Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Nice replacement for older Kodiak disc brakes. The quality looks like it's pretty good, but only time will tell since. The kit was simple to install if you already have similar style setup and axle mounting bracket.

This disc brake kit - Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10" Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs was used with the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs

Finished drum to disc brake conversion on my 1993 year model Bass Cat trailer. Installation went smoothly and the UFP-A60 Actuator replaced the obsolete Atwood Actuator. Shortened the outer member a bit and added a 1" flat bar to the bottom for welding of 4" channel trailer frame.

Disc brake installation went smooth and easy. It would have been better to have the adapter plate mounting hardware. One think to note about these Kodiak disc brakes, the bleeder valve is a two part valve. Be sure to open the 516 hex bleeder screw and not the 38 screw in bushingseat.

Easy installation onto my boat trailer. I would have gave it five stars if they would have included the bolts, lock washers, and nuts to secure the caliper bracket. Would have made things way easier.

I just replaced the brakes on my trailer with this, Kodiak Disc Brake Kit in Dacromet. It replaces the same kit but in plain black E-coat finish. The only reason was a few years ago I lost a hub and left 1 disc covered in grease and when I replaced the hubs on that axle (on the side of the road) I disconnected the brake system to simplify things. It's sat for the last 2-3 years for the most part so instead of cleaning up the others and just replacing discs, a bracket, pads etc. and having to clean the calipers good, I decided it was wiser to start from scratch for not much more cost. I'm glad I did. I feel better with a new brake system, the Dacromet finish should do very well (although the E-coat didn't show any issues). The kit was easy to install and get going and works great.

Not that it's important, and wasn't the reason, but it looks good too. I also replaced all wheels and tires with A21514RTM45SM and when I got back from the first road test, I was pleasantly surprised about how good the wheels and brakes looked as I inspected everything. Having the light color finish made it much easier to see when working under the trailer where it's darker also. Just a bonus! And once again, eTrailer couldn't be beat for cost and quick delivery!

I have a 2011 Lund impact 1775 on a Shorelander single axle trailer which tips the scale around 2500# dry. I felt that surge brakes would be a smart investment and take some pressure off my Ford F150 to help stop that beast. I researched kits, actuators, calipers and rotors and decided on the Kodiak caliper and rotor kit and the Titan actuator. eTrailer had both in stock, a convenient hose kit to boot and fair price so I purchased the lot from them. Delivery was very quick and all of the hardware arrived together and in good shape. It took me one afternoon to assemble the actuator on my swing \-away tongue and another to install the calipers and rotors. There was one snag with the hose kit, in that one of the hoses was incorrect. I contacted Bryan at eTrailer and he was very accommodating; rushing the correct hose to me and then following up by phone when I received it. It took about two hours to finish the installation and I couldn't be more pleased, both with the quality of the products and the first-rate service! I have yet to bleed the system and take it out for a run but I don't anticipate any issues. I fully recommend eTrailer, their products and service!

I want to thank you again for your assistance in getting me the correct parts for my trailer brake installation. I took three major road trips with the boat last year and the trailer brakes worked flawlessly. The major reasons I installed the braking system were: the overall weight of the boat and trailer in relationship to my pickup 2006 F150 and braking performancesafety on wetslick roads. Both of these concerns were tested last year with wonderful results. I have been telling my friends, with similar trailer packages, to investigate your product. Thanks again,

by:

After a year there still working great and rust is minimal, would definitely use etrailer for all my trailer needs

by:

Nice quality caliper/Disc set.

Hard
to find a setup that has rotors without the Hub and Disc as a one piece unit.

This Kodiak has a few configuration options for a separate Disc Rotor.

Only one problem is that the shipping container had no packing for the protection of the components.

The brake caliper hose fittings had broken through the boxes and were exposed outside the packaging. The seal plugs had fallen out of the brass caliper connections.

This is a less than acceptable and desirable way to protect the units.

They are still excellent in performance and quality.

by:

Worked out perfect, actually used as front brakes on a 1927 roadster.

by:

Straight forward installation although wish the installation nuts & bolts to mount the caliper brackets would have been included in the kit. Especially like the greater piston size and fact that they pull back after braking so the pads are not dragging on rotor when not braking.
Vastly improved braking and stopping distance over the old electric brakes.

Been a year, brakes are so responsive and work so much better will never rely on the old way further. Still working great, never any problem and have never experienced any fade. Switch now and enjoy the added safety.

by:

The brakes fit my 2006 Ranger boat trailer, w 15 in tires, I like this style of brake for one reason, the disc just fits over the hub and there is no messing with bearing and getting greasy.

they work great, i put them in my 06 Range boat trailer and know i have breaks once again.

by:

Paired this set of brakes with a HydraStar electric over hydraulic actuator for a cargo trailer that did not have brakes. Very satisfied with the quality look and performance so far. This set up will lesson the load on my truck/camper and allow for a more relaxed ride knowing I have additional stopping power. The instructions & available online information at Etrailer made it pretty simple. I expect these to perform as intended for many years. Etrailer was a great choice for me.

Very fast service

by:

A couple of years after purchasing my boat I realized the the brake calipers on my boat trailer had seized. As a result the rotors were rusty and pitted. I selected this kit on etrailer because it had great reviews and was in the price range I had budgeted. The kit was easy to install and had great instructions. Towing my boat is actually a positive experience now that it has properly functioning brakes!

by:

Wish in the description that if you were swapping drums for discs that you had to get new hubs. Otherwise excellent experience.

by:

I am reviewing the components and etrailer as they are not installed yet. Online ordering was easy - I was contacted immediately with shipping time and tracking numbers - it all went really well. The components showed up on time and in good condition. The boxes were a little hammered but UPS does that. Thanks etrailer good service - good prices: what else do you want?

by:

Perfect fit,and working great.

by:

After reviewing several choices for adding brakes on my new Haulmark cargo trailer, I decided to go with these Kodiak over-the-hub disc brakes. They fit perfectly and am very well pleased with them.

  • Will Using Separate Hub/Rotor Push the Wheels Out Further Compared to Combined Hub/Rotor 3,500 Axle
It is possible for the wheel to be pushed out further when using a separate hub and rotor as opposed to an integrated hub and rotor but there are a few factors at play so I do recommend matching the front and rear axle in regards to the type of hub. For a 3,500 lb axle you'll use part # K2R35D or part # K2HR35DKG for combined which also requires part # DBRKHW35EZ.

  • Replacement Unidentifiable Disc Brake Caliper for Boat Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
I do have an option for you but I think you'll have a hard time finding a direct replacement for the disc brake caliper you have now as there are no identifying marks and I am not able to confirm this for you. Therefore, I really think the most painless solution would be a new kit. The problem is, disc brake calipers are not exactly universal as they are specific to both the mounting bracket and rotor. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2HR35D or part # K2R35D are both great options.

Hey Morris, to determine what would be needed to add brakes to your trailer will come down to a few things. First we'd need to know the axle capacity of the trailer, it would need to have brake flanges on the spindles, and we'd need to know the wheel bolt pattern. I attached a help article that will walk you through this entire process. And then to allow the brakes to activate in the event of a disconnect you would need to have a breakaway kit installed like the # 3802336.
