If you take your boat down to the coast every weekend, you know how corrosive saltwater can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. And the stainless steel calipers are rustproof. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 10 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set, and this is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can experience the superior performance of disc brakes. The two disc brake assemblies that we have here are going to allow you to upgrade a single 3,500 pound capacity axle with the number 84 spindles. Our rotors are 10 inches in diameter, and we do have the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. So, these are going to fit your 13 inch and larger wheels. So, upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to help dramatically shorten your stopping distance, and it's gonna provide smoother, more controlled braking than you're used to with your drum brakes.
So, it's gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling as you're going down the road. We are gonna have the ceramic brake pads that are going to help increase your stopping power, and you can't really see it, but up here, at the top, we are going to have a large, 200 quarter inch diameter stainless steel piston that's going to provide fast, responsive breaking for us. These are also going to require a minimal maintenance. So, unlike your drum breaks where you have to tighten them every so often, these are gonna be pretty self-sufficient. There's gonna be fewer parts that will need to be replaced in the future, so it's gonna save you time and money.
Your break pads will eventually wear down, so you will have to switch those out. It's a pretty simple process, but it is going to be far less maintenance than your drum breaks, and, because these do have the one piece hub and rotor assembly. It's gonna help reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. We do also have the vented design here, so that's gonna help dissipate your heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear, and these are going to be a high quality automotive grade construction, so they are gonna be very long-lasting for you. Our hub and rotors and our mounting brackets on the backside here all a have a dacromet finish to them, so that is gonna offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating, and then our calipers are a stainless steel, so they are gonna be rustproof.
So, these are gonna be a great option for your salt water boat trailers, or trailers that are used in coastal areas, or on heavily treated roads that experience a lot of contact with salt. These are gonna hold up really well for you. Now, one caveat when you're upgrading to disc brakes, disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes. So, you are gonna need a hydraulic brake actuator, and brake lines that are rated for 1500 PSI or above in order to activate your brakes. So, those are sold separately.
If you don't already have them, we do have them available here at etrailer.com. So, this kit isn't going to give you everything that you need, but it is going to give you the two dacromet plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the five, pre-installed half inch diameter wheel bolts for each. You're also going to get the 10 and half inch zinc plated steel lug nuts to make sure that your wheels are securely attached. You're gonna get the two stainless steel caliper, and the two dacromet plated, ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. You can see these do have the four bolt brake flange configuration, so it's gonna be very easy to get these mounted on your axle, and now, keep in mind when you are mounting these, the brake assemblies are actually gonna be on the side. I just have them mounted on the top here for ease of demonstration to get them balanced for me, but you'll actually have them on the side, which is gonna have some benefits to it, taking the pressure off of areas you don't want the pressure to be on, and that sort of thing. So, make sure you're installing those properly, and then, of course, we are gonna have the stainless steel caliper mounting bolts to get those mounted in place. In addition to that, we are going to have our inner bearings and outer bearings. So, inner and outer there, and then we're also gonna have our inner and outer braces that those bearings will fit in. Those braces are pre-installed there, but you can see all those part numbers on the screen there if you need any of that information, and then this is going to be an oil set. So, we are going to get the two oil seals with the 1.72 inch inner diameter, and then the two oil caps with the 1.98 inch outer diameter, and an eight ounce bottle of your synthetic bearing oil here, so that you can keep everything well-lubricated inside. So, overall, great option here, especially, for your trailers that are gonna be experiencing a lot of salt, these are gonna hold up really well for you, and, of course, the disc brakes are gonna give you a much better breaking experience than you get with your drum breaks. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
