Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Ordering was very easy. Package arrived quickly and the wheels fit perfectly. Exactly what I needed to replace the old tires and wheels on my small boat trailer!

by:

etrailer.com is awesome! I ordered my boat trailer tires on Sat. Oct. 1. They were shipped Sun Oct. 2. Tires were delivered in Hawaii Thu. Oct. 6, four days before the estimated delivery date!!!

I also had a few questions about the tires and used the "live chat" service that they offer and within minutes I got a response. Thank you very much etrailer.com team for the great experience! Will definitely use your services again and recommend you!

by:

Great tires and wheel combo. I used these on a recently rebuit trailer and have put quite a few highway miles on them with no issues. Given the overall price and performance its hard to justify not buying the wheel and tire combo vs. tire only and having to dismount the old tire and then resue the old rim and valve stem. I keep to old wheel/tires as spares

by:

Everything worked out amazing. Little nervous about ordering cause I wasn't sure if I was ordering the right trailer tires I knew what my tire said and what I thought was the right trailer tire and rim. Their video on how to measure your trailer tire was awesome just to give me some good peace of mind. I went with three day shipping because I ordered my tires and rims on a Friday when I was leaving for the river on a Thursday and they got the order processed and shipped out. I went with three day shipping because I ordered my tires and rims on a Friday when I was leaving for the river on a Thursday and they got the order processed and shipped out. I got them on Wednesday it was amazing.

Exceeded my already high expectations. I live in rural Hawaii and my complete boat trailer axle down to tires was delivered within a week of order with reasonable shipping charges.. Local place gave me runaround 3x already. This saved me. Now I can go fishing again!

Dimensions and sizing can be difficult, even if you are used to these things but trailer makes it super ez.. With videos and detailed things. Thank you, I will definitely do business again!!!

by:

Purchased three to replace boat trailer tires. They fit first try. Retina searing galvanized coating is thick and should hold up longer than the tires. Tires arrived with 70# psi air pressure and required minor topping up to spec's. No blemishes or bulges, thick grabby tread. See you on the boat ramp!

Great price fast delivery, staff extremely knowledgable

A quality product. I ordered two wheels/tires and both were packaged very well together in one box. Items were delivered more quickly than I expected. Will use etrailer again!

GREAT PRICE AND VERY FAST DELIVER.

by:

The mount and the tire are high quality and a good match for my 2018 Malone MPG525 trailer.

by:

I truly appreciate the fantastic customer service. Look what arrived at 10:30am. I'm indeed grateful.

by:

staff helpful in selection process. Good price, quick ship.

by:

I bought 3 (actually 4, read on) of these. One tire came off after the first few miles. I had checked psi at 87 directly before the maiden trip. These tires when filled to the max 90 psi seem to like to settle at 87psi. The tire came off shredded to pieces, I called customer service etrailer and they cited my "low psi" as the cause.
Etrailer stated it was impossible for there to be a defect, and begrudging said they would refund if I paid return shipping. I bought another tire, due to my need for a spare. I still have the other tire in the trailer box sitting in my garage. I don't care for etrailer's return policy and will likely discard of the tire when I clean the garage.
Etrailer sent me an email asking how the tire was doing after a year past purchase. I have to admit that made me laugh. I have spent thousands of dollars at etrailer, I haven't spent a dime since and never will again.

by:

Received the product extremely fast. Ordered/shipped on the same day and received two days later. Perfect fit on my boat trailer. After installation I topped off the air pressure and I'm ready to go. The lady's at etrailer are really nice

Tires are wearing well. I keep up proper tire inflation which is important with small wheels and tires. Very pleased with my purchase.

by:

Perfect fit and quick shipping!

by:

Great product at a good price. Shipped well.

by:

Exactly what was needed. Still performing as needed after a year.

by:

No problem with these wheels. Good service provided by E-Tailer.

by:

This trailer tire exceeded my expectations! This is a 6ply (rated to 925 lbs.) High speed trailer tire mounted on a heavily galvanized rim that is as good or better than the original wheels on my magic tilt boat trailer. I also purchased the Fulton High Rise tire carrier and wheel stud lock. This was an excellent addition to my trailer and highly recommend etrailer for fast service, excellent quality, and a great price. You will not find a better deal at any big box store.

by:

etrailer provided excellent product support and prompt shipping. The LED trailer light I ordered was installed when received and has worked flawlessly since purchased over a year ago. I highly recommend etrailer.com based on my experience.

Thanks,
Rick

Great product I purchased 3 tires and wheels for my boat trailer about a year ago. They handled good on the highway .And still look as new. Kendra AM30070

by:

Perfect product and delivery. Thank you so much!!

by:

Excellent price, combined with free shipping makes this the best deal I found by far. I recently bought a 3 year old boat and trailer with 4 ply tires (already showing some dry-rot) that were barely rated above total combined boat + trailer weight. I was just going to buy new 6 ply tires, but e-Trailer had the same tire mounted galvanized rims for just $4 more than the tire alone. I haven't been able to put any real millage on them yet, but so far I have to give these 5 stars.

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel with Smaller Diameter than 5.70-8
We have tires that are 2 inches shorter in diameter than your current size of 5.70-8 with the size 4.80-8 like part # AM30070 which has matching bolt pattern as yours as well. But it's actually thinner than what you currently have.

We have the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 Galvanized Wheel-5 on 41/2 - Load Range C # AM30070 that it sounds like you are looking for. This is not a directional tire which means you can install it on either side of the trailer.

  • Can Larger Tires Be Used For Highway Driving and Smaller For Local on Boat Trailer w/ 4.80-12 Tires?
As long as you have enough clearance for the larger Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30850 in your fenders and enough ground clearance with the smaller Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM30070 you should have no issues. Here are the dimensions for the different tires so you can ensure you will have enough clearance. Typically we like to see at least 3" of vertical clearance for fenders and 1" of sidewall clearance to suspension...

  • Recommended Trailer Tire with Higher Speed Rating for Size 4.80-8
All of our tires in the 4.8-8.0 size only have a 65 mph speed rating, like the part # AM30020 with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I cannot safely recommend you do 70 mph with this option for your trailer. For the 5 on 5 bolt pattern we have the replacement tire and wheel with the part # AM30070. But even though the description says that these work great at the highway speeds, my research shows that the limit is 65 mph.

  • Availability of a 5 Lug Wheel For 4.8-8" Tire On a 1972 Sea King Montgomery Ward Boat Trailer
The White # AM20006 and Galvanized # AM20008 are the closest size we have to the wheels on your 1972 Sea King Montgomery Ward boat trailer. These wheels are 8" x 3-3/4", with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. Their pilot hole is only 2.8" in diameter which you will need to ensure fits over your current hub. Since the wheels are lug centric and not hub centric they do not have to fit perfectly on the hub and often have a larger pilot hole than the hub to fit different hub manufactures as there...

  • Replacing Tires for Boat Trailer With Low Ground Clearance
My best recommendation as a replacement tire is Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM30070. I cannot recommend going up a full tire size since the ideal fender clearance is about 3 to 4 inches and the next size will add at least 4 inches to your current diameter. Also, please check if the bolt pattern matches. I linked our article on bolt pattern measurements below. If you're worried about clearance, have you thought about lifting it? We offer kit...

The # AM30070 is a load range C tire, while the tires on the Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer # MAL53FR (MPG585) are load range B. So, they are not the same load rating. Each wheel will have a maximum load capacity of 745 lbs at 90 psi. This tire will have a diameter of 16.1 inches and a width of 4.7 inches. Realistically you need to pick the tire that has the needed capacity for your trailer. To be safe a Load Range C like part # AM30070 would work best and it wouldn't cause any bounciness. I say it would work best because the capacity would for sure be enough and it has the needed bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inch.
