Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Ordering easy, prices are good, just a unfortunate that you didn't have my first choice load range D tires in stock. But glad you let me know promptly!

so far the load range C tires are working out. I would recommend to everyone to get the highest load range tire for your application. I wanted LR D but they were not available when I ordered. But these tires have worked fine. I have ordered several tireswheels from etrailer always with great results! Highly recommend etrailer!!

by:

Etrailor has outdone all my expectations. To start they had the best price out there for my tire. I was able to buy 3 for the price of 2. So i got a new spare. The communication with emails keeping me updated on the progress of my order were awesome. It arrived very quick and was boxed up well. I cant say enough good things about this company.

Theyve been great, no issues!

Very nice set of tires. Have not put a lot of miles on them yet but the slightly over-loaded trailer handled very well with a big scoop of gravel while driving a respectable 60 mph on the Interstate.

Working great! Put about 500 miles on them since purchase and all goo

by:

Fit perfect and the tires have held up great on our utility trailer. Would definitely recommend these tires and Etrailer as a supplier.

by:

Excellent tires and rims for a small boat trailer, the ones I replaced were old rusty rims and dry rotted tires . Great product and price I checked all over the internet and locally and could not bet the price. The lady took my order was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I got confirmation of my order fast and next day I got shipping and tracking info. etrailer also sent a follow up email to see if every thing was what I had expected and was satisfied .

by:

I bought two of these on Monday, delivered wednesday as promised. Wheels and tires are exactly as described especially with the 2.5" pilot hub which is what I really wanted. Installed as soon as I received them on my boat trailer. Fit perfect and love the load range C along with a five year warranty. Alex was great on the phone!

by:

Fast free shipping, wheels and tires fit perfectly. Great communication and package tracking. The cost for wheels and tires already mounted at etrailer was cheaper than just the tires if I bought them locally. Very satisfied.

Replacement trailer tires and rims arrived exactly as ordered. Very satisfied with etrailer and recommend them others seeking similar products. Price, service and delivery were excellent.

by:

I ordered 2 new tires with rims for my trailer and was pleasantly surprised when the order arrived 4 days ahead of schedule. The tires were packaged in a strong box and everything went perfectly for the installation. The communication from e-trailer was top notch and I would highly reccomend them to anyone.

Thanks etrailer.com

  • Is Pilot Hole Diameter of AM30120 Wheel/Tire Combination Important
The answer to your question will depend on how the wheel mounts to the hub. If the wheel attaches using lug nuts, the setup is considered lug-centric and the pilot diameter isn't important (as long as the grease cap for the hub can pass through it). The wheel supports the load via the wheel studs not only hold the wheel to the hub, but also support the trailer weight. If the wheel attaches using lug bolts, it's a hub-centric setup and most of the support for the trailer is provided by...

  • Will Trailer Wheel with 2-1/2 Inch Pilot Hole Fit in Place of a Wheel with 2-3/4 Inch Pilot Hole
If the center part of the hubs on your trailer are 2-1/2 inches or smaller then tire and wheel combo # AM30120 will fit. A pilot hole can be larger than the hub center diameter if the wheel is held on to the hub with lug nuts. But if it attaches using wheel bolts instead of lug nuts then the pilot hole has to be exact because that is how it centers on the hub. At a 2-1/2 inch hub diameter and wheel pilot hole you would be good to go either way.

  • Replacement Tires and Wheels for 1994 Coleman Roanoke Pop-Up Camper
I have some good news, because surprisingly, I was actually able to find the tire size your 1994 Coleman Roanoke uses (that info is normally not accessible)! According to my research a 1994 Coleman Roanoke came with 5.70-8 trailer tires so all you need to know is your hub's bolt pattern. I have added a link to a help article on how to determine your bolt hole pattern as well as a printable template you can use. • What Is The Correct PSI For A 5.70-8 Load Range C Tire?
The 910 lb rating indicates that this is a load range C tire. The maximum PSI for a tire like this is 75 PSI. For Example the Kenda 5.70-8 # AM30120 have a ply rating of 6 and a 910 lb max load at 75 PSI. Also, each tire should have the PSI specified on the sidewall of the tire itself. It would likely not be listed anywhere in the specs for the trailer. In order to extend the life of your tires, will want to always inflate them to their maximum psi and stay under their listed load capacity.

  • Choosing The Right Replacement Boat Trailer Axle
One thing to note, when picking the right trailer axle there can be a bit larger of a measurement when taking the Hub Face to Hub Face measurement, but the spring center to spring center measurement needs to be spot on. That being said, you could use this axle # 20440I-ST-60 or this axle # 20440I-EZ-60 which are both 60 inches long. So depending on what the offset of your wheels are, you may have them sticking out a bit farther than usual. The distance between the spring centers however,...

Thanks for the kind words and we love that you love what we do! The issue is that you have wheels with a 13 inch diameter and if you wanted to use tire wider than your current 185/80-13 you will also need to get new wheels. If you have enough room in your trailer's wheel well you would be able to do this, though you do need to know your bolt pattern. • Recommended Clearance Between Trailer Frame Rail and Trailer Tire
The minimum distance between the inside of a tire and the frame rail depends a lot on the setup of the trailer. But as long as the tire and the frame don't touch you would be fine. It's hard to give an exact figure as trailer setups can vary and some trailers may have more side to side movement which would call for more clearance. If the suspension is good on the trailer and not worn out I would go with at least 1-1/2 inches to be on the safe side.

You will want to continue using the acorn style lug nuts with these wheels to help keep them snug since your 56mm hub bore is going to be slightly smaller than the 63.5mm (2.5") opening on the # AM30120. I've actually chosen to ignore the recommendation when I was younger and lost lug nuts on my car as the lugs had worked loose.
