Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great tires, absolutely no performance issues at all. Great addition to my 40 year-old trailer rebuild. Highly recommend.

by:

I have ordered 2 or 3 times from etrailer. The service and order process time has always been great. Ordered this tire and wheel combo and got it in two days.

by:

At first I was very impressed, the wheel matched my other 4 wheels perfectly and it seemed like the whole tire and wheel system was heavier than the factory stuff. The wheel still matches and its fine, but the tire was the same as every other load range D tire I've bought for this trailer. I've moved to E's in all 5 places.

by:

Tire and wheel has performed as advertised. Would buy this tire and wheel again.

by:

Very fast, quick and efficient etrailer service, tire came the day it was promised, product was what I expected, in that it looks like a quality wheel and tire which closely matched my horse trailer wheels and tires. The etrailer tire will be used as a spare for now.

by:

Great delivery, price and product. Received the tire on time and it was just as advertised. I did not have a spare for my trailer and this is a perfect match. Thanks

by:

Always amazing service

by:

Always on time, great price points.

by:

Shipping was quick, the price was good, quality appears to be good.
I would purchase again

by:

etrailer makes ordering the right wheel easy.Good written instructions combined with how to measure bolt patterns, and photos made a correct order easy.Ordered item with free shipping.Later an e-mail arrived from staff saying they were upgrading the shipping for free. Recieved the correct tire and wheel in 2 days.e-trailer beat local supplier Red neck trailer on price by nearly $50.00.Thank for a great shopping experience!

The tire and wheel from e-trailer went right on the 10000GVW Pace.We then made a trip From Kansas to Alaska and back.Drove the AlCan highway as well as Top of The World highway. At least 15000 miles with no trouble with this tire and wheel.

by:

Truly easy and great experience

by:

I ordered this tire as a spare for my 5th wheeler. It has the modular rim and a Loadstar tire mounted and came filled with 65 psi. It shipped the next day and I received it in Buffalo 3 days later. Very pleased with the delivery! The DOT on the tire was the 51st week of 2010, again very pleased that I didn't get a tire that was more than a year old from the DOT. I can only add that my 5th wheeler tires are Loadstar (same as this, D rated, 5 ply and all) and had over 25k miles on them before the DOT wore out at the 6 year mark. My trailer weighs 9k and so I will say I am very please with the reliability of Loadstar tires.

by:

Current manufacturing and in excellent condition

by:

Had exactly what I needed, and shipped the same day. Also followed up to make sure I was satisfied.

by:

Shipped fast. Rhank you once again

by:

Review based on delivery and condition/appearance of product upon receipt. Ordered as a spare and have not nor hope not to have to use it. Ordered Sun online with free promotional shipping. Shipping upgraded via email notification on Monday. Tire arrived on Wed. new tire/rim inflated to 65psi well packaged with no dings/dents from shipping. Tire DOT info correlates to manufactured in 2nd week of 2014, better than I expected. Basically with the free shipping, could get this delivered to me direct and ready to mount for cheaper than any local shop could do it out the door. Thanks ETrailer.com!

by:

Both stems leaked around the 10 month time frame. They failed within 2 weeks of each other. I had to have the local tire shop repair each of them. This is not what I expect for quality. I would not purchase again or recommend.

by:

Looks like it will do what we need. I have a horse trailer that the old rim got bent and cracked the tire. I originally ordered a different one from eTrailer and they emailed saying this one was in stock now and asked if I wanted to change my order. Great service from etrailer on that one.

by:

Awesome service. Les Schwab was $336 tire and wheel. E trailer was way cheaper. I jacked up the trailer today and it for perfectly. The situation in the US is insane inflation. This purchase saved me at least $130 dollars. I will use them again.

by:

Customer service was great - order placed Wednesday night, and arrived by noon on Friday to my front door. Packaged well, everything I expected. I had to go put the tire on right away just to see if everything fit as I thought it would. I am rebuilding an older flatbed trailer, that still had 30 year old bald tires on split rims - can't be happier to get rid of them, and into some new reliable rubber. I will be shopping for more at etrailer in the future for sure.

by:

Very nice tire and rim. Showed my brother and he asked where? So I told him about etrailer.com
Great website for my 5 x 8 utility trailer and his now. I have used before several times and will use again. Thanks etrailer.com for making it so simple to understand.

by:

It’s always easy to shop at the etrailer, Carol help me out once I had ordered the wrong lug pattern for my wheels but she fix it no problem
Always find what I’m looking for at etrailer.

  • What is the Metric Equivalent to an L78-15 Trailer Tire Size on a 1952 Vagabond Camper
What you have is the old letter size tires. An L78-15 was a larger tire which would be most likely a 235/75-15 in the newer metric size. This is not a common size for a trailer anymore but you could go to a 225/75-15. It would be a little shorter and a little more narrow. As long as the weight capacity of a 225/75-15 tire will be enough for your 1952 Vagabond camper, going to a smaller size will work. You will just need to make sure the weight capacity and bolt pattern of the tire and...

The Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 6,000-lb Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKIHUB-655-6-K will work well with wheels like the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Modular White Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range D # AM32673 each of which are rated for 2,540 lbs. • Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo with a 15 Inch Wheel and 5 on 5 Bolt Pattern
For a 5 on 5 bolt pattern I have included a link to the available tire and wheel combos that we offer. The tires on these wheels is size 205/75-15. A 225/75-15 tire will not fit on the 15 inch wheels that we carry that have the 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Our 5 on 5 wheels are 5 inches wide and the 225/75-15 tires will only fit on wheels that are 6 to 7 inches wide (measured from bead seat to bead seat). I have included a link to our tire size FAQ chart for you.

  • Availability of 225/75-15 Mounted on White Mod Trailer Wheel
The closest option is the part # AM32673 which has a ply rating of 8 and a weight capacity of 2,540 lbs that is mounted on a white mod wheel like you mentioned. We do not have a 10 ply rating available but if the weight capacity of the # AM32673 is adequate for your trailer it would work great.

  • Comparing Speed Ratings of Kenda and Taskmaster Radial Trailer Tires
Unless we indicate a higher speed rating for a tire it will generally carry a nominal 65-mph speed rating. This is the case for the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15-inch Modular White Wheel # AM32673. The Taskmaster # TA92FR does indeed offer a substantially higher M-speed rating of 81-mph. For interstate highway travel, with speed limits potentially above 65-mph, I do recommend the Taskmaster. These are for 5,200 lb axles and work with 15 inch wheels, but the hubs only come in 6 lugs wheel bolt pattern, the 6 on 5-1/2". I don't offer the Kenda ST225/75-15 Load Range D with an unpainted wheel, about as close as we can come to that is either the # AM32666 which is the same tire on a galvanized rim with a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern or the Taskmaster # TA62FR 225/75-15 Load Range D Tire mounted on a silver powder coated mod wheel with a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. I have a great solution for you, but the Karrier Wheel and Tire part # AM32673 that you referenced is rated for 65 mph. The best solution would be the Taskmaster wheel and tire part # TA42FR which has a 81 mph speed rating. This matches the wheel you mentioned in every other regard. Same size, same bolt pattern and same style white wheel. Radial tires are preferred over bias-ply. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread...

  • Is it Recommended to Run Higher Load Range Trailer Tires When Available
If your current tires have enough capacity for your trailer then you wouldn't gain anything by going with a higher load rating. There is a common misconception that if you upgrade your tires to a higher load range you can carry more weight with your trailer, but that's only partially true. There are several other components on a trailer that give it it's overall capacity. A towing setup is only as strong as it's weakest component. If that component happened to be the tires then upgrading...
