Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

I haven’t mounted them on my trailer but I’m concerned about quality control . Two are identical . The third seems to be narrower along the inside wall and won’t stand on its own like the other two .

Hi Gene, Thanks for your feedback! Sometimes tires will look skinnier after being stacked up in the warehouse. Once they are mounted and set at the correct air pressure it will perform as it should.

Tires on my camper have been good. I did have one blow out, but I thought the service I got to have it replaced was great. Of course I have no way of knowing what caused the blowout, but it was replaced no problem and I appreciate that. Thank you

by:

Tires came in squashed tire shop had a hard time inflating them

by:

Need a tire for my boat trailer what I can't find around, but sure enough I found it 1000 miles away. Came 1 day earlier, very happy with there service.A ++++

by:

These tires are great. I replaced the car tires that were on my utility trailer when I bought it and the trailer seems to tow much better and can now handle the weight of a load of wood much easier with the stiffer sidewalls.
Had them mounted and balanced at a local tire shop which is most likely why the trailer tows better.
I would definitely go with these again.

by:

AWESOME Tires, the only tires I use on all my personal vintage trailers as well as Client Restorations that come through our shop! Whether it is a fully restored museum piece or a trailer we are rescuing from cross country, these are the tires of our choice!!

Was notified and delivered right away

by:

Just what I ordered

by:

This tire is just what I needed, I purchased my car trailer several years earlier and it did not come with a spare tire & wheel. Worried me some early on about being on the road having a vehicle on the trailer and having tire trouble especially since the tire size could be difficult to find at a lot of tire stores. I feel a lot safer now having a spare for my car trailer. Having a spare tire and wheel for my trailer, takes the worry out of being on the road miles from anyplace I could have found what I needed.

by:

Tires weren’t stored very well. Looks like they had something very heavy on them for some time and deformed them. They will be very difficult to mount or might not mount at all. Getting the bead to set will be very difficult.

by:

Quick and easy order, fast delivery

by:

I was disappointed in the condition of the tire when it arrived. The tire was squashed down and so out of shape I had a hard time getting air in it. It was like something very heavy had sat on top for it for a long time. I hope it holds the air.

by:

This is an excellent company and product. The tires were shipped ASAP and came as ordered in a couple of days. They look "outstanding" on my 1972 camper, priced very well and with great service!!

Thank you,

John

by:

This tire came with my new trailer. It has outlasted all other brands of tires I have had on my trailers.

These tires last longer than other trailer tires I have put on my trailer. But still why do any of them have to wear out? :

by:

ordered online with no problems. delivered promptly. Good product

by:

Easy transaction

by:

Good tire for the price point. I put them on a 20 yr old trailer. The rim was really nice for the price. I blew out a tire towing my ATV back from a hunting trip, which was why I ordered the tires and rim. Rim fits my old trailer good will be ordering another.

Fast shipping. I have ordered from E trailer in the past and they are very good. I got a 20K reese 5th wheel hitch and bed rails last time. I highly recommend them . My buddy uses them also for his boat trailer parts Ed

by:

Ordered five trailer tires in load range D. I was excited to receive them promptly from etrailer through UPS and glad to report that etrailer was the only source that I could find to carry the desired quality of tire I was looking for. Thanks again to etrailer.com

by:

etrailer.com by far has the best customer service I have ever dealt with! As always my tires arrived just two days after I placed the order. Absolutely amazing! The value is incredible too. Best price I found and free shipping to boot! I will continue to make etrailer the first and only stop for all of my trailer needs.

by:

I have used dias belted tires on my 31 ft travel trailer for several years. Have never had one single problem. In fact I plan to purchase more.

by:

High quality tire. Had it mounted to the new wheel. I now have a good spare for my trailer again. Great service from etrailer as usual. Thanks!

by:

Good Price Great Service!

by:

Good piece of mind to have these heavy duty tires on my car carrying tandem. I overload it to haul my little dozer and these tires are mighty.

by:

Fast shipping as always. Haven’t pulled the trailer yet with them, but all reviews on here suggested these tires are a dream

  • How To Determine The Trailer Wheel Replacement Needed
There are a few measurements needed to ensure you get the correct wheel replacement, but it is difficult to determine from just a picture. I've attached articles to help with the proper fit by measuring the bolt pattern of your wheel, the width from bead seat to bead seat, and the diameter. If you need further help, send me the photos and the dimensions you have and I'd be happy to assist.

  • Explanation for Trailer Tire Tread that is Convex Rather Than Flat
I consulted with our resident tire expert, and we're both at a loss. Heat build-up caused by over or under inflation, overloading the tire or failing to observe the speed rating of the tire (65mph in most cases) are the typical causes of premature tire failure. When you describe the tires as being 'rounded', I'm assuming that you mean that the tread portion of the tire is convex, rather than being flat so it makes full contact with the pavement. Over-inflation usually causes this, but...

  • Size Difference Between Tire Sizes 215/75-15 and 225/75-15
The difference between those two sizes is the 215/75-15 is 10 mm narrower and .6 of an inch shorter than the 225/75R15 size. Typically the larger sizes will have higher weight capacities as well.

  • How Do Trailer Tire Weight Capacities Work
Tires like the part # AM1ST96 that have a 2,540 lbs at 65 psi are rated per tire. So if you had a tandem axle trailer you would multiply 2,540 by 4 to get the total trailer tire capacity that you would have. You should note that to get the full capacity of the tire it will need to be inflated to it's max psi rating.

  • ST225/75R15 Tire Mounted on a Galvanized Wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern
The size difference between the two size is that the ST225/75-15 will be about 1.4 inches taller than a ST205/75-15. For a tire in the ST225/75R15 size on a steel galvanized rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM32468. This is a radial tire which is a better construction than the bias-ply you mentioned. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler...

  • What Size Wheels Work with ST225/75-15 Trailer Tires
Trailer tire size ST225/75-15 will fit on 15x6, 15x6-1/2, or 15x7 inch wheels. The most common size and what we carry is a 15x6 inch wheel. These wheels come in several different bolt patterns. The most common is either a 5 on 4-1/2 or 6 on 5-1/2. I have linked an article that shows how to measure for bolt pattern. I have also linked all of the 15x6 inch wheels for you.

  • Can a Different Tire Size be Used in Place of a 7.00-15 Tire
Size 7.00-15 is actually a currently used tire size. It is a light truck tire. Light truck tires are sometimes used on RVs and trailers (as long as the LT is at the end of the size). It is a bias ply tire. It is rated for 2,402 pounds at 70 psi. The overall diameter is 29.4 inches and the width is 7.8 inches. It fits 15" x 5", 15" x 5-1/2", 15" x 6" rims. We do not carry this size. By comparison, an ST205/75-15 # AM1ST92 is rated lower at 1,820 pounds at 50 psi. And it is wider at 8.1...

  • Can an ST225/75D15 Tire be Used as a Temporary Spare for an ST205/75D15 Trailer Tire
You can use an ST225/75D15 as a temporary spare (provided the wheel is 6 or 6-1/2 inches wide) but you definitely do not want to have it on for long. I would say that it is fine to use to get you to a place that can repair or replace the 205/75-15. For replacement 205/75-15s we have a load range C, # AM1ST92 that would work great for you. The 225 will be 13/16 inches wider and about 1 inch taller so it will affect how the trailer tracks and put added stress on the 205 side. I have included...

  • Trailer Tire Wear on Right Side, Outside Tread Only and Trailer Pulls Hard to One Side
If you have more of the weight in the trailer on the left side then that could explain the uneven wear. Axles have a bow or camber in the middle. When weight is in the trailer it straightens out the axle some and the tires should wear evenly. When there is not enough weight the camber causes the tires to toe in at the bottom which would lead to outside tread wear. If you do not believe this is the issue then it is possible that the suspension is worn more on the right side or it could...

  • At What Age Should Trailer Tires be Replaced
Trailer tires really shouldn't be used after 6 years of age. The materials of the tire just breaks down to the point they become compromised and will eventually fail. In nearly every situation the treads will still be seemingly good and it's age that wears them out before the tread is gone. Tire covers to protect them from the sun like what you can see at the attached link is a great way to help keep them in good shape.

  • Trailer Tire Replacement Recommendation for a 7.00-15 LT
The closest ST (special trailer) size to that is 225/75-15. These tires can fit on a 6 to 7 inch wide rim. But they are a little taller at 28.1 inches versus 27.88 for a 7.00x15. Trailer tires are designed with a thicker side wall to handle more vertical load. For a bias ply 225/75-15, you can use # AM1ST96. This tire is rated for 2,540 pounds at 65 psi.

  • What Does ST in Trailer Tire Size ST225/75D15 Mean
ST on a tire size like the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST96 you referenced indicates "special trailer" which means it was designed specifically for use in a trailer application. This type of tire can only be used on a trailer. For more info on trailer tires check out the help article I attached. There's more info on the different trailer tire constructions as well.

  • What Can Cause a Trailer Tire to Fail Prematurely
Using the wrong tire pressure can cause the problems you described but it sounds like that's not your issue. I wouldn't blame it on tire scrubbing like you mentioned either. The other things to check is age (probably not case since it sounds like your tires are newer), weight capacity, and speed rating.

  • What Might Cause Outside of Trailer Tires to Wear Out Quickly
It's not uncommon for what you are experiencing to be related to axle alignment issues or even a bent axle. I'd recommend having a shop who can do trailer alignments check out the trailer to see if they can find an issue before replacing the tires. Since the outside of the tires are wearing out I would guess the axle may be bent forward.

  • Is LoadStar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire a Tubeless Tire
Good question; the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM1ST96 is a tubeless tire, and that is the norm for trailer tires now. Bias tires don't require a tube, and even though some people still use them, we do not recommend it because it can cause the tire to overheat if towed at any type of speed. You've made a smart choice with the Loadstar, which are highly rated tired by our customers, as you can see by the outstanding rating in the customer reviews section on...

  • What Tire Pressure Should Trailer Tires be Kept At
Always go by what's on the sidewall of the trailer as the amount of tire pressure to use when the tire is cold. This will ensure you get the full capacity of the tires and prevent heat build up. The other thing you need to consider is the max speed rating for the tire. You need to stay under what the speed rating is too as that will cause excess heat too. It's normal to see some pressure increases on the highway but as long as you are under the weight capacity for the tire, at the max pressure,...

The modern equivalent size to 8.55-15 would be 225/75-15. For highway use, I'd recommend going with a radial tire for its better ride quality and its better ability to shed excess heat. For a radial tire, I'd recommend the Kenda Karrier 225/75-15 Load Range D tire, part # AM10256. The tire has a 2540 lb per tire capacity. If you won't be running the trailer on the highway much, a less expensive bias-ply tire like part # AM1ST96 would work great for you. I've linked to product videos...

All special trailer tires regardless of size should always be inflated to the maximum psi pressure rating that is noted on the tire sidewall. Bias ply cords run at 32 degree angle and radials run at a 90 degree angle to allow the tire to flex more.
