Kodiak Disc Brake Hub-and-Rotor

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This disc brake assembly resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat trailer. All KodaGuard calipers undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 600 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 600-hour salt spray rating indicates that this product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

In addition, the hub-and-rotor assemblies and caliper mounting brackets have a Dacromet plating, which offers a 300- to 400-hour salt spray rating. The pistons, the brake pad backings, and the caliper mounting bolts are made of rustproof stainless steel. These corrosion-resistant components make this Kodiak assembly a natural choice when installing disc brakes on your boat trailer.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies for Easy Installation

Retrofitting disc brakes or replacing drum brakes on your trailer is easy with this hub-and-rotor assembly. The hub and rotor are cast and machined as a single unit, with wheel studs pressed into the rotor. This 1-piece style of hub and rotor minimizes contamination - sometimes called runout - between rotor and hub surfaces to prevent warping. The result is excellent performance and long life. And because the hub and rotor are balanced together, you get a smoother ride.

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

So far I have had NO problems with this brake kit, I actually love it and wish I would have done this years ago, The brakes work way better than expected. I no longer have the big klunk before and after takeoff and stopping. I have highly recommended this product to anyone who has drum brakes it is well worth the money to invest in them and I hope they last for years to come.

Outstanding I would do it again without hesitation, best thing I ever did for the boat trailer. Well worth the price, took all my headache away. Love the produce

by:

This is a mixed review, I'd like to give a 1 star rating for ETRAILERs method of packing hubs and caliper mounting plates. The plates were loose in the box and apparently got sat on by the heavy hubs and subsequently bent the caliper mounting plate just enough to cause one side to drag on the rotor. I spent the entire day testing and troubleshooting a dragging brake only to find out that poor packing methods caused my problems.

I would give the Kodiak disc brake kit a 5 out of 5 for a nice beefy braking system that under normal circumstances would be installed in short order.

Came on time, fit properly, worked perf ectly!

by:

Kati, The Kodiak disk brake setup works great, was pretty straight forward to install, and all the parts required for the install were included in the package. I really love the control of the hydraulic breaks. couldn't be more happy.
Thanks for all your help, Jeff Boughton.

by:

The brake kit itself works great. The brakes work great once they start to apply. The problem with the electric over hydraulic system is they don't come on the minute you apply the brake pedal. It takes time for the electric pump to build up some pressure.

by:

Excellent support from Nicole in helping me confirm availability of all my material needs for my boat trailer brake upgrade from Drum to Disk. Have not actually done the install but parts arrived a day early and look to be high quality. The only slight bummer is that this set did not come with the caliper bracket mounting hardware. Not a big deal and will gather these locally. Thanks Nicole!!

Works great

by:

Disc Brake kit was simple to install, and works good.

by:

Great brakes. They really stop the trailer and truck.

by:

I usually use red pads, have bought at least 6 times. After awhile they eventually rust away. Will give these blue caliper and silver pads a try, maybe they will last at least as long!

by:

Great timing on shipping. Products were of great quality.

  • Recommended Disc Brakes and Brake Lines For Second Axle on 2013 Venture Boat Trailer
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs # K2HR35DKG will work fine on the second axle of your 2013 Venture boat trailer as long as the bearings and seal inner diameters match your spindles. This kit has the most standard sizes compatible with the vast majority of 3500 lb axles. The inner bearings are L68149 with inner diameter 1.378 inches. The outer bearings are L44649 with inner diameter 1.063 inches. The grease seal 10-19 has an inner diameter...

  • Correct Disc Brake Replacement for Titan 8-1/2 Drum Brakes
I do have an option for you but the L68149 and L44649 bearing combo will require larger 10" disc brakes, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2HR35DKG is what I recommend. It will work great to replace the Titan 5 on 4-1/2 Complete Hub-and-Drum Assembly part # T1544500042.

  • Will Using Separate Hub/Rotor Push the Wheels Out Further Compared to Combined Hub/Rotor 3,500 Axle
It is possible for the wheel to be pushed out further when using a separate hub and rotor as opposed to an integrated hub and rotor but there are a few factors at play so I do recommend matching the front and rear axle in regards to the type of hub. For a 3,500 lb axle you'll use part # K2R35D or part # K2HR35DKG for combined which also requires part # DBRKHW35EZ.

  • Recommended Disc Brake System for Salt Water Boat Trailer with Tandem Axles
To get the best braking power for your boat trailer you would want to have disc brakes on both axles. If you happen to be limited to one axle then you would want the rear outfitted. With a 5,000lb boat you likely have two 3,500lb torsion axles. The best finish for a salt water application is going to be stainless steel, next would be the KodaGuard and then Dacromet. In order to install the Kodiak 10" Rotor part # KR10S on a 3,500 lb axle you'll need the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K. This would then work just fine with the Kodiak 225 Calipers. That said, if you were only running idler hubs without brakes on the other axle there could indeed be an offset. I don't think this would cause an issue or really even be noticeable but you could use spacers as you mentioned but we do not offer these.
