When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Today we're going to take a look at the Titan zinc-plated disc brake actuator with the lockout shield. This one is a multi-fit ball design, has a 7,000-pound weight capacity. This hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration will occur and the momentum will push your trailer towards the rear of your vehicle. With the surge brake system, the actuator right here is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator is mounted on the trailer tongue of your trailer and it'll telescope right in here and apply force to the master cylinder, which is underneath right in here, which in turn will supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes. This one is a multi-fit ball design, it's easily adjustable to fit different ball sizes. It'll fit a one and seven-eights inch diameter hitch ball, two inch, and even the 50 millimeter hitch balls. Basically, just by turning this hand wheel, you can tighten the coupler around the ball.
All you have to do is push that lever down to unlock it, and you can see you can just turn it or tighten it, whichever way you need to go. Once you get it on your ball and tightened correctly, then you just leave the lever go and it will lock that hand wheel into place. This actuator does have this built-in solenoid shield for solenoid applications. If you happen to use a reverse backup solenoid that installs at the back of the master cylinder, this cover would be used to protect it from any damage. This also comes with a breakaway kit. Your breakaway kit would be this lever with this cable and this carabiner hook on this end.
What the breakaway kit does is this carabiner hook would attach to your tow vehicle, and the cable is attached to this lever. What happens is if in the case of if your trailer ever becomes detached from your two vehicle, it would pull on this cable, which would actuate the lever and that will actuate the master cylinder underneath here, which would apply the brakes to that runaway trailer. This actuator does have a nice zinc plating to help provide corrosion resistance. It is a durable steel construction. This is a bolt-on installation. If you notice, there's two bolt holes on each side here.
The bolt holes are three inches apart, center-to-center. This part is made in the USA. A few specs on this, the application: This is for a disc brakes, on your trailer. Again, the ball size it fits is a one and seven-eights inch diameter, two inch or a 50 millimeter. It is designed to mount on a three-inch wide channel tongue. Weight capacity on this is 7,000 pounds, and the maximum tongue weight is 700 pounds. That should do it for the review on the Titan zinc-plated disc brake actuator with the lockout shield, and this is a multi-fit ball design, and has a 7,000 pound weight capacity..

I placed the order for a coupler with Bill, shortly I received a notice that the item would be delivered before 8 pm on Wednesday. At a little before 8pm on Wednesday evening the item was at our door.
I only replaced the old unit because the trailer had been in storage for over 10 years and the unit had dried out and the lines were a mess. We were taking the boat over 400 miles and I wanted to be on the safe side.
This product has been great. I installed it about 1 1/2 years ago and it works well. The nice thing about is that it can be used on a range of ball sizes. The only thing is that I need to remember to tighten it up onto the ball (when I leave my home) and check it again before leaving the boat launch (just to make sure nobody loosened it while I was away fishing).
Brakes work great, had to get additional parts from the auto parts store to make the braked more serviceable in the future.
