We were looking for a solution to haul our utv when pulling our camper. This extender allowed us to leave the tailgate down and still have enough clearance to not damage the tailgate. Downside--this extender amplifies the amount of movement with the hitch. This is more than a simple hitch clamp could fix. I added several modifications to completely eliminate the hitch movement. We have taken several trips since the installation and no issues with pulling the trailer. We did have to extend the safety chains about 4 links. Overall a good product and it accomplished the goal. As always, etrailer personnel are knowledgeable, easy to deal with and have quick shipments.

The hitch extender is working well for us. We just finished our second season of camping with no issues.

@JonW We're glad to hear that! Keep in mind that using the reducer/extender will lower the weight capacity of your hitch by 1/3.

by:

My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns.

The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others.

by:

Reducer/extender was thrown into a box ,no padding. Broke through box during delivery. Luckily my postal carrier put 2 and 2 together and I got it. Pretty disappointing from etrailer.

by:

Fast delivery, solid gear. This is not only a 7" extension, but an adapter from 2 1/2" to 2" receiver to use equipment that I already have such as bike carrier and vise insert. Works great! I opted for the heavier version (why not) in case I needed to tow a small trailer. As always, very pleased with etrailer and their support.

by:

Lowed me to keep the tail gate down and pull my travel trailer behind without buying a very expensive system

by:

Works great when used with anti rattle hitch locks for my carry on hitch basket and my Saris bike rack. Would definitely recommend. Allows me to drop my tailgate with the bikes on the tack.

by:

I purchased this to use on my 2500HD to transition from the factory 2.5" receiver to a 2" so that we could use a Yakima hitch mounted bike rack. With the length of the tube, it also provides the perfect amount of clearance from the back of the truck so that I can lower the tailgate without it hitting the upright on the bike rack. Great product and always pleased with etrailer's customer service!

by:

Great product. Exactly what I needed. Hard to find anywhere else. Have used it a lot for a year now and it has worked perfectly.

by:

Works as it should and I didn't have to turn my power jack on my camper 90 degrees to miss the tailgate when it is lowered!!

by:

Bought this to extend my bike rack away from the truck camper door. Added a anti rattle clamp and yhe setup has been perfect.

by:

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product.

by:

got this to accommodate the Tule bike rack in my 1 ton truck. I haven't used it yet but looks shiny.

by:

Product is very high quality. There was a small shipping delay, but etrailer was excellent at keeping me informed of the delay and when to expect product. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Excellent

Working with etrailer.com was great. I worked with Madison and she was knowledgable, professional and very helpful. Got what I needed and it was delivered earlier than expected! I highly recommend etrailer.com!

by:

Worked as advertised. Did a great job over the last year.

by:

Works great!

by:

Quality extension, keeps tailgate from hitting trailers jack stand.

by:

Not really much to talk about. I needed it so that I was able to open my tailgate with my trailer attached. I pull a 7,000 pound trailer. It does exactly what I need it to do.

by:

This product works well as expected. The shipping service I recieved however, was not good. I was promised delivery prior to the time I needed it, but it came too late and I had to purchase another one locally, with a lot of running around to find something in time.

by:

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains.

Great!Great!

by:

2.5" hitches are great, except that every single accessory aside from your heavy duty hitch doesn't fit.

I had a shockingly difficult time finding an adapter that wasn't total garbage. I tried several. This was key to my problem, and it gave me a little bit of extra room too!

by:

Works well with the compressor.

by:

I have a bike rack that has a 2" sleeve. My hitch is 2'1/2". The hitch pin placement on the rack would not work with an adapter sleeve that I purchased locally. The length of this adapter sleeve allows me to use the rack on my truck, but adds the advantage of mounting the rack away from the bumper so I can drop the tailgate with that rack attached to the hitch.

by:

the receiver was good quality and the road master did alao. No Vibration at all

by:

All I received was an empty box with a hole in the side. Customer service was very helpful and promised to send a replacement.

  • Availability of Longer Weight Distribution Shank so Tailgate Can Fully Open
Using the # HR26 with a weight distribution kit isn't recommended because the extender will lower the hitch tongue weight capacity by one third, so I wouldn't advise using an extender. A weight distribution system exerts huge amounts of leverage to raise the front and lower the front of the tow vehicle. An extender would provide a weak link in the chain that could lead to an unsafe situation. You didn't mention how much additional length you need or the specific drop you needed, but the...

  • How Can I Get More Clearance Between My Hitch and Trailer Coupler?
I had a couple of our couplers measured, but the Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch - 2-5/16" Ball - Adjustable Channel - 14,000 lbs # BDA256C0317 ended up being the longest one we currently carry. We do have the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long # HR26, but the use of extenders like this will reduce your tongue weight, up to 1/3 in this case. If you need something longer, you could also go with the Brophy Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches...

  • Parts Needed To Tow Trailer With Tailgate Down on 2019 Ram 2500
The Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender part # HR26 may work to allow you to travel with the tailgate down however it is enough extension to travel with the tailgate down and tow a trailer without interference. This adapter option also cuts the tongue weight of your hitch by one third. I recommend using an extra long Brophy Ball Mount # EA40 which measures 14-5/8". I recommend measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole on your truck out 14-35/8" to make sure it clears the lowered tailgate...

I have a solution but I reached out to Thule to check and found out that Thule does not make a threaded hitch pin that will work with your 2 1/2inch receiver. They also mentioned that use of an adapter or extender would void the warranty on your Thule Doubletrack. Using the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long # HR26 would allow you to use a standard hitch pin and clip like Tow Ready Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-1/2" Hitches # TR63253 to secure...

  • Can Brophy 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Hitch Reducer and Extender be Used with Weight Distribution
Brophy hitch extender and reducer # HR26 is indeed rated for use with weight distribution. When used with weight distribution this reducer is rated for 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 1,000 pounds tongue weight. However, the use of this extender reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 1/3. So for example if your trailer hitch tongue weight capacity is 1,000 pounds it would be reduced to 667 pounds when using the extension. The other option is to use a 2-1/2 inch shank...

You have a couple of options depending on the size of the receiver on your 2002 GMC 2500HD. The tailgate on your truck is close to 20" tall so it sticks out around 17"-18" past your bumper. For a 2 1/2" receiver you can use the 7" long Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender item # HR26 and the 13-1/4" Long Brophy Ball Mount item # BH20 to get past your tailgate. • Extension For Weight Distribution Hitch To Prevent Truck From Hitting Trailer Cap When Maneuvering
I have a couple options that will help you extend your weight distribution hitch. First the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26. This will fit your 2-1/2" receiver and also reduces it to a 2" receiver. It moves the hitch pin hole back 7" giving you an extra 7" of clearance. With a weight distribution hitch the extender has a capacity of 1,000lbs tongue weight and 10,000lbs total trailer weight. We do have a solution for you here, though there isn't an option for a longer hitch pin to use a bike rack - including your Kuat Transfer - with a 2-1/2 inch hitch. There isn't a longer hitch pin because the 2 inch shank would still not be fully inserted into larger 2-1/2 inch receiver, causing all kinds of stability issues and generating a lot of movement and force at its connection point. • Can I Use a 2" Reducer on a 2-1/2" Hitch on a 2020 Dodge 2500?
Yes! You can definitely use a 2" hitch receiver reducer on your 2-1/2" hitch. For that route, I recommend either the Curt Hitch Reducer # C45405 or the Brophy Reducer with 7" Long Extender # HR26 (depending on your length needs). It is important to note that while the # C45405 does not reduce your hitch's overall weight capacity, the # HR26 reduces your hitch's overall capacity by 1/3. I went ahead and attached helpful demo videos of both of these products for your convenience.
