Recommended Electric Trailer Brakes For 6,000LB Boat Trailer Axle

Question:

Are electric breaks ok to install on boat trailers where they will get wet? For connected wires I can use water proof glue shrink wrap glue connections. But is the rest of it waterproof? I have a 6000lb hydronic system right now. If so, which electric breaks can I use that are water proof?

You can install electric brakes on a boat trailer but it is not recommended to use the electric brakes when they get submerged in the water. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-D has a Dacromet coating for superior corrosion resistance due to being submerged in water. If this is the route you choose you will need to ensure your hub is okay to use with electric brakes. Or we have the Galvanized Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-G-EZ-K.

The best route would be to upgrade to a Stainless Steel Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R526S. This uses stainless steel rotors and calipers for the best water resistance. You will need a Stainless Steel Hub # KH42655S and the Inner Bearing # 25580, Outer Bearing # 15123 and either the 2.25" Grease Seal # GS-2250DL or 2.125" Grease Seal # GS-2125DL.

Then you can add the Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes # HS481-8067 to have electric over hydraulic brakes. With the electrical portion of the brakes being above water you would be able to use these brakes when the trailer is submerged. Or you will be able to add the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc # DM62VR.
