Video Transcript for Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II Review

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.

We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.

This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.

You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.

Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter - BX88312

Tighten up your connection. This hitch receiver immobilizer keeps your 2" hitch adapter or reducer from rattling and shifting while you're on the road.

This device does not fit my factory 2016 Ram 3500 hitch. The 2 inch U-bolt that is supposed to hold the reducer in place will not fit around the 2.5 inch adaptor. These are factory parts and your site states it will fit. I believe I need a 2.5 inch U-bolt to hold the reducer in place. IT will not work as advertised as the reducer is too thick to allow access to the device to grab ahold of the 2-inch hitch alone.

Hmm...let me ask a few questions to start. Is hitch a three inch and the adapter is two and a half inch? Or is the adapter two inches wide and the hitch is two and a half?

by:

I believe this anti-rattle clamp will eventually work. However, there are clearance issues between the gusset on the drawbar. Can you provide me contact information for Blue Ox for me? The one drawbar is from a Blue Ox load leveling hitch for our Travel Trailer. I would like to ask them some questions on what I should do. Send that to my email address.

Flange around the hitch for a 2017 Chevy 2500 prevents the device from fitting.

Do you by any chance have pictures of the hitch? The only thing I can think of, is if the receiver has those ears or wings that help hold the harness and allow for safety chains.

Very easy to install, but it wasn't up to the task of eliminating slop with a weight distribution hitch. I'm sure it would work fine for a standard hitch with some minor play, but don't expect it to fix major play with a WDH. The forces were just too much for it to handle and the U bolts were bent up after a couple uses.

by:

No more rattle and sloppy fit. Easy to install. Be sure to check tension on the nuts while using. It can loosen up with use. Glad I bought it.

I still use this product every time I use my 2.5 hitch. It does exactly what it was designed to do! I am still happy I bought it.

by:

Install was super easy. Fingers crossed it works better than the other one I tried!

by:

Great product! If I would have known earlier about this item I would have purchased it earlier. Stiffens my tow bar. I have two of these on my Blue Ox Aventia tow bar, one at the received on the hitch and one on the tow bar itself where it attaches to the riser. Highly recommend this item

Well on one of the hitch tightners the welds broke on the little tabs. So my review seems to have been somewhat premature. Not very good quality control, good idea if it worked properly.

by:

Installed the immobilizer and seems to firm up the hitch with the receiver. Will have more input after a trip tomorrow. Service from etrailer was great as usual!

by:

Wow, made that wobbly hitch tight! After years of rattling in the back, I'm a happy camper. Only "hitch" with the setup is if your adapter sleeve sticks out from the receiver, the Immobilizer won't fit on. Fortunately I could turn the sleeve around and it didn't stick out - otherwise I would have had to cut the sleeve shorter.

by:

I use this on a 2018 GMC 2500 Sierra. Usally tow a 6000# travel trailer I got this because my receiver was showing signs of wallowing out the pin holes. In 2500+ miles of towing I have not measured any additional wear since first use. have to check it occasionally for loosening. Carry extra nuts as the lock nuts will wear down with frequent install/uninstall A bit of a hassle switching out blue-ox WD hitch for a regular hitch to tow a smaller trailer. Works for me. I bought a spare just in case…You know. Would like to be able to buy extra u-bolts for spares. The lock nuts will also eat away at the main part. Leading me to believe the whole thing is disposable at some point. Does what is expected.

by:

Works as advertised. Elininates hitch n oise.

Didn’t fit my Blue Ox set-up. Can’t return it seemingly.

I want to see what is going on with the Immobilizer. What are you using it with? Would you be able to send a picture?

by:

Works perfectly, no play in connection.

by:

I use this for my mountain bike hitch rack. When you have a 8k mountain bike I wanted to make sure my bike would be as secure as possible. This blue ox hitch adapter gives me peace of mind while traveling long road trips or of terrain roads. I would highly recommend this product.

by:

Great product, keeps my bike rack from jumping around on my truck and on the back of my travel trailer and also keeps my travel trailer hitch from moving too much due to the 2" hitch in a 2 1/2" receiver with reducer.

by:

Ordered this product to stop hitch rattle while towing a Ford F350srw behind a motor home. Product arrived on time and in good condition. Easy to install but did not work. On the first use, the anti-rattle steel bracket bent. This product could not handle the weight of the F350srw. Wasted my money.

by:

Easy to install, and Blue Ox was there to answer my questions, because I have an unusual setup. Pulling my Airstream trailer with a Blue Ox hitch had a little play that was noticeable when breaking. This product was recommended by a friend, so I decided to try it out. More to come as I go down the road.

by:

Haven't used it yet. Came in yesterday. We will see how it works, the Blue Ox probably needs to be re-designed. On the 2016 Ram 2500 with the 2 1/2" receiver and 2" adapter it comes with, you can only use one of the u-bolts on it, there is no clearance or room to install the u-bolt that is closes to the receiver hitch. It seemed to tighten everything down and no play in the tow bar, but not sure if the single u-bolt will hold up towing a trailer when I take it out. The locking device needs about another inch or so in width to use both u-bolts.

by:

I like the concept and it has eliminated the movement. Will see how it holds up. Note one does need to remove it, if you want to take your draw bar off. No washers provided. No torque specs provided.

by:

I gave the product 5 stars because it appears to be a solid, well built product. However, I will be returning it because it WILL NOT fit a Ram 2500 class V hitch with 2" adapter. First of all the plate is too short to clamp over the lip of the receiver and allow enough room for both of the U bolts to slide over a 2" accessory. And second, the safety chain mounts get in the way of the plate being able to slide all the way over the hitch. It just needs to be redesigned to fit all models of vehicles with class V hitches. Until then, I will keep looking for the right solution.

  • Anti-Rattle Device Recommendation for Towing and Bike Racks
I have two favorites when it comes to anti-rattle devices. The first is the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches part # RM-061 the other is the Curt Anti-Rattle Kit for 2" Trailer Hitches part # C22321. The Blue Ox Part # BX88312 is one that works good as well but the size limits it's ability to work in some situations. Either the Curt or roadmaster will work really well for your ball mount and eliminate most all play you experience. I would go with the Roadmaster but it does...

  • Best Anti-Rattle Device For Towing a Trailer Using a 2-1/2 Receiver to 2" Hitch Adapter
The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III # BX88312 is going to be the best way to eliminate rattle and play from your 2-1/2" receiver with the 2" adapter. This device uses 2 U-Bolts around the hitch to pull it tight into the corner of the receiver tube. It has also been rated for use while towing as often times cheaper anti-rattles are only to be used on hitch mounted accessories.

  • Will BOLT Hitch Locks Cause Wear on Hitch Pin Hole
BOLT does not have a version of their hitch locks that has a straight end. That's interesting that yours is rounding out the hitch pin's hole. There really shouldn't be enough friction between the hitch pin and the hitch pin hole to cause that type of wear. In general the hitch pin does not actually bear any of weight of the trailer since the tongue weight pins the ball mount into the hitch so well that no movement is allowed. To reduce movement which would cause potential wear an immobilizer...

  • Will Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III Fit on 2016 Ford F250 Factory Trailer Hitch Receiver
The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III # BX88312 is a universal fit and we haven't had the opportunity to test it on a 2016 Ford F-250 factory trailer hitch so I can't verify how well it will fit on your truck. The same goes for a 9000 pound trailer since it doesn't actually carry a weight capacity rating. However, the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II # BX88225 has reviews of customers reporting it worked very well with their trailers weighing 7000 pounds.

  • Compatibility of Anti-Rattle Device with Weight Distribution and 2-1/2 Inch to 2 Inch Reducer Sleeve
You can use an anti-rattle to reduce the movement and noise in your trailer hitch. The best option is the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter # BX88312 because it is designed for that precise purpose and limits both vertical and horizontal movement. You can use the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-062 which will help secure the shank in your receiver. This will help with either the vertical or horizontal movement but not both. It will improve the stability...

The usable length of the bolt is right at 3-1/4 inches, or just at 3 inches if the lock washer is used. The Curt # C22321 isn't designed for a 2-1/2 inch receiver, so I'd recommend another option like # BX88312, which is actually designed specifically for a 2 inch reducer used in a a 2-1/2 inch receiver. I've linked you to a product description video.

For this, I recommend using the Gen-Y Anti-Rattle Clamp part # 325-GH-063 between the receiver tube and sleeve and the Gen-Y Anti-Rattle Clamp part # GY88XR between the sleeve and ball mount. You are not going to loose any weight capacity with this reducer sleeve. There is no problem using a 2-1/2" to 2" Receiver Reducer Sleeve # e26YR with a weight distribution hitch. This way you will not need to replace your Shank # C17132 unless you have a significantly taller receiver on your new 3/4 ton truck.
