Can a Larger Tire Size Be Installed on an Express Trailer With 205/75-15 Tires From the Factory

Question:

My ExpressTrailer came from the factory with 205/75-15 tires on 5 x 4.5 rims. Load range C. I would like to move to 225/75-15 tires because of the increased load range to D .Will they fit? My understanding is these 225s are 1 greater in diam.but Im not sure how much wider. Any input appreciated. As always, Thank you,

The ST205/75-15 tire size fits on a wheel with a width of 5 inches to 6-1/2 inches. The ST225/75-15 tire size will fit a wheel width of 6 inches to 7 inches. You will need to make sure the wheel you will be installing the ST225/75-15 on will have the correct wheel width. If the wheel width is not correct it will cause irregular tire wear. If you are buying the tires with the wheels then the tire will come with the correct wheel width.

As far as the size difference of the two tires you will need to make sure the extra height and width will clear on your trailer. The Karrier ST225/75-15 Radial Trailer Tire, Load Range D, part # AM10256, is 1-1/4 inches taller and 3/4-inch wider than the ST205/75-15 tire size

Trailer tires should always be inflated to their maximum psi rating for best performance and longest life.

I am including links to a FAQ page on trailer tire sizing and a FAQ page on trailer tire information.

Also, you will need to remember that just my installing a larger tire with a higher load carrying capacity will not always increase the load you will be able to carry. The tire is just one part in your suspension system on the trailer. Your load capacity will always be determined by the lowest rated part in the complete suspension system of your trailer.
