Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers.

Axle arrived in perfect condition, was also an exact fit for my Top Hat Trailer.
Your staff was of great help finding my right axle.
I would recommend etrailer to everyone.

Axle is working out great. Easy to install, fit perfectly.

by:

Part was a great fit & delivery was on time and properly packaged.
Definitely recommend & I will use this company if future trailer parts are needed.

by:

I was pressed for time to deliver a car and this axle was advertised to be delivered on Tuesday. Then, tracking changed delivery to Wednesday. Still, it was timely enough, barely. The axle looked perfect except, there weren’t any spring perches! The axle was ordered with perches. I spoke with a delightful young lady, if that is not woke I don’t care. She remedied the situation, HOPEFULLY.

by:

The video was great after i had axle in place, would appreciate a little info with axle which way wires face if you need them, how is axle nut held in place.

by:

With Alex's assistance and knowledge of my trailer requirements, I installed two 3500 lb axles. These axles are superior to any others that I was shopping for, and with a combined GVW of 7,000 lbs my trailer is now suited for any medium sized load.

by:

I have been dealing with etrailer for years. They are great. I would give them five stars for their customer service. The Dexter axle is the reason for the four stars only issue I have with it is they don't use heavy enough wire through the axle for the brakes. The connections always burn through once they get hot. I end up running a piece of number 14 wire over the axle to connect the brakes

by:

Had an axle go out on one of my trailers during my busiest season, local dealers wanted way more for the axle and most didn’t have it in stock. They also wanted to charge me to measure it and weld spring brackets on. I found etrailer just by googling, called to ask a couple questions and sherry the representative answered everything perfectly and even took my order over the phone to speed up the process. She told me 3-4 days for delivery, maybe even until
Monday and by my complete surprise the axle was delivered in under 24 hours of me placing the order. I couldn’t be happier and definitely recommend etrailer!

by:

Does a wonderful job…great price…always shipped on time…can’t say enough about etrailer…

by:

Specs. matched exact to the broken axle and was easy to install. I was surprised that the axle was pre-wired although it was not replacement of the brake axle on my trailer. Hub fit nicely and trailer is now ready for the next haul job. Delivery was as promised.

The axle is performing very well after a year of use. Been on several long trips and have had no issues.

by:

Great service as always out of etrailer. I ordered 2 new axles for my car carrier, great specs on your webpage made for a perfect match. Items arrived in 3 days, heavily wrapped and will add that the end of the axles which could rust if not installed soon were covered in grease, a nice touch to insure no damage. Thanks as always for having a great source for all things trailers!...

Excellent customer service with Joshua

by:

Thanks again for a great product. Packaged well, arrived on time.

by: 08/17/2022

etrailer customer service for returns and their products as a whole are third rate at best. Every product arrives damaged from terrible packaging and handling by etrailer. Customer service sometimes responds and their return policy is garbage at best. buy elsewhere

by:

I'm very pleased with all of my purchases from eTrailer. Everything has seemed to be of excellent quality and value. The wiring kits and directions were very well thought out and one of the projects I completed would not have been possible had it not been for the excellent videos on the website.

I'm an eTrailer customer for life!

  • Replacement 3500-lb Trailer Axle for 2007 Spree by KZ Tandem Trailer
If your KZ Spree trailer's 3500-lb-rated axles are bent from damage or from overloading them beyond their weight capacity then they should be replaced. This will not only restore the trailer's handling but it will also prevent continued issues with uneven tire wear. Usually an axle that was bent from being overloaded will result in more wear on the inside edges of the tires. A new axle has a light upward bend that levels out under load. Our two 3500-lb-rated axles without hubs are displayed...

  • Difference Between Dexter 3,500 lb Trailer Axles, EZ Lube vs. non EZ Lube
Brake flanges on 3,500 lb axles are going to be the exact same between a Dexter axle and Lippert but sometimes the Al Ko options are different. I believe you are asking about the price difference between the Dexter 3,500 lb axles part # T3584F-8974 and # T3584F-EZ-8974 though which that comes down to the spindle style. The more expensive EZ lube spindle axle has a grease fitting on the end of it that allows you to easily pump grease into it whereas the other option does not and requires...

  • How to Determine if 89 inch 3,500 Dexter Axle # T3584F-EZ-8974 Will Work on Flat Bed Trailer
Since your spring seats are 74 inches apart on center the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 will bolt up easily. The hub face to hub face dimension is 89 inches like you mentioned. Basically this will be exactly where the tire's center will be. So you might measure between the tire centers to find out where the wheels would end up if you went with this axle. If you had two of these you'd have a 7k axle capacity. If that's adequate then this would work well. If you need more, or the dimensions mentioned...

  • How Much Grease to Pump into Trailer Hub Using EZ Lube Fitting
It is very easy to over fill trailer hubs with grease when using the EZ lube fitting which then blows out the grease seal and makes a big mess. It's actually best to grease by hand and not use the fitting at all to prevent that. But if you are going to it I would recommend just putting in enough that allows the outer bearing to move slightly as you pump it in.

  • What is Purpose of Bow in Trailer Axle
Basically all trailer axles have a slight bow to them when they are unloaded so I would be a little surprised if your current front axle didn't have the bow to it which would match the part Dexter 3,500 lb trailer axle # T3584F-EZ-8974 that you are planning on getting. With the weight of the trailer on the axle it will appear flatter. The bow is what allows the alignment of the wheels to be correct and wouldn't really cause a height difference if your current axle was totally flat.

  • Thickness of the 3,000 lbs Dexter Axle
The 2-3/8" Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles item # T3584F-EZ-8974 you were looking at will bend just as easily as any other axle if you go over it's capacity or damage it by hitting a curb or pothole at high speeds. User error bends axles not an 1/8" of thickness one way or the other. This axle has a 3,000 lbs capacity. An 89" hub-face-to-hub-face length and a 74" spring-center-to-spring-center length.

Since axles that have a 2-3/8" diameter are typically rated for 3,500 lbs, like the Dexter Axle # T3584F-EZ-8974, then 2 of them would put the weight capacity at 7,000 lbs so they will be able to handle a boat weighing in at 4,500 lbs as long as the boat trailer itself doesn't weigh over 2,500 lbs. There isn't a set dimension for that on trailers. Typically axles are custom ordered to the specs needed. For example, we have the 3,500 lb trailer axle part # T3584F-EZ-8974 which has 89 inches from hub face to hub face and then 74 inches from spring seat to spring seat.
