Kodiak Disc Brake Hub-and-Rotor

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This disc brake assembly resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat trailer. All KodaGuard calipers undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 600 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 600-hour salt spray rating indicates that this product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

In addition, the hub-and-rotor assemblies and caliper mounting brackets have a Dacromet plating, which offers a 300- to 400-hour salt spray rating. The pistons, the brake pad backings, and the caliper mounting bolts are made of rustproof stainless steel. These corrosion-resistant components make this Kodiak assembly a natural choice when installing disc brakes on your boat trailer.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies for Easy Installation

Retrofitting disc brakes or replacing drum brakes on your trailer is easy with this hub-and-rotor assembly. The hub and rotor are cast and machined as a single unit, with wheel studs pressed into the rotor. This 1-piece style of hub and rotor minimizes contamination - sometimes called runout - between rotor and hub surfaces to prevent warping. The result is excellent performance and long life. And because the hub and rotor are balanced together, you get a smoother ride.

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

The first picture is similar to
how the other three wheels looked.
Great products -converted from drum to hub-disk. Used Buddy Bearing Seal kit on scored spindles and rebuilt the old Buddy bearings (all four). Re-built Titan 10 Actuator, w/new dampners and reservoir w/fitting for disk brakes to increase pressure. Replaced steel brake lines with rubber, to reduce condensation inside the lines.
The stopping power is unbelievable!!

Total GVWR loaded is about 8,500lbs plus. Tow with a 2010 Ford HD 6.6L Diesel.
Mostly salt water use.

Would recommend Kodiak parts and etrailer to anyone who can and enjoys doing their own work.

Thank you for making it easy...

the install was easy and they are holding up just fine. Not used many times but so far all is good.

by:

Bought new axel parts and brakes bigger wheels for my boat trailer. My existing axel was 20 years old and never was adequate for the weight it hauled causing wheel bearings to wear out and the chance of loosing a wheel. This was the most economical way to repair as a new trailer was so expensive. All the parts I needed were available and went together beautifully. Very happy with etrailer, this is not the first time I have ordered from them great option for any parts you need.

by:

A amssive improvement over the drum brakes that came on the trailer.

by:

item is as described and worked perfect ly

by:

Overall very happy with the service and communication through the process. Have not installed the product yet so don’t know how it will perform but it came as described.

by:

Excellent company to deal with. Processed and shipped my order very quickly. I would buy from this company again.

by:

Everything came as advertised, but a couple items shifted and damaged a couple boxes. The items inside those boxes were not damaged however. Maybe needed more padding inside the box. The only reason it gets a 4 star.

See what our Experts say about this Kodiak Accessories and Parts

  • Will Kodiak Hubs/Rotors Work With UFP Calipers
In regards to disc trailer brakes, we don't recommend mixing brands like using Kodiak rotors with Dexter/UFP calipers etc. The UFP stuff is mostly discontinued so best option would be to upgrade to the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2HR526DKG which is a complete kit that comes with rotors, hub, and calipers.

  • What Trailer Setups will the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526DKG Fit
In order to determine if the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526DKG would be the correct kit for your trailer we will need to know a few things about your trailer. First off, your trailer will need to be a 5,200-6,000 lb axle with number 42 spindles, and your wheels will need to have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. Your axle capacity will be listed on the plate or sticker near the coupler of your trailer on the frame. To determine what spindles you have you will need to remove your current hubs...

  • How to Determine if 10 inch or 12 inch Stainless Disc Brake Kit is Needed for Trailer Axle
To determine what disc brake kit you'd need for your trailer is based on the axle capacity of the trailer and the wheel bolt pattern. With that info we can easily pick out what you'd need. The 10 inch rotor designs like the part # K2HR35DS are for 3,500 lb axles with 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt patterns. 12 inch rotors like the part # K2HR526DKG are for 5,200 to 7,000 lb axles typically.

When it comes to building an off road camper trailer, the best configuration that I can come up with is using the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension, # ASR35HDS02, with the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, # K2HR526DKG. The heavy-duty steel construction and black powder coat finish of the axle-less system resists wear and corrosion and the rust-resistant, marine-grade, disc brake kit would be perfect for your set-up since you mention the fact of them going under water/mud on a regular basis.
