For one with a wheel use A-Frame Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel # DL74MR, which is a 1,000 lb capacity jack. If that's not right I have added a link to our entire selection of jacks for you.

  • 2 inch Outer Diameter A-Frame Trailer Jack Recommendation
I have good news, our trailer jack that has a 2 inch outer diameter part # DL74MR would fit and work well. While it has a 1,000 lb weight capacity that does not mean 1,000 lb total trailer weight capacity. That capacity is the tongue weight capacity which is normally 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight. So your trailer would be looking at around 150 lbs of tongue weight which would be no problem for this at all.

  • Weight Distribution for Trailer With Side Mounted Trailer Jack
It may be possible to use a WDH like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET with your trailer, but it will depend on the location of that jockey wheel. The brackets for this system mount 27-32" back from the center of the coupler with the overall length of the spring bars being 36". If your jack is clear or can be moved so it is out of the way then you could use this system or others like it. The other possibility is to mount that jack on the inside of the frame if it...

  • Solution for Needing Trailer Jack with Outer Tube Diameter of 1-7/8 inch
I have a solution for you, however we do not have a trailer jack available that features an outer tube diameter of 1-7/8 inches. They just aren't around anymore. The best recommendation I have is to simply install a new bottom support plate like the Bulldog Jack Support Plate # BD003135. The new plate can be either welded or bolted onto the trailer and features a 2-1/3 inch diameter hole for jack tubes, making it much more universal in terms of finding a compatible trailer jack. Then...

  • Solution for Adding Wheel to Jack on 2002 Rockwood Freedom 1980
I do have a solution, but all of our wheels fit a 2" diameter tube. With a 1.7" measurement you won't find anything that fits your current jack. The only way to add a wheel will be to get a new jack like the A-Frame Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel # DL74MR. As far as I can tell, you have an A-frame jack right now so this will work as a replacement. It has 15" of travel and a 1,000 lb weight capacity which should be plenty for your camper.
