Can a Surge Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes Be Compatible with Disc Brakes?

Question:

Can a Dico 6000 lb drum brake actuator be used when converting drum brakes to disk brakes. Thanks

Most brake actuators for drum brakes like your Dico 6000 lb cannot be used for disc brakes. This isn't based on weight capacity, but rather based on the pressure the master cylinder can handle. Most drum brake systems give you 1000 to 1200 psi, and disc brake systems require more with most rated at 1600 psi. The actuators are specific for disc or drum because drum brakes with a disc brake actuator would give too much pressure and in your case, the drum brake actuator will not give enough pressure for your disc brake conversion.

I've linked the page to your options for disc brake actuators for a 7,000 lb trailer. These will all work well for you, but the closest to your current actuator is probably the Demco # DM62VR.
