Adding Hydraulic Surge Brakes To a Demco Tow Dolly
Question:
Hi, I have an older Demco Steerable Tow Dolly. This was not equipped with a braking system. I am looking to install hydraulic surge brakes. Do you have a kit or individual parts available for this? I have numbers from Demco SB24429 Left side and SB24428 Right side with SB40929 Brake Drums. Can you tell me any pricing and availability for this? Thank you

Rather than installing hydraulic drum brakes you should look at a Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R35D for your tow dolly. That is the style the new Demco Kar Kaddy X Tow Dolly # DM9713093 uses as it would make for a much better setup that will be easier to install.
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R35D will allow you to slide the rotor over the existing idler hub. The brackets for the caliper will bolt to the brake mounting flange. You will need to ensure that you have this type of flange on your tow dolly otherwise you may not be able to add any brakes to the system.
The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR will mount to a 3" Wide trailer tongue and features an electric lockout that will allow you to reverse with the tow dolly and not activate the brakes. To connect the calipers to the brake actuator you will need a Demco Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # DM5424. This kit will need to be trimmed down and the brake line flared to install correctly. You can find these tools at most local automotive parts stores as a rental tool.
You will want to confirm with your tow dolly to ensure that you do have the 3" wide tongue for mounting the actuator as well as the brake flange on the hubs to be able to mount the brakes to before going to far. If you do not feel comfortable performing this type of installation you should contact a local trailer facility in your area to perform the inspection and installation.
