Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Robert

They have plenty of tread and still pull nice and smooth. These things last

by:

So far so good holding up well after a year or so. Just an fyi if you get tires from e-trailer they compressed don't be worried set in the sun and they will pop back in shape.

by:

Tires were an exact replacement for tires on my Load Rite utility trailer. I wanted to replace since the tires were roughly 8 years old, but still very serviceable and had a lot of life. I was being proactive in prelacing. Delivery time was as communicated and tires were installed with no issues.

by:

So far I like the tires. But I will not get them on my machine until spring! The price is great I do have the same tires on my trailer. But I paid much more!!! This is my Bobcat 530 I will be putting the tires on it I see other guys with 205/75/15 on theirs too! Maybe I won't tear the grass. Make the wife happy!!!!

by:

This is the place to go for all your trailer needs. My set of 4 tires was shipped almost immediately after ordering and they came in quickly with no hassle. I would highly recommend Etrailer for sure. Great folks to do business with!

by:

Excellent tire! This makes 6 total ordered. 2 spares and 4 on the enclosed trailer.

by:

Super fast shipping , got correct parts , what's not to like !!!

by:

Tire and wheel were exactly what I needed. Mounted up easily. Product shipped early and was in perfect condition when it arrived. Best buying experience I’ve had in a long time! Customer service rep was knowledgeable and friendly.

by:

A bent axle burned thru the tire this replaced. Seems to be a good match for OEM. Only have a couple hundred miles on the replacement tire so can’t give estimate of mileage it will give. No flats or problems

by:

Good looking tire
Plenty of rubber
See
how they hold up this spring, traveling from south Texas to northern Minnesota

by:

Ordered two 15 inch tires. Both boxes were labeled as 15 inch but one actually contained a 14 inch tire. Contacted customer service and waiting on reply.

Man, so close yet so far! Thank you for letting us know. I see our customer service team has been in touch and has you set up to have the correct tire sent out!

by:

Little disappointed on how tires where shipped in box and crushed

Etrailer Expert

10/26/2023

I am sorry that the tires were smooshed. Based on the picture I say that they will still work for you, however if you do need assistance with them, please let us know.

by:

The tires themselves are fine. But the way they are shipped is very strange (and this made mounting them extremely difficult). We ended up having to leave them out in the sun for awhile to warm up (to get the rubber would be more malleable) so we could finally mount them.

Etrailer Expert

When the tires are shipped to us they are compressed together to save space. You already did what we would suggested by allowing the tire to warm up in the sun to make it easier to work with and install on the rim.

by:

This is our repurposed 1959 travel trailer bar. We wanted to keep as much vintage charm as possible in her revocation. These brand new tires, wheels, and baby moon caps really brought the look together! Great products! Great prices! Great customer service! I will highly recommend you guys, and will do business in the future with this company!

Thank you very much!!

by:

by:

Received order in about a week. etrailer even made price adjustment due to price drop on this tire after order date. Good fit after install. Same tire used by utility trailer mfg. —still in good shape after 11 yrs, replaced due to age of original tires.

by:

Wow. Delivery on took 24 hours. Awesome customer service

by:

Was able to match same tire and wheel to existing on new trailer I purchased. With the great descriptions and photos on etrailer's website I was confidant my purchase would match and they did.

  • How to Prevent Tire Cupping on 20 Foot Gooseneck Equipment Trailer
Typically, cupping on a tire is caused by the tire bouncing on the road, which can be caused by several things. Check the air pressure in your trailer tires. A trailer tire should be kept inflated to the maximum air pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Also make sure the weight rating of your tires is not being exceeded Having one or more wheel/tires out of balance could also be causing the problem, have a tire shop check your wheels for balance. Typically, trailer tires are not as sensitive...

  • Excessive Outer and Center Tread Wear Only on One Side of New Boat Trailer
The outside tread wear usually occurs when there isn't enough load on the trailer to flatten out the axle enough. If that were the case you should see it on both sides. Just on one side could indicate that something in the suspension is loose or damaged on that one side or the spindle or other part of the running gear is damaged or was installed improperly. If the camber is off enough it could also account for the wear reaching the center of the tread. There is also the possibility that...

  • Trailer Tires Wearing On the Inside of the Tread
Tire wear just on the inside tread of the tires can indicate that the trailer is overloaded. Or it could mean that the axle has been flipped over (so the bow in the axle that is supposed to be pointed up would be pointed down) and this can cause the same issue. It also decreases the axle capacity. Most trailers do not have adjustments for the camber except to adjust the position of the whole axle. To determine if the axle is not aligned properly measure from a single point on the trailer...

  • What is the Smallest Diameter Tire That Can Fit on a 15 Inch Wheel
The lowest profile 15 inch diameter tire we offer is the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST92, which is 27.4" overall. This is a 205/75-15 tire with a capacity of 1,820-lbs. The issue you may run into with anything smaller than that is the load carrying ability is greatly reduced with less sidewall, so capacity should be paid attention to closely when trying to go smaller.

  • Is There a 13 Inch Wheel and Tire That Is Comparable in Size and Capacity to an ST205/75r15
I may have a solution for you, but there is not a 13 radial tire that I would consider a comparable replacement for a tire like the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST92, which has a 27.4" diameter and 1820-lbs capacity. Going down in size like this will also likely reduce your carrying capacity so you will want to take the GVWR of the trailer into consideration when deciding if you can make the smaller tire work. The largest tire that we have available for a...

  • Is There a Normal PSI Rating for a ST205/75D15 Size Tire
The psi rating for tires actually depends more on their load range than if they are bias or radial. For example, the Loadstar # AM1ST92 has a load range of C which is 1,820 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are ST205/75D15 size tires. You can find the operating psi rating for your tire on the sidewall. This is the pressure that it was tested and approved for when it comes to the weight capacity.

  • Trailer Tires Excessively Wearing on Outside of Tread
Are you speaking of the trailer tires or the tires on your tow vehicle? Typically, trailer tires should be kept inflated to the maximum pressure listed on the tire's sidewall. An under inflated tire will typically have wear at the inner and outer edges, but it's recommended to fully inflate the tires to remove one possible cause. Other factors that could cause the wear you describe are excessive sway, a damaged axle or suspension components or tire scrub. I'd suspect suspension damage...

The Kenda tire # AM1ST92 is now rated for 81 miles per hour regardless of the load on them. Running it over that speed for extended periods of time can cause excessive heat build up and lead to tire failure. Another option in the same size, 205/75-15, that has the same 81 miles per hour speed rating is # TTWTRTM2057515C. It is a radial tire so it will run cooler than a bias ply tire. I would not recommend using passenger vehicle tires on your trailer. You will only want to use trailer tires that have the letters ST in the size which stand for special trailer. As for determining the bolt pattern of your trailer without wheels, I have linked a FAQ article on determining the bolt pattern of trailer wheels. You will...

Yes, this happens with trailers when they are unloaded. The weight of the load, in this case the boat, prevents that from happening. The only way to stop it from happening is to have the trailer weighed down or reduce the air pressure in the tires a little. I do not recommend reducing the air pressure though because you would have to fill them back up again with the boat on the trailer. Putting weight on the trailer is also probably not the easiest thing to accomplish when you are out...

There are a number of issues that can cause irregular tire wear but generally this would be the tire wearing more on one side, not necessarily that the entire tire has worn faster than the others. If the latter is true then this could be an issue with the amount of air you have in each tire or the way the trailer is loaded perhaps.
