Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordered 14 inch rims and tires for my 2007 Jayco travel trailer. Easy ordering, prompt delivery, easy to install, very satisfied with every aspect of etrailer!!!

Were your original rims 13 inch? I have 13 inch rims with ST18580D13 bias ply load range D tires on my Jayco Jayfeather Ultralite 228 trailer and am looking to switch to radials in load range D... These are about as close to the original tire size as I can find. If you did up-size from smaller rims and tires, how is it working out for you?

Jim Y.

7/3/2014

Ernest,Yes I had 13 18580D13s as standard equipment. Put on Hankook 195 75R14 8 ply load range D 2094 lbs at 65psi. Tires fit fine. There is hardly any difference in the width and height increased maybe 1 inch. I have taken the trailer on logging roads with pot holesbad washboard without any issues. With the 13 inch tires on i had 2 clearance on each side and about 7-8 from the top of tire to the wheel well Jayco will not give you any help and Dexter, axle manufacture, sent information but to check the clearances out required a lift which i did not have. Common sense dictated the 14 tires would work and they do. Hope this helps just check the side wall and top clearances.Hope this helpsclearances

Ive had no issues or concerns with these tires over the past year.

by:

purchased 2 Kenda trailer tires, date on tires were 2 months less than 3 years old. I HAVE BEEN PURCHASING TIRES, WHEELS AND OTHER ITEMS FROM E-TRAILER FOR MORE THAN 12YEARS.NEEDLESS TO SAY THE TIRES WERE SHIPPED BACK.As AN e-trailer customer, not at all happy with this purchase.

by:

Trailer camping is seasonal here in Colorado, so it took me a while to get the tires mounted and put to use. Now that they are on the road, I'm very pleased with them and feel much safer traveling on good rubber!

by:

The tires are perfect, just what I needed. The Redarc break controller was easy to install with the plug and play wire harness for my 2013 Tacoma and it works great. Shipping was fast and reliable.

For the packaging the tires each had there strong cardboard box however, the Redarc break controller box was put in with one of the tire boxes and definitely took a light beating and almost fell out of its package. It still works fine and I’m happy to have it but etrailer I don’t think that’s a great idea to just put in with the tire box not protected. It could crack the plastic casing of the break controller housing and mess up its calibration . It makes sense for shipping to put with the tire but at least should give it some protection from the tire.

Thanks!

Order arrived earlier than expected. Order processes was extremely easy. Exactly what we wanted. Will be ordering all our trailer tires from them from here on our.

So I ordered these tires on the 19th and arrived on the 21st. Fast shipping. I havent installed them yet. But will soon. Overall impressions of this tire is very good so far. Came shipped in individual boxes. Will rereview after i get them installed and have a few miles on them.

So far these tires have exceeded my expectations. The wear is minimal and tracks good. No problems.2.5k miles.

by:

Ordering through Etrailer was easy. I was struggling to find the tire for my trailer and they made it easy.

by:

I can't say anything about it, as it was bought to replace a 10 yr old, rotted spare tire on my travel trailer. It balanced out good and still holds air, but has never been on the ground.

by:

Bought 2 of these tires in 2015, just bought another to replace one that had serious blowout at 60 mph after 16,000 miles. Fortunately no damage from the blowout. Very happy with the tires up until then and not sure of cause of the blowout. It was the tire on the passenger side so maybe picked up something on roadside, rumble strips or hitting a curb. I still like the higher air pressure and load capacity so that's why I got another one. I use these on a single axle light weight travel trailer. I'm including pics of damaged tire and comparison of new and used (~20,000 mi.) I think the wear rate is good for a trailer.

by:

I ordered these tires for my rv trailer because my old tires were 7 years old and I had a blowout on one of them. The tires I received are already 2 years old according to the build dates on them. That doesn’t make me happy. I know you say they are kept in a climate controlled warehouse and all that , but who really knows. If I need more tires in the future I’ll look somewhere else.

by:

If you need anything, eTrailer is the place!!!

I have ordered multiple items over the years and have always received excellent customer service, great products, and quick shipping.

The most recent order was the Karrier "D" rated tire, which I have ordered 4 others of the same from eTrailer. This is one of the best trailer tires I have used in over 30 years of boating, and one of the few "D" rated 14" tires that meet my load requirements.

These things ride amazing, no flat spots from sitting in the off-season, traction and wear is excellent. I don't see how you could get a better tire or at this price anywhere.

by:

Perfect match to what I had originally. Got it mounted this morning and back on the trailer. Ready for the next adventure.
Thanks again etrailer.com. And a shout out to Justin for being helpful on all my orders. etrailer.com is my go-to for all of my trailer needs.

by:

Delivered sooner than promised! Have made one long 1800 mile road trip with rain and bad roads. Tires performed great. Trailer tracks well. Sat in storage for 4 winter months with no loss of tire pressure. Very satisfied so far.

by:

We've ordered these tires multiple times for a number of different trailers, they last a long time, durable and great prices.

by:

So far I am pleased with my purchase the only problem is the steel valve stem washer does not fit these wheels and the washer needed is a very special size that is not easy to find. I ended up having to mount them with standard stems.

by:

Awesome as always. Item arrived as stat ed.

by:

This is my 3rd or 4th transaction with etrailer and each one has been great! Fast shipping and quality products. They will continue to be the first place I look when I need anything for our camper or my truck! The Kendra tires look great. Will update after a summer to see how they pull.

One year in and going strong. No issues at all after several long trips. The tires barely show wear and we are very happy with the purchase!

by:

Quality was what I expected and delivery was even better than expected. I mounted the tire myself and everything worked great. The only issue I have is with the cost of the tire, but what do you do about this crazy inflation? I could not expect anything more from etrailer and will definitely buy from them again!

by:

Working great. The piece of mind provided by properly rated, balanced tires on my single axle trailer is phenomenal.

by:

After checking all tire dealers in Tucson for a trailer tire with a load rating of 2200 lbs I found these at Etrailer! My trailer already has these and I needed a new set. Great tires..

by:

These tires were just what we needed. Long life and higher speed rating. After a couple of trips with our 16' Forest River Wolf Pup these tires have held up beautifully. Running these at 70 mph is no problem with the speed rating.
etrailer always has the best price and plenty of helpful information.

by:

Fast shipping, good to go.

by:

I bought two tires for my pontoon boat it had one axle under it tires are awesome and now I'm in the process of putting a second axle under the boat so I ordered two more tires for the new axle, old ones holding up great. Better pic later

  • Availability of Aluminum Wheel and Tire for Trailer Tire Size 205/75R14
We have aluminum wheels with the tire size you want of 205/75R14 like with the Westlake Jaguar Wheel and Tire part # 274-000014 but not with the wheel of the # AM22329 that you mentioned. To have that specific wheel you'd need the part # AM22329 with a tire like the # AM10235 that you'd have to have mounted locally as we don't have a way to mount tires here.

  • Which Load Range 205/75-14 Tires for Tandem Axle Travel Trailer With 7600 lb GVWR
A 6 ply rated tire roughly translates to a load range C, so that's probably what you have right now. A load range B in the ST205/75-14 size has a 1430 lb per tire capacity for a 5720 lb capacity for 4 tires which wouldn't come close to your GVWR. A load range C gets a bit closer with a 1760 lb per tire/ 7040 per 4 tire capacity and a load range D (which is what I'd recommend) has a 2200 lbs per tire/ 8800 for 4 tire capacity. If your actual loaded weight of the trailer is less than...

  • Can Tire Size Be Increased from 14-Inch to 15-Inch on 2003 Coleman Utah Pop-Up Camper
You certainly can move to a larger size trailer tire as long as you have enough room in the wheel wells. You might want to contact the camper manufacturer with its VIN to confirm they have no concerns about a larger diameter tire. Based on my review of photos of your Utah you may have a tight fit with a larger tire. You also can potentially select a higher load range tire in your current size. This would mean less heat build-up since the tire would be operated below its maximum capacity....

  • Will Load Range D Tires Fit on a 2015 Keystone Bullet 247RKS With ST205/75R14 Load Range C Tires?
You are able to move to a Load Range D # AM10235 tire in place of the Load Range C # AM10234 on your 2015 Keystone Bullet 247RKS. Do understand that this will not increase the weight capacity you are able to carry with your camper. Your Keystone is using 3,500lbs axles which should not see over 1,750lbs per tire and your rims are rated for up to 1,900lbs. With the load range D tires having a capacity of 2,200lbs this will create a harsher ride inside your trailer as the tires are more likely...

Your trailer tire size F78-14st is an older tire size. The new label for that tire size is ST205/75-14. They are the same tire basically. For use with a 4,000 lb axle though you'd need a Load Range D to ensure you have the capacity needed. For that we have the Kenda ST205/75-14 # AM10235 which has a capacity of 2,200 lbs when inflated to 75 psi.

The closest tire size we have to the passenger vehicle tire size you mentioned of P185/75-14 is the size ST205/75-14 like the part # AM10235 which would work well. Vehicle tires are more designed for steering axles so their sidewalls aren't reinforced enough for the vertical load of a trailer so we recommend strongly you go with a trailer tire instead of what you have now.

  • Should Bias Tires be Upgraded to Radial for Towing Trailer Around the US
The only reason you would want to use bias tires over radials is if you were primarily using the trailer for off-road purposes like around the farm. If the trailer is going to be used on pavement the majority (or all) of the time then by all means use radials because they tend to have higher speed ratings and are built to have more flex and dissipate heat better than bias. See review video. This is a radial tire in a Load Range D. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. • Can I put Truck Wheels on My Trailer
To answer your first question, technically you can put truck wheels on your trailer, there are just a few things you will need to look out for. First, automotive grade wheels tend to have more of an offset than trailer wheels, meaning the center of the wheel usually sits either further away from or closer to the vehicle. When you mount the wheels to your trailer, just make sure you have about 2-3 inches of clearance between the tire and the inside wall of the trailer or fender. If your...

We actually have a trailer tire in your current size that has an 81 mph speed rating and has a 2,200 lb weight capacity with the part # AM10235. This would be your easiest and simplest solution to gain more weight capacity and higher speed rating. The speed rating for trailer tire # AM3S560, is 65 miles per hour. You would not want to go over 65 miles per hour because that will generate more heat. Heat is the number one enemy of tires, especially trailer tires. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall that, when overloaded, ran at higher speeds, or under inflated, will generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail.
