Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Deciding Between Trailer Tire and Larger Passenger Tire for New Camper
I definitely recommend going with the 13 inch radial ply tire, assuming it is a special trailer tire. I am not sure why the manufacturer would offer or consider putting vehicle/passenger tires on the trailer, but this is not something we ever recommend. Special trailer tires (which will have "ST" in front of the tire size) feature a stiffer sidewall that is designed specifically to better support the weight of a loaded camper/trailer. Even if the passenger car tire is larger the smaller...

  • Can Different Tires or Hubs be Installed on a Trailer with Fixed Hub Integral Tire and Rim
Your set up may be fine on the highway. Make sure that the bearings are well greased and check the tires for any indication of a speed rating. Also check the trailer tongue or frame for any speed limitations. You might be able to switch tires and wheels or replace the hubs but if they are what I think they are then you would not be able to replace them and you would have to instead replace the axle and then get new hubs, wheels, and tires. If the hubs can be removed then I would need...

  • 4.80/4.00-R8 Tires and Wheels
For tires and wheels sized 4.80/4.00-R8, if you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern you can use the Kenda # AM30000 bias trailer tire with wheel. It is speed rated for 65 mph and has a "B" load range. If you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can use the Kenda # AM30020 which is also a bias trailer tire with a 65 mpg speed rating and "B" load range. However, none of our tires in this size have a 1" bore (pilot) hole. You might not see a bore hole that small unless you were taking about a wheelbarrow...

  • Troubleshooting Inner Trailer Tire Wear
Excessive inner wear on both tires typically means that the trailer is being overloaded. When your trailer is overloaded for an extended amount of time the axle could be bent which means that it is not holding your load appropriately resulting in the excessive wear on the inside of your tires. Another possibility is that the axle is flipped. Generally, an axle is flipped to gain more height, however, the natural bow that is in the trailer that helps support the load will be facing the...

  • What Air Pressure Should My Trailer Tires Be Run At
You'll always want to follow the recommended PSI that is stated on the tire itself. The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30020 you were looking at are designed to be run at 60 psi when cold. Tires on trailers can be changed, so the recommended psi could change depending on which tires you're using, so you'll always want to follow the specs printed on the sidewall of your tires.

  • Can Trailer Tires Be Aired Down for Better Traction on Icy Pavement
We recommend running the vast majority of trailer tires at the pressure rating listed on the tire sidewall, and for very good reason. You can lower the tire pressure to increase the tire's contact surface with the pavement if you wish, however by doing so you are reducing the tire's capacity by an unknown degree. The tire's listed capacity is at the pressure rating listed on the tire's sidewall, if that pressure is lowered you won't know what the tire's capacity actually is which could...

  • Should Trailer Axle be Changed from a Normal Axle to a Torsion Axle on Home Made Tear Drop Trailer
You can go to a torsion axle and different tires and wheels if you so choose. You have to consider what you are trying to accomplish by doing so to determine if it is worth the expense or not. Normally I would say you could change to a different tire size if there is clearance to do so but Harbor Freight trailers tend to have odd bearings and if changing the hubs is required to go to a larger size tire and wheel you may not be able to without changing the axle any way. If you do change...

  • What Determines the Speed Rating of a Trailer
Yes, typically the tires are what dictate the speed rating. For example, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30020 has a speed rating of 65 mph so in theory this would raise the speed rating of your trailer. I recommend checking with the trailer manufacturer to ensure that there are no other components on your trailer that would be a limiting factor when it comes to the speed rating. Attached is a link to our selection of tires for you to filter through as well as some FAQs about...

  • Do Bearings Impact Max Speed Rating of Trailer Tires
Bearings play no role in the maximum speed of trailer tires. The speed is based on the rating given to the tire from the manufacturer. If you don't have speed listed like on the # AM30020 then you can assume it is rated for the standard speed of 65 mph. If it is higher than 65 a trailer tire will have a rating with a letter like M which would be 81 mph.

Your current 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30020 is 16.1" tall and 4.6" wide. The larger tires are going to be 21.3" tall and 5.7" wide. I cannot safely recommend you do 70 mph with this option for your trailer. For the 5 on 5 bolt pattern we have the replacement tire and wheel with the part # AM30070. But even though the description says that these work great at the highway speeds, my research shows that the limit is 65 mph.

  • Will a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Last Longer on a 4x8 Trailer Harbor Freight Trailer
The first problem is that you are running lower air pressure than what the tire is rated for. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum air pressure as indicated on the tire. The reason is that trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires. Because of the thicker sidewall, if the tires are under-inflated there will be more heat build up and than can cause the tires to fail and as you are seeing wear out quickly. If your trailer weight...

You are absolutely correct. This tire size will only fit 8x3.75 inch wheel/rims which isn't an issue because that is the same size wheel/rim the 5.70-8 tires like # AM10012 fit.
