If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.


The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.


In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at these Kodiak Eight-Inch Hub and Rotor Disc Brake Assemblies. This kit is going to feature these two brake assemblies that will allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes for superior performance. These are going to upgrade a single 3,500 pound capacity axle. Our rotor diameter is eight inches, and it's got the five on 4 1/2-inch bolt pattern, so this will work for your wheels from 10 inches to 13 inches. Upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance.

It's also gonna provide smoother and more controlled braking than you get with your drum brake, so it is gonna be a great upgrade for you. We do have the ceramic brake pads that are going to increase your stopping power. And then, back behind there, you can't really see it, but there is a large, 2 1/4-inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide faster, responsive braking for you. This is going to help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling as you're going down the road, so it's gonna be much more comfortable for you as well. This is going to require less maintenance than your drum brakes, so it's gonna save you time and money over the long run.

You've got the one piece hub and rotor assembly that's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. We do have the vented design on the rotor that's gonna dissipate heat faster and prevent premature brake pad wear. And this does have a nice, high-quality, automotive-grade construction, so it is gonna be very long lasting for you. Our disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes, and so you wanna make sure that you have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1,500 PSI or above so everything will activate properly. So we do sell those separately here at etrailer.com.

If you don't already have those, we can add that on to make sure that you have everything that you need to upgrade your trailer. So this kit will not include the actuator or brake lines, but it is going to include these two Dacromet-plated, cast iron hub and rotor assemblies, your two Dacromet-coated, cast iron calipers here, your two Dacromet-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets on the backside here. That's what's going to mount your calipers, that is the four-bolt flange configuration. We're also going to get our four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts to get that all mounted in place. In addition to that, you're also going to get two inner bearings, as well as two outer bearings.

Those numbers are on the screen there for you if that matters to you. We do have the inner and outer races that are pre-installed in the unit, so I can't show those to you, but you can see those numbers on the screen there as well. We're also going to get two, EZ lube grease caps and grease seals, those numbers are on the screen there for you as well. But those EZ lube caps do come out so that you can easily put your grease in your spindle, get everything lubricated the way you need to in between your regular changes. And so our grease cap outer diameter is going to be 1.98 inches. Our inner diameter for our grease seal is gonna be 1.719, and our outer diameter is 2.565 inches. In addition to all that, we're also going to get our 10, 1/2-inch, zinc-plated, steel lug nuts to get mounted in place there on our pre-installed 1/2-inch wheel bolts. So the Dacromet plating that's on these is going to make these a great option, especially for your boat trailers and trailers that are used in coastal areas, or where the roads are heavily treated with salt. These are going to last up to 300 to 400 hours of salt spray, that's what they're rated for. So they are gonna hold up really well for you. Now when you're looking at your good, better, best, stainless steel is going to be a little bit longer lasting than your Dacromet plating here, but it is a little bit more expensive. So if you are looking for something that's gonna last you for years, this will work for you. It's just not gonna last as long as stainless steel, but it is gonna be a better price point. So depending on what matters most to you, these are gonna do a great job, especially in those high-salt areas. If you're gonna be putting your boat in salt water and that sort of thing, it'll do a good job for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. My parts seem to be old inventory that have been moved around in the warehouse for a while. Parts came loosely packaged in a kodiak factory box. Hub/rotor and brackets banging into each other causing scratches on surfaces. The races and bolts that hold the hub/rotor have a bit of surface rust. It's nothing to affect the performance of the parts but it is what it is. A little scotch brite and good as new.

    Hey Jeremey, this is a great question but the Kodiak disc brake kits like the part # KOD87FR are designed to keep the wheel placement the exact same so that you wouldn't have to worry about frame or fender clearance issues. This would not rub on your torsion axle at all.

    Calipers, like the 3.5K Kodiak Disc Brake Caliper # KDBC225DAC, are really only designed to work with same-branded systems so I can't recommend using this for your Tie Down Engineering system. If you need to only replace the calipers then you'll want to get Tie Down Engineering calipers, otherwise you can switch to a whole Kodiak setup with the Kodiak Disc Brakes # KOD87FR which has all of the parts designed to fit together.

    Thank you for providing that information. That is an EZ Loader custom trailer that uses # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings. If you're looking for a hub/rotor assembly you can use the # KOD87FR as a replacement. If you already have an idler hub and need an over-the hub rotor you can use the # K2R35D for a replacement. It looks like you're using oil now, but you can replace that with grease # L11390. If you want to stick with an oil bath setup we also have the # KOD77FR available...

    As long as your actuator is rated for 1,600 psi you'll be able to use 2 sets of the Kodiak Disc Brakes # KOD87FR, yes. You should be able to confirm this by checking for the rating on your actuator itself. It will either be stamped into it or there will be a sticker showing the rating. If your trailer is currently equipped with disc brakes then it will be rated for these disc brakes, but if you have drum brakes I'll need some photos of your actuator so we can get you a replacement that...

    You would have to convert to Disc Brakes # KOD87FR to fit a 10" wheel on your 3,500lb axle. This hub uses the common 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. These are Dacromet coated which is almost as good as a galvanized coating but is definitely better than just paint. Depending on our snowmobile trailer you would need either a surge style disc brake Actuator # T47457007K or a electric over hydraulic Actuator # CAR-HBA16-2.
