The rack is much bigger than my previous one. I was disappointed that it was made in China instead of the USA. It assembled very easily and the light kit works very well. The only draw back is I can no longer open my tailgate with the rack installed due to the spare tire hitting the raised rack.

For most manufacturers of the cargo carriers that we carry, they will be made overseas. We do have a manufacturer that have their products made in the US, called Lets Go Aero. Please check out part # H01465, which is going to be a bit smaller and have only a 300 lbs capacity, but it is the only carrier that I am aware of that is made in the USA.

by:

Purchased in March 2023. I really like the size, it holds a lot. The carrier is very sturdy, well made and assembled very easily. I purchased the light kit but found wiring could have been a little longer to dress the cables neatly down toward the hitch.

by:

The carrier was exactly what I was expecting. High quality, powder coated, and heavy duty. This will allow me to transport my mower, pressure washer, cooler, and anything that I do not want inside my Jeep. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

by:

This a very nice hitch rack. Well built, lots of space, long hitch tube works very well with Jeep Wrangler JL spare tire, however, you will not be able to open the swing tailgate with the rack on. Its not a big issue as it provides a good amount of clearance to the ground. If you use this carrier with one of the hitch rack cargo bags, it really adds to the cargo capacity of the rack. I have been very happy with this rack, I also like that you can add additional tail/brake lights to the rack.

Update, Still supper happy with the carrier. It did great during hunting season hauling heavy loads. One word of caution specifically for Jeep Wrangler owners. If you run a larger tire than stock ie-35x12.50x17, like I do, the racks tubing is not long enough to make it into the hole for the hitch pin to line up. You will either need a hitch extension or another hole drilled in the tube most likely NOT recommended by the manufacturer. Still keeping the 5 star rating.

5/28/2020

I do not recommend drilling a hole however the Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches part # 80307 will work to extend the hitch. It does cut the tongue weight of the hitch in half so you will not want to exceed half of the tongue weight rating of your hitch.

by:

I bought this for our trip to Alaska.(approx. 15,400 miles road trip). IT was mounted on the backend of a fifth wheel trailer with two bins and a small generator, approx 250 lbs. I had no problems with the item.

by:

The cargo carrier is well made, however I used it on the rear of my travel trailer and it was too bouncy. I sold it after our 1st trip. Had it been installed on the hitch on my truck it would have been more solid.

by:

First off, etrailer is great. I shopped numerous other sites and they had the best price on his cargo carrier. Second, they kept me in he loop from start to finish and had the cargo carrier delivered on the 3rd business day (maybe it was the 2nd).

The cargo carrier was easy to put together. I haven't used it yet so I can't comment on that but will follow-up once I have.

I do believe I will eventually order an anti wobble hitch pin though. There is quite a bit of play in my 2" receiver but maybe that won't be a factor once I have some weight on it.

Sam

6/13/2014

Looks really nice - Im looking to get one for my Jeep too. Have you had any troubles since you wrote this review ? Did you need the anti wobble pin ? How easy is it to put it on and off, my concern is that I will need to take it on and off a lot.

Chris B.

6/19/2014

This is for Sam. No, I have not had any problems with the cargo carrier. It is a little heavy but I can take it on and off by myself. I hang it on the wall in my garage so it stores nicely out of the way. It does wobble but it doesnt really seem to affect anything. I usually try and make sure my load is balanced.I think it is a perfect addition for the wranglers limited storage space.

by:

Love the trailer! It is very sturdy and perfect to use on long trips to give us more space to carry luggage, etc. I recommend pairing with a waterproof carrier bag that you can also buy from etrailer.

by:

The Reese cargo carrier and anti-rattle lock both arrived quickly and in perfect condition. My 14 year old son and I put the carrier together in about 15 minutes and installed it on my 2019 Toyota 4Runner. Very happy with the the quality of the carrier. It is very sturdy. We hauled (3) 5-gallon gas containers to the gas station, filled them and returned home without incident. The carrier performed as I hoped it would. This was the first of many jobs I expect this carrier to help with in the future. Although the photo may not show it, the containers were secured with heavy duty bungee cords during during our trip.

One year later and still using the Reese carrier frequently. Its holding up well and is super easy to use.

I was very disappointed to receive by items. One box being completely damaged and open and the thick bar completely out and about. The other box not even completely covered as shown in the pictures provided. Very strange how a box was not available to fully enclose the box that the product came in. Luckily the products were not damaged but still very disappointed in how it was delivered and the state of the packaging.

by:

Solid carrier with plenty of room!Wow, I put this carrier to the test on a 1,600 mile road trip with our 2007 Toyota Highlander and was not disappointed. Plenty of room to store luggage for a family of four plus a load of Christmas presents. We kept everything secure and dry with the etrailer.com 20-cubic foot cargo bag and kept side movement to practically nil with the anti-rattle hitch pin. All around, the whole set up was rock solid and looked great!

I highly recommend the light kit as well. With the cargo bag fully maxed out, the Highlander's taillights were blocked. And since we do a fair amount of driving at night I also added some reflective tape all around the top bar to give not only the sides some visibility, but also the back to get the attention of those not-so-attentive drivers behind me.

Lastly, the kit was easy to put together; it came with spacers but I did not need them to obtain a flush assembly; the separation problem some have reported during assembly was avoided by torquing down the bolts around the nameplates before the main bar bolts, just as others have reported to have worked for them.

How did you mount the license plate to the carrier?

Patrick B.

12/3/2012

It looks like he might have used some self tapping screws to secure it to the railing, but I am not sure. I can send an email to him so he can come back and respond.

Ray J.

12/3/2012

@ Bob - I drilled two holes to accomodate the standard bolt size used to mount the license plate to the car and then used nuts to secure the assembly. As a side note, two years later the carrier is holding up well. Have used it numerous times for short and long hauls and even my neighbors are borrowing it :-

Patrick B.

12/3/2012

Thanks for the follow up!

Bob D.

12/3/2012

Thanks Ray... I dont like self taping screws, taking them in and out will eventually mess up. Your idea of through bolting the plate is what I was going to do, but I was concerned about weakening the structure. Glad to see this is not an issue with you two years later.... C-Ya! BfD

by:

This is a very study and well designed product. It's larger than many of the cheaper carriers you can get and is almost as wide as my small SUV, so I bought the optional light kit. That was well designed also and fit right into the openings designed for it. All things considered, it's a good product and the description is accurate.

by:

I bought this carrier rack as the base unit for a generator box that I installed on the back of my travel trailer. It worked perfectly, and I've been using it for almost a year with no issues other than instant rust on the lower parts of the frame the first time it rained. A can of rust inhibiting spray paint took care of that issue.

I did a ton of online research and chose this model because it actually has a large distance between the hitch receiver and the carrier and I needed it to stick out far enough to clear the spare tire. This model also has about a 4 inch rise between the hitch and the carrier which helps prevent it from dragging on the ground when going over gullies and steep driveways and such. This was the only one I found that didn't sit straight out from the hitch.

The carrier itself is quite robust. It was easy to assemble, and I installed the LED light kit (super easy to install) and added some reflective tape for additional visibility. It is a bit heavy and awkward for one person to install on a vehicle, but I managed to do it and an "anti-rattle" hitch pin (also purchased from etrailer) took care of the sway. I didn't worry about the up and down movement because I bolted a metal box inside to carry 2 portable generators and the weight seems to keep it pretty stable.

I've attached a couple of photos... please note that my trailer is backed up against a 6 inch retaining wall, so the rack is 6 inches closer to the ground than it is when I'm driving.

Ordered this cargo carrier, extra large bag and light kit. Shipping was extremely fast; arrived in less that 4 days. Easy to assemble, I did however run to my local hardware store and got extra heavy duty washers to be sure all was nice and snug when assembled. The cargo carrier assembly was as easy as described; however no matter how I put in the lights, the plug wire was not long enough. Bought a $4 extender at Walmart. Be sure to put the rubber grommets in first, then put the lens in !!! Packed 3 large suitcases, 2 large duffel bags, smaller bags and still had room!! We did a 800 mile round trip to the beach, ran through some terrible rain storms, but everything stayed bone dry inside the cargo bag. Great product, fast shipping; wish I would have bought this long ago.

Thank you for the picture of bag! What is the brand and model of the extra large bag?

Patrick B.

7/15/2013

The bag in Todds photo is the the etrailer.com Extra Large Cargo Bag, part 988501. 54 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches tall. It is designed to fit the largest cargo carriers like the Pro Series carrier that Todd is using it with. Check the link:

I used this for 3 10 hr+ trips now and it has performed flawlessly. plenty of room and capacity. And it also sits high enough to clear the dual exhaust on my 2013 Ford escape without restricting access to my rear cargo area. I would also recommend purchasing the piece that stabilizes the hitch it really help and create a snug fit with no rattles. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase I will definitely come back to Etrailer.com for future purchases

Chris P.

1 year later still going strong. The carrier is holding up very well. The coating isnt wearing much at all if any. still extremely happy with the purchase

by:

Good and strong cargo carrier. I have hauled close to the 500lb limit, and it doesn't even flex.
I strongly recommend some extra ratchet straps between rack and vehicle, just to remove any wiggle from play in the hitch.

by:

very easy to assemble and install. My lights fit it fine from the old one. Nice and sturdy and would recommend to anyone. The paint did come off the expanded metal floor in many spots. I recovered with spray paint.

Vern P.

12/19/2023

Wonderful except the paint on the expanded metal floor. I have repainted twice in some areas as even my spray paint has come off. Other than that, it is very sturdy and dependable.

by:

This product has worked flawlessly for me since I purchased it last year. It attaches to the bumper of my Grand Design 315RLTS. I usually put a couple of large totes on the back and it travels without issue. This has been an excellent purchase and the product is very well made.

by:

Easy to install took about 10-15 minutes and was able to hook up to Highlander with ease. Solid product!!!!! Enough clearance for brake lights and enough separation from vehicle!! Definitely recommend silent hitch pin.

by:

Powder coat was lacking, the top bar was scratched to pieces. It also has a lot of play when in the receiver I had to bay an anti rattle apparatus.

by:

This cargo carrier is awesome! No problems whatsoever and we LOAD it up for camping!.

The cargo capacity is 500 pounds. You do want to make sure that you are not exceeding the tongue weight capacity of your vehicles hitch.

by:

I purchased this cargo carrier for my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. It came disassembled and following the instructions, I had it set up in less than 30 minutes.

I mounted it to my Jeep's hitch and it sits perfectly. I have over-sized Nitto Terra Grappler tires (305/55/R20).

The goose neck on the carrier clears my rear tire by 4" (see photo).

Brad

6/13/2015

Hi Bill,I also own a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. Can you open the rear door with the unloaded cargo carrier installed?

by:

I have only taken it for a test drive so far, but it seems very sturdy and is exactly what I was looking for. The shipping box was in rough shape, and there were some minor scratches on the paint in one corner, but nothing worth fussing about.

Nathan

8/17/2023

Ive only used the carrier once, but it worked exactly as expected. It was solid and did not rattle or shake. I kind of wish I had gotten the folding version to allow the rack to be folded up and out of the way, but I was concerned about the pivot point causing more wobble while driving. For now, I have to just remove the rack entirely once we get to our destination.

by:

The cargo carrier is well built and stu rdy.

by:

Well made and arrived without damage. Put it together in 15 minutes. Using it for a massimo minibike carrier for ice fishing. Dimensions are accurate and worked perfectly.
