When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

eZ-Latch Coupler

The coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the eZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic.

Demco eZ-Latch in Use

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 200-hour salt spray rating. Even the master cylinder is made of rustproof aluminum to further ensure durability.

I didn't give all five stars because Demco has changed the design of the master cylinder, again! My first hitch from 2009 had a cast iron (I think) master cylinder casting which was very strong. Then they went to cast aluminum when the original was replaced in 2018. When I lost brake fluid during two different trips to the lake because of broken brake lines, it resulted in not handling the pounding when the hitch retracted on braking and the master cylinder cracked. The first two hitch attachments of the master cylinder to the underside of the hitch was via "blind" hole drillings and threaded so that it wasn't exposed to the brake fluid reservoir. This most recent design now has attachment holes drilled all the way through (probably to decrease production costs) and a rubber seal that mates up to the underside of the hitch. The bolts were coated with a sealant but I had to remove two of them to facilitate using my pressure bleeder thus causing the brake fluid to weep out until having to reseal them with silicone seal. I wish they had kept the blind hole drillings and cast iron instead of counting on thread sealant and a rubber gasket...!!!

I actually ordered the wrong actuator and when I made the dreaded phone call the service I received was astounding the correct one was sent asap and a return label emailed as we spoke great company thank you for making my screw up so painless

by:

Arrived fast and fit perfectly. My go to parts store.

by:

Prior to ordering, I was concerned about the length of the brake. Length end to end was provided, but I would have liked mounting area length (8 1/4"), and length behind the mounting (~11 1/4"). Communication was great and they kept me informed.

I really like this hitch. Even when there is a lot of pressure on the hitch, I have no problem getting it off the ball. With the old hitch it would typically be a struggle to get disconnected.

Item arrived ahead of schedule and in flawless condition. Thank you for your excellent customer service. I will definitely be a returning customer when the need arises. 5 stars in all aspects of this purchase from placing order to delivery. Thanks again etrailer team!

by:

The actuator itself has been operating flawlessly but as previously documented via emails, the backup solenoid failed on the first usage (i.e., wouldn't release the brake fluid pressure when energized). I had to swap out my old solenoid and reuse it so that the actuator was fully functional. It seems that cheaper solenoids are prone to failure and are being installed on new actuators. I disassembled the failed solenoid, connected the solenoid to a 12.5 VDC power source, and found that the electromagnet wasn't strong enough to lift the valve plunger upon energizing when pressurized by brake fluid. I would suggest that the purchasing department return back to the older style, more reliable solenoids. That is why I only gave three stars on this review.

by:

Got it quicker than expected, appreciate the delivery notification!!

by:

Experience with Etrailer was great. They sent the part that I ordered and it was not damaged which was a plus. The actuator has been working great since then. I hope to get several years of service from this actuator without any issues.
Thank you Etrailer!

The brake actuator works as it should. The mounting points matched up perfectly with the old original unit.

by:

Bolted right up exactly like the old one, bled the brakes, hooked up 2 wires save time & $ compared to the original one which was b/o till November. Just haven't found a place to grease it yet

by:

The break actuator works great and install was easy , after a year on my boat trailer no problems.

by:

Great product but FYI, it is not a direct replacement for the comparable TITAN actuator.
Your brake line may be a few inches too short as mine was.
Super fast shipping!

by:

Very fast shipping. Good price and sales help! Thanks

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Older Boat Trailer
Thanks so much for the info as well as the photo, but I took a look and there are no replacement parts for the master cylinder and shock you mentioned, which means the best option is going to be a brand new hydraulic brake actuator. To get the correct actuator you simply need to know if you have hydraulic drum brakes or disc brakes, the GVWR of your trailer, what size hitch ball the coupler needs to accept, and how it needs to mount. For example, if you had hydraulic drum brakes you...

The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w Drop and Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2-5/16" Ball - 12.5K # DM8104311 will work well as a replacement for your trailer as long as the capacity of the trailer is not greater than 12,500 lbs. My research showed that part rated for 16,500 lbs, so if you need a larger capacity coupler I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w Drop and Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2-5/16" Ball - 16K # DM8164311 or the 20K # T4750520. • What Info is Needed to Pick Out Surge Disc Brake Kit for Trailer
If I know what axle capacity your trailer needs and if the trailer has a pole tongue or an a-frame design I can get you set up with everything. But just to check did you mean 12,500 psi from the actuator or 12,500 lb axles? 12.5k psi would be too low for disc brakes as they require higher pressure of 1,600 psi. For example the Kodiak disc brake kit part # KSR35DKG is for a 3,500 lb axle so for an actuator you could use the part # DM8104311 and for a single axle line kit part # 18SI-BLKIT.

  • How to Manually Lockout Brake Actuator With Electric Lockout
You could run a bolt through the # DM8104311 to manually lock it out if the solenoid fails. However, there is no spot on the actuator to do this so it would require drilling. A Replacement solenoid # DM11993 is also available. The hole would require a 1/4" pin. We don't have a regular pin but you could use the # e98887 which would hold it in place and deter theft.
