If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. And the KodaGuard coating on the calipers offers even better corrosion resistance, as it can withstand 500 to 600 hours of salt spray before rust forms. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 10 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes for superior performance. And this will work with your single 3,500 pound capacity axle with the 80 or number 84 spindles. And this rotor is a 10 inch diameter. It's got a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern.
So it is going to fit your wheel sizes from 13 inches and up. Upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance. It's also going to provide smoother and more controlled braking than with using your drum brakes. We do have ceramic brake pads here and so if I pull this apart, you'll be able to see that a little bit better. So our ceramic brake pads are going to help increase your stopping power.
And then inside there you can see we do have a large two and a quarter inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide a fast response while you're breaking. So it's going to do a great job for you, help keep your trailer pushing and pulling you as you're going down the road. This is going to require less maintenance than your drum breaks. Very little maintenance required with these. So it is going to help save you time and money.
You've got the one piece hub and rotor assembly that's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. This rotor is a vented design, so it is going to help dissipate the heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wearing. It is also going to have a high quality, automotive-grade construction, so it is gonna be very long lasting for you. Disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes, so you will need to have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for at least 1500 PSI to make sure that they will be able to activate your brakes properly. So that is not included.
We do sell hydraulic brake actuators and brake lines separately here at etrailer.com so you can find those so that you can get everything set up properly. This kit is going to include your two dichromate-plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies. These do have the five pre-installed half inch wheel bolts on each one so that you can get the, the wheels installed properly. These are also going to give you the two coatta guard coated cast iron calipers as well as the two decrement-plated duct tile iron caliper mounting brackets on the backside here. So if I turn this around you can see that a little bit better. So these mounting brackets do have a four bolt brake flange configuration. And then of course you're going to get the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts there. This kit is also going to include two inner bearings and two outer bearings. Those are part numbers that you see on the screen there. You're also going to get the two inner races and two outer races that are already pre-installed here but you can see those part numbers on the screen there as well. So you're also going to get two 1.72 inner diameter oil seals as well as two of these 1.98 outer diameter oil caps. You'll get one eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil and then the 10 half inch zinc-plated steel lug nuts that you need. So the dichromate, coatta guard, and zinc plating is going to help make these a great option for your boat trailers and trailers that are used in your coastal areas or in heavily treated roads where that salt is going to play a big factor on how long these will last. Now the coating here isn't going to make these last as long as your stainless steel options but they are quite a bit more affordable. Your stainless steel is going to last a little bit longer but it's quite a bit more expensive. So that dichromate finish on your hub and rotors, the brackets is going to offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating, then your coatta guard coating on the caliper is going to offer a 500 to 600 hour salt spray rating. As for even more rust and corrosion resistance. So like I said it is going to hold up really well for you, especially if you're gonna be in salt water or very salty environments. This will do a great job for you for years to come. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Would get 5 stars if the brakes came with covers for the caliper bolts came with covers like the ones I was replacing.
