When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

EZ-Latch Coupler

Cast Coupler Cutaway

This coupler features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco EZ-Latch in Use

The contoured, low-profile design of the latch handle helps protect the coupler from damage by allowing any potential hazards - from debris on the road to your ball mount backing into the coupler - to simply slide over the top. This helps prevent anything from getting under the latch handle and releasing the ball, and it can also limit any damage to the coupler should an impact occur

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 120-hour salt spray rating. In addition, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability.

this is the best product it's so easy to use!just lower the hitch and it locks in and is also easy to unhitch, no binding. I would highly recommend this actuator.

by:

Best brake actuator I have ever used. Had issues with my brake line fitting up to the actuator and George J helped me trouble shoot the problem and got it resolved in no time. Best price, best product and superior support staff. I would not hesitate to purchase any product from them at all and will definitely use them in the future for all my trailer needs.

After using this product for a year I will have to say it is still the best product I’ve ever used. I would recommend using it for your own personal use.

by:

This actuator works great with the brakes and love the easy “click” hookup. Would highly recommended

This actuator works great! Really easy to connect and disconnect it. I highly putting this on your boat trailer.

by:

The whole staff at etrailer bent over backwards to make sure I was satisfied with the installation of brakes on my trailer. Have made several purchases from them always satisfied with parts and service. Special credit to Jamie great to deal with. Answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable.

by:

Nice replacement for old out of date surge coupler. Fast shipping, and everything seems to work like it should. Wish that etrailer would include the factory Demco install manual, but was able to find it on the web.

by:

After spending a long time on the phone with etrailer sending Pictures, they told me this is what I needed. Well Ordered and didn't have time right away to install, since it was snowing. This wasn't even close. Wasted couple hundert bucks on the wrong part.

by:

I recently replaced my old actuator. Price and delivery was very good. after the install we went to bleed the brakes and the master cylinder was defective. Called Demco and they immediately knew the issue because they have been having problems. They shipped a replacement master cylinder to be installed by us. Good customer service by Demco but caused labor costs to be more than double original estimate.

by:

I received the actuator and unfortunately the master cylinder appears to be defective and I could not get it to pump any fluid at all. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with the install (although we're dealing with simple physics)and called etrailers but they had nothing to add. To etrailers credit, they are to send me another unit via express tomorrow (no shipments on Sunday). Will post an update on the new unit.

by:

The videos really helped convince me the Demco was the one to buy. Came on time. Is exactly what I expected. Nice hitch. MUCH better design than the old actuator hitch, which had become disfunctional.

by:

Product was exactly as advertised. Shipping date kept getting pushed back and the item arrived much later than anticipated.

by:

Hit brakes trailer stops. That's what I want it to do and that's what it does.

by:

Excellent replacement for my 2008 EZ Loader trailer

by:

Excellent support from Nicole in helping me confirm availability of all my material needs for my boat trailer brake upgrade from Drum to Disk. Have not actually done the install but parts arrived a day early and look to be high quality. This actuator is a perfect fit to replace my old drum brake surge actuator. Thanks Nicole!!

by:

It was delivered very quickly and on my doorstep. I bought this to put on a Tow Dolly I purchased to pull my car behind my motorhome. The surge brake will make it much safer going through the mountains on my way south. I also feel the price was great.

by:

I guess I didn’t read enough, I wanted an actuator that did both drum and disc. Now just ordered a disc brake kit which is what I wanted just not now, but I know I’m better off that it’ll be done all at once.

by:

SO far so good the unit showed up very quickly and I like the self locking unit. It should have keeper pin included with it other than that I like the design.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Great online documentation. Speedy delivery

by:

Excellent quality. I had to drill an extra hole for mounting, no problem. No manual for bleeding or parts breakdown was included so I downloaded the manual from Demco website.

by:

This actuator has great features at an exceptional price. Also, it's proudly made in the USA!

by:

Easy to install works great fast shipping thanks!

by:

Excellent service as usual. The part was on backorder just like everything else. They were in constantly in contact keeping me updated. Hopefully I'll get to install it after the holiday.

by:

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778
The replacement I recommend for an Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778 is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR. It has the same ball size, offers a bolt-on install, and has a greater capacity. The only difference is it has an electric lockout as opposed to a manual one.

  • Replacement Surge Brake Actuator For Atwood 61101
Atwood is no longer in business, which means replacement parts are unfortunately no longer available for your Atwood 61101 surge brake actuator. The best option available if yours is no longer working is to replace the actuator, which you can do with either of the following models, depending on if you have drum brakes or disc brakes. - Drum Brakes: Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR - Disc Brakes: Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR Both of these actuators are bolt-on options...

  • Trailer Coupler to Replace Atwood 61101
The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR will be a good replacement for your Atwood 61101. This is a surge actuator that is compatible with drum brakes. For a similar option designed for disc brakes you'd want the part # DM62VR.

  • Actuator/Coupler Replacement for 85841 on Sea Ray Boat Trailer
Since your trailer has disc brake it will be very important that you pick out a actuator/coupler that is rated for that and not drum brakes as that is a lower pressure rating that won't work well. The 85841 is no longer made so it would be tough to find so I would recommend going with a new coupler setup like the # DM62VR which you could bolt onto your frame once you cut off the older welded on model. If you wanted to weld this in place of what you have you certainly could do that as well.

Thank you for the photos! To replace your Atwood 85738 actuator I recommend checking out the Demco 7K actuator which comes configured for Drum Brakes # DM72VR as well as Disc Brakes # DM62VR and a 2" hitch ball. This system is a bolt on installation but an experienced welder would be able to cut off your current actuator and weld either one of these on in it's place.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Brakes For 6,000LB Boat Trailer Axle
You can install electric brakes on a boat trailer but it is not recommended to use the electric brakes when they get submerged in the water. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-D has a Dacromet coating for superior corrosion resistance due to being submerged in water. Minus the packaging, the Demco # DM62VR Hydraulic Brake Actuating Coupler weighs about 18 lbs. The coupler is compatible with trailers weighing up to 7000 lbs with disc brakes. The coupler fits a 2 inch trailer ball, and is equipped with an electric lockout solenoid that will prevent the brakes from engaging when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse, assuming that the coupler is installed correctly and the center pin of the 7-way on the tow vehicle is tied into the reverse lamp circuit. • Can a Surge Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes Be Compatible with Disc Brakes?
Most brake actuators for drum brakes like your Dico 6000 lb cannot be used for disc brakes. This isn't based on weight capacity, but rather based on the pressure the master cylinder can handle. Most drum brake systems give you 1000 to 1200 psi, and disc brake systems require more with most rated at 1600 psi. The actuators are specific for disc or drum because drum brakes with a disc brake actuator would give too much pressure and in your case, the drum brake actuator will not give enough...

I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR.This has a 7,000 lb capacity which is slightly higher than your A60 and fits a 2" ball. It also features the E-Z latch coupler that lets you drop the coupler over the ball to snap in place. The electric lockout will allow you to back up without getting out of your truck.
