Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

I'm giving this hitch a 5 star based not only on the hitch but my overall experiences with Etrailer. I have owned this hitch for a year. There are better weight distribution hitches out there, but I must say it's a great hitch for the money. It was fairly easy to install on my own and the set up is straight forward. I did not get the sway control, but you can easily add it to this hitch. Engaging the bars can be difficult if you're not on perfectly level ground.

Amy the Etrailer rep was outstanding & very helpful!

Works as advertised, no problems. Good product.

by:

Product itself seems very stoutly built. It can't be easily installed if your trailer jack wheel is on the side of the a-frame, like mine is. The offset bracket kit doesn't help at all in this case. I had to move my jack wheel farther aft to make it work.

The packaging is just way to flimsy for the 81 lb. weight. It came crushed with holes and stuff hanging out. I've seen several other reviews with this same complaint. Fortunately, nothing was lost.

Still working well. My complaints were all about shipping and installation issues see original review.

by:

I received this item today. It is incomplete!!
The
inside box had to be torn to shit before the out side box was put around it,. REALLY! Someone should have at least checked to make sure all of the parts and readable instructions were present.
At this point my review rationg would be .5. Just glad I wasnt ready to go on a trip.
All items on parts list 7 thru 19 are mising.

I am sorry. I know that was irritating. We recently shipped you new hardware and were wondering if you had any comments about the installation of the product?

by:

I have been a shadtree machanic all my life, and I recognize quality when I see it. This well made Curt is the confidence builder I needed to feel safe towing heavy loads with a Toyota Tacoma.

by:

Arrived early, my wife and I installed this ourselves with basic tools. Instructions were clear and easily followed. Loaded my trailer just like I would for travel. Went from squatting to nice and level.
I purchased longer chains for the bars due to the Somerset having a stacked frame.
I also purchased a transmission cooler. Installed that with no problems

by:

This hitch system has been great for our camper and 2018 Kia Sorento. The only complaint I have is that the finish coat started to peel and have issues in some spots pretty quickly. It did not take much for there to be a ding or nick that caused issues which then produces some rust.

As far as utility though, the hitch works great and meets the need of what I am looking for.

by:

This is my second Curt system and the quality isn’t as good as the first. The loading bar for the snap up bracket is a rough cut, short piece of pipe, without a handle grip. The hinges on the snap bar bind and do not move freely by hand. The chain links were smaller making it hard to keep them on the hook when loading the spring. I took the chains from my old system and put them on the new system. The paint finish is not as durable as the old system. The holes for the safety pins are not exactly aligned. The system works but I was hoping for better quality.

by:

Put this on our 2006 Nissan Frontier to pull our camper. Worked great, and really helped raise the trailer tongue.

by:

Iam sure the hitch will work well if all the parts are there. This is how I received my hitch off the delivery truck. Not good.

The hitch was easy to install and setup properly with the instructions provided. My pickup and the trailer ride level and I’m guaranteed to not drag the tongue jack again.

Still great, I’ve used it with my old Dodge Dakota and my newer Toyota Tacoma. I had to make a simple adjustment when I first started towing with the Tacoma but it is all good after the slight adjustment.

by:

Works well on my f 150 and wolf pup tra iler

by:

Good fit and finish of the weight distribution system. Assembled and installed easily in 1 to 2 hours. Seems to be the perfect fit for my trailer and tow vehicle. Way better value than the $900 system that the RV dealer tried to insist that I needed.

This hitch seems very well made and is not difficult to assemble. I’m overall happy with this product except for the chains on the bars isn’t long enough to hook up while using this with a pole tongue adapter.

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

5/11/2018

The Pole tongue adapter you purchased is designed for trailer frames up to 6 inches tall. If the chains arent long enough, lower the weight distribution head by 1-2 sets of holes and tilt the head more toward the front of the vehicle. This will bring the ends of the spring bars higher, and should allow your existing chains to work.

by:

Exactly what i needed good instructions. Package was destroyed and the little bag holdins the hardware had busted open , and the shipper did get everything back in the box before tapping everything up. etrailer was right on it and got the missing parts to me asap thank you for that

by:

Would have been five stars, except one of the grease fittings was broken.

by:

Curt products are well made.

by:

So far I have installed the Weight Distribution Hitch, very easy to install it (saved me 200 $), easier if you have a helper, took me about an hour (with a helper) to put it together, instructions very easy to follow.
Solid construction, you will need tools that usually are not in every house (1" wrench)

by:

This hitch system helped us haul our popup 4k highway miles with no stability issues and great load levelling on our Honda minivan. Setup is relatively easy, however it did require some modifications to the trailer tongue. Overall I recommend this device.

by:

I installed the hitch today, with the information provided on the etrailer website I was able to get the right one for my application first time around. It turned out just like I wanted. etrailer has name brand products at good prices. I'll be back.

by:

Equalizer bars work great with my Dodge Caravan and our Christian Builders tool trailer.

by:

A big improvement in towing performance for my small truck and small travel trailer. Even without a sway control device, the sway is drastically reduced. Great value for the price.

by:

Great product for my needs, etrailer was quick to get my order shipped.
Here's where things take an ugly turn. UPS scattered the parts across 7 or 8 states - but etrailer took care of me. They were pleasant to deal with and took care to get me a replacement promptly.

  • What Needs to be Disconnected on Curt MV Weight Distribution System When Disconnecting Vehicle
When you leave your trailer that would have the Curt MV Weight Distribution System part # C17050 installed you'd end up disconnecting the chains from the chain hangers and then sliding the spring bars out of the head of the system and you'd be set. The chain hangers would stay on the trailer and you could leave the shank installed in the hitch of the truck but most likely you'd take that out.
