Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I would not recommend these tires to anybody! I bought four of them for my boat trailer, mounted on galvanized spoke rims, and in less than 5000 miles of use, two of the four failed. They were balanced, maintained at 65# pressure, never driven over 63 MPH, and considerably oversized for the load being carried. Both tires suffered internal cord separation and went out of round, with "wiggley" tread. Fortunately I discovered both problems before blowouts. The one tire ordered here was a replacement for the first failure, and before I figured out the tire design is faulty. No longer trusting these tires, I got rid of all of them after 5K miles, and replaced them with Goodyear Endurance trailer tires, made in the USA! So far, under same use, no problems at all.

Disclaimer - I have no tire company affiliation whatsoever.

Ordering was simple with solid choices. Shipment was quick with excellent tracking details. Packaging was very good. Very pleased with the level of service.

by:

So far so good. Just finished restoration and still waiting to put these tires down on the open road. Gotta say, they look good.

by:

Looks good, well made. Just received them. Will see when mounted to my camper!!!

by:

I haven't mounted them yet, but they look like a quality tire. FAST service !

HAVE LIKED ALL MY TRANSACTION'S WITH E-TRAILER. NO PROBLEM'S AND HANDLED IN A TIMELY MANNER.

by:

This is the second set of this brand tire I have purchased for our enclosed trailer, The original set was great and never had the first problem out of them, Only replaced them as they were 10 years old and feel better with a new set as we travel long distances pulling classic cars. E Trailer had them in stock and Jessica was very knowledgeable and the order arrived in a few days.

by:

Ms paula thank u so much 4 all ur help with my new trailer tires it allways good to b able to talk to i live person 4 help when u need it .

by:

Good looking tire. And Kenda is a name you can trust. Especially if you are needing a good quality tire for an affordable price.

by:

Great quality tire at a good price and it arrived quickly.

by:

We bought tires for our 2005 camper. Purchasing was easy and delivery was fast. Thank you for a great purchase.

by:

Great price for a great tire. I bought these to put on my equipment trailer that was in need of some new tires. These were the wright choice in tires for me. They have held up very well without any issues. Would highly recommend these tires if you need a great heavy duty tire.

They are still doing great. Use the trailer there on quite often to haul lumber, tractor and vehicles on it. Do love them and they are holding up well.

by:

Shipping was very good with each tire in separate box. I have not installed these yet. The tires look to be very high quality as I have used this brand and size on two trailers. over the past 10 years, a six wheel Avion Travel Trailer and a four wheel Featherlite 25 ft enclosed car hauler.

On my last order about a year ago, I ordered four with the white spoke wheel. Two balanced OK but two different shops could only balance with an excess number of weights. I have the original Featherlite wheels in storage. I am going to install these tires on the original wheels to see if the problem is in the wheels or tires. These tires look very rugged and high quality, so I suspect the problem was the center hole in the wheels causing imbalance from the balance machine.

The four tires and white spoke wheels I bought in 2012 balanced excellently with very small weights. Those 2012 tires will go on the Avion travel trailer set up permanently at a campground. They still look very good with no weather checking, and will replace really old tires that are on the Avion.

I am installing the new tires on the Featherlite enclosed 25 ft for highway safety, but I want them to balance well. I plan to carry a lot of sensitive electronics and tools and I want the trailer to ride smoothly.

I have always been impressed with e-trailer.com so I am still rating this company and these Kenda tires 5 stars.

by:

After installing our new Kenda Karrier Radial Tires we have traveled 7500 miles and they are doing great. The wear is very even across all four tires.
I would purchase them again.

by:

I ordered this product and then was notified it was late coming in and could be a week late. Etrailer sent me a email telling me the tire was going to be late. I was really worried, because I was needing the tire ASAP for my trip.
Within two days after I saw the tire was shipped, it was at my front door.

I have order products from Etrailer before and have always had a good experience. This was terrific, because it got her in time for me to get it placed on my rim and ready for my trip.

Thanks Etrailer!

by:

Great tires, customer service, and I got them promptly.

by:

They were delivered in 3 days. Had to wait on one a day or two.

Doing well.

by:

This place is great. Chris was a huge help figuring out what I needed for my vintage camper. Wheels tires and baby moon caps all fit and work perfectly. Thanx!

by:

Good looking and better tires than the factory tires that came with my RV

by:

To date I have had no problems. I like tread pattern. It is used on my dump trailer.

by:

Customer service was excellent. Tires arrived boxed separately and on time.
Tires were mounted in preparation for a trip. Too soon to evaluate tires.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for and shipping was detailed and on time delivery. Will always buy with trailer first.

by:

I just received and installed these tires on 2 different trailers, so haven't used them enough to warrant a review. They arrived in great shape, and I will write a review later in the year after i've used them a while.

by:

I just received and installed these tires, so cannot give product review other than they arrived quickly from Etrailer. I will write additional review after a few thousand miles.

  • What Does a Trailer Tire Load Range Mean
I believe you mean Load Range since the Load Ranger was the unsuccessful brother of the Lone Ranger. For any given tire size there can be different load ranges. The different load ranges have different weight capacities. This has to do with the number of plies and/or ply rating of the tire. The more plies in the tire construction or the higher ply rating the higher the capacity is. Keep in mind that going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer. If we...

  • Could a Trailer Tire Size 225/75R15 Replace a 220/70R15
Yes, if you had a rim that previously had a 220/70R15 tire installed on it a size ST225/75R15 would fit and replace it easily. The sizes are incredibly close. Hopefully the rim you have is a trailer rim and not one designed for a passenger vehicle. The reason I mention that is the tire size you listed isn't a standard trailer tire size. The part # AM10256 would work well for you.

  • Can 225/75R15 Tires Replace 205/75R15 Tires on Travel Trailer
You may be able to switch to the larger tires, but it really depends on the clearance you have, so you'll want to measure. With trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to the top of your wheel well/fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. When fully inflated a 205/75R15 measures 27.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide, and a 225/75R15 measures 28.3" in diameter and 8.9" wide,...

As long as the 205/70-14 tires still have plenty of space between them and the fenders you an upgrade to a 205/75-14 tire like part # AM10256. The larger tire is the same width but it's about 3/4 of an inch larger in diameter so you need to make sure you'll still have at least 3 to 4 inches between the tire's tread and the underside of the fenders.

We do not carry the 7.00-15 tire size. The other two 15 inch trailer tire sizes that I do have available are the ST205/75-15 size and the ST225/75-15 size. The ST205/75-15 size will have a width of 8 inches and a height of 27.3 inches. This tire will be about 1 inch wider and 1 inch shorter compared to your 7.00-15 size. The ST225/75-15 size will be about 1-1/2 inches wider and about the same height (28.1 inches) as your 7.00-15 tire size, but it is designed for a minimum wheel width...

The ST205/75-15 tire size fits on a wheel with a width of 5 inches to 6-1/2 inches. The ST225/75-15 tire size will fit a wheel width of 6 inches to 7 inches. You will need to make sure the wheel you will be installing the ST225/75-15 on will have the correct wheel width. If the wheel width is not correct it will cause irregular tire wear. If you are buying the tires with the wheels then the tire will come with the correct wheel width. As far as the size difference of the two tires you...

The modern equivalent of the E78-15 tires you have would be 195/75-15, which is a passenger vehicle size. No problem if you're using it on a small motorhome, but if you're speaking of a camper or trailer, you should really use trailer tires. Trailer tires are constructed a bit differently, featuring a thicker sidewall to better handle the vertical load associated with trailers or campers. Generally, trailer tires wear on just the outside of the tire when the trailer is overloaded (which could be the case with more weight on the rear axle at the rear), there is an issue with the suspension being misaligned, or they are not fully inflated to their maximum psi. I'm not sure what your tire's max psi is, but make sure you want inflate them to the maximum psi to prevent uneven wearing, and you can find on the tire's sidewall.

  • Can I Put Bigger Tires on My Horse Trailer?
A 7.0-15 is closest to a 225/75/R15 tire and it will work so long as you have 3" - 4" of clearance between the top of your tire and the bottom of your fender. Your 205/75/R15 tire is 27.11" in diameter. A 225/75/R15 tire like item # AM10256 will have a 28.3" diameter. There is not an equivalent trailer tire to your light truck tires that are 7.00-15, which have an overall diameter of 29.4" and width of 7.8". A 225/75-15 tire such as the Karrier # AM10256 is similar, with a 28.4" diameter and 8.9" width. The tire size of ST225/75-15 in a Load Range of D like the part # AM10256 that you referenced has a weight capacity of 2,540 lbs per tire which would easily be more than enough for a tandem axle trailer that weighs 5,000 lbs. You have about twice as much tire capacity as you'd need. Ideally all of the tires are the exact same, but if this is a one time use scenario and you happen to mix tire brands for just this situation you'd be fine.
