Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Integrated Active Sway Control

The TruTrack weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved primarily thanks to the specially designed system head.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings in Detents

On top of the trunnions, there are spring-loaded ball bearings that rest in detents built into the underside of the head. As you travel down the road normally, these ball bearings help to keep the trailer in a straight line by applying pressure inside these detents.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings out of Detents

When sway occurs, the trunnions move inside the head, causing the ball bearings to come out of these detents. When this happens, the ball bearings ride along internal grooves in the head as they work to return to the detents to snap the trunnion back in place. This action effectively returns your trailer to center.

TruTrack Spring Bar Bracket

Additional sway control is created by the spring bar brackets. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also permits a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Allowing the spring bars to hang freely also minimizes the tension described earlier. This limits your system's ability to hold your trailer in line behind your tow vehicle.

Not only do the brackets on the TruTrack work to constantly hold your trailer in line, but they also supply friction to force it back into place should any sway occur. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Head Tilt Adjustment

TruTrack Head Position

The TruTrack's unique head adjustment method sets it apart from traditional washer-style setups by taking the hassle and guesswork out of finding the correct tilt. The main drawback with the washer method stems from the need to add or remove washers to determine the proper tilt. So each time an adjustment is required the hitch head must be disassembled so that the washers can be either removed or stacked on, and then reassembled. Not only is this time consuming, but the trial and error necessary to determine the precise number of washers can be frustrating.

The TruTrack simplifies the entire process by giving you 5 preset adjustment points to choose from. As a result, you can quickly and conveniently achieve the proper tilt without ever needing to disassemble the head or keep track of washers. To fine-tune the system simply start out in Position 1, which is the lowest head tilt setting. This setting applies the least amount of tension to the spring bars. As you continue to adjust the head tilt, more tension will be applied to the spring bars. Work through the positions in order until the correct tilt setting is determined. Once your tow vehicle is level, use the oblong washers in conjunction with the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank in the desired position.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The TruTrack's spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, the TruTrack's spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Simple Spring Bar Setup

TruTrack Spring Bar Install

The support brackets of the TruTrack easily clamp onto your trailer frame to provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars on the brackets during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar onto an L-shaped bracket. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

I had a close call I wanted to share, I had torqued the main bolts then had to adjust the tilt again later so I had to lossen them again. I tightened them but I forgot to come back and re-torque them. I loaded the trailer and pulled it a few miles and the upper adjustment pieces twisted and the center holes elongated. I was probably a few minutes away from total failure. I bought new parts from Curt and replaced the damaged ones and the hitch is working as intended. I had a very close call! Though I would share this near failure hopefully to save someone else from the same mistake.
Otherwise the hitch is great leveling up my truck and reducing sway. Also etrailer got it to me quickly and followed up to make sure my hitch was delivered in good condition.

Totally failed, these parts elongated again and I had to replace the hitch.

@Steve We're sorry to hear that happened! We checked with Curt, and were told that there are two circumstances that could cause that tilt spacer to elongate like you described. 1) The 1000 lb tongue weight capacity of the # C17500 was exceeded. When choosing the correctly rated system for your needs, you'll want to use the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer, not the dry or empty tongue weight. 2) This can also happen if the head bolts weren't torqued to the proper 200# rating. Once torqued, they need to be checked frequently to ensure they retain the proper torque. Curt tells us that the second possibility is the most common, but either scenario could cause what you unfortunately experienced.

Seems to work well, minimal sway when large semi's pass or wind gusts. Downside is hitch assembly is very heavy. 9000lb travel trailer, ram 2500 gas truck

Still working well, was making more noise on backing maneuvers until I added grease per the manual, now much much quieter

by:

I'm using this in conjunction with the Gen-Y Torsion-Flex weight distribution shank and it makes towing my camper a breeze! Very comfortable and very secure.

This product is well worth the money, I ordered it and the only problem was UPS totally destroyed the first shipment and about half the product was missing. etrailer was very helpful and sent another hitch out very quickly and had UPS pick up the damaged parts and return them no charge.
I use it on my 2013 F-150 pulling a 8.5x20 show car trailer, the trailer would sway anytime a semi would pass on the freeway and made it sometimes a white knuckle ride. But after adding this product it calmed the problem down to just a slight nudge when one passes now it was and is well worth every penny I paid for it and customer service is great with etrailer. If your having any problems with sagging (not your pants) or sway this is the perfect product.

Works good ! Stops sway. Noise.

I bought and installed this hitch so my brother could pull my trailer across country. Installation was the Curt Tru track C17500 WDS on my 2017 Coachman Catalina Legacy Edition travel trailer, being pulled with a Ford F-150. This is the first experience I've had with installing and using a WDS. Instructions were clear and simple to follow, and after about 3 hours and going through various hitch tilt settings to get enough weight on the front axle, we were ready to go. I would have given a higher rating, but I did encounter a problem with the A-frame placement on the trailer tongue. With my tongue, it was impossible to place the A-frames at the required 4" from the end of the spring bar due to the cross support angle iron that holds my battery. At first, I tried placing the A-frames behind the angle iron, but that put them at only 3" from end of spring bar, causing the spring bar to slip out of the L-bracket on a tight turn. I ended up having to cut part of the angle iron away in order to move the A-frames far enough forward to keep this from happening. I'm just curious if others have had this same problem and if etrailer and/or Curt are aware of this potential issue, or if possibly I was sent the wrong hitch for this particular trailer. Seems to me that the spring bars should be a couple inches longer for this particular setup, to keep this from being an issue. We were on a tight schedule, so I didn't have time to contact customer service to help resolve this matter...so I just went ahead and modified the trailer as needed. Other than that, the system seems like it is going to work just fine... my brother left out today hauling the trailer from GA to AZ. We'll see how it goes.

Weight distribution systems are only specific to the tongue weight of a trailer, not to the design or the trailer make and model. Unfortunately, the sheer numbers of trailer makes and models would make it impossible to fit guide them correctly to provide fit information for specific trailers.

by:

Very well built and stout hitch. Have used for a year with almost 15K miles on my 7000# trailer. Some wear is begining to show on the brackets the bars ride on but i suspect it wouldnt be an issue for another 40-50K miles. Adjustment has been very easy as we seem to continually be adding more stuff to the rig and truck bed. I have only ever noticed slight porpoising on very rough roads, but nothing unexpected. Sway has been very goods even in high winds. I would feel comfortable with this hitch on a much larger trailer.

by:

First off etrailer.com had a ton of information and the website was able to answer all my questions. My weight distribution hitch showed up fast and as described. Hitch was easy to install and worked exactly as described. I tow a 4000 pound camper with approx 400-800lbs of tongue weight depending on bed and camper load. I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma. This hitch is easy to adjust and leveled the load. This hitch also allows backing up and that was a major selling point.

I will be towing up to 5500lb with my 2016 TRD OFF ROAD DC auto, Do you recommend this hitch Thanks Tom C.

by:

I purchased this to upgrade our 800lb version which matched a smaller trailer. I was so impressed with the way the first hitch functioned that I knew I’d stay with the same style hitch.

by:

I've owned this weight distribution hitch for a year now. Hauling travel trailers and 5th wheels professionally, I needed a unit that was dependable and one that would hold up to the rigorous demands of a professional hauler.
Although the shipping box took a real beating during transit, miraculously everything was there. I would highly recommend this unit to all who pull a travel trailer to their vacation destinations. This unit will give you a stress free experience with no white knuckles while passing the big rigs on the highway. The trailer will follow a straight, true track behind you. Enjoy your driving experience.

I am disappointed by the weight of the hitch head. When I spoke with e-trailer, I was looking for a lighter head than my Husky (40 pounds). This one is a full 60 pounds and is a brute to lift and maneuver. No way can I lift into storage compartment or back of my truck. I am figuring out a shoulder harness system-but be warned-it is VERY heavy.

I did not want to pay the restocking fee or shipping back, so am giving it a try. If it proves to be too much for me to handle, I will sell it and get something with a lighter head

It came very well packed and totally intact, but I was told 2 boxes and it was one box 118 pounds. That was a big challenge!

Instructions are good and it was easy to get the ball to the correct height-again the head is very heavy as you are trying to get the correct hole on the shank. Extra hands would be helpful but I'm doing this on my own.

In the process of installing on trailer and had to move relays and other stuff out of the way to mount the brackets. Picture shows what I had to move. It's about 34-35" back so keep that in mind.

I have a narrow frame and the bolts provided are about 1.5" longer than needed. I went and got shorter bolts because they need to be removed when adjusting brackets for a different tow vehicle. Of course you will need deep sockets, and 2 large (1 1/8 I think) for the head

I haven't used it yet but heading out on long trip so it will be tested. I'm rating it before testing-one star off for the weight and difficulty moving it. Not for anyone weak!

I bought this to replace an older style equalizer hitch (with the chain bars) and needed to add anti sway, which my old hitch did not have. Adding an anti sway bar to the old hitch would have cost a couple hundred $$ with welding and ball installation, so I opted to just start over.
My application is a 24' (box length) 10000GVW toy hauler that was wagging from time to time.
I have many years of towing experience with pull behinds and fifth wheels so I knew what I was looking for while shopping. I have had Curt hitches before and know that they are a quality product. The Equal-i-zer hitch was considered but it was more in cost. In the end, the mechanics of the Curt hitch were superior to the Equal-i-zer for less money.
Installing the hitch was easy and took less than 2 hours. One adjustment was necessary to get the proper tension on the bars and adjust them to no more than 4" hangover on the bar tray, as well as level towing with the equalizer factor.
There is no option but to get it installed correctly, so if you don't have any or limited experience with installing hitches, get help from a friend who has or get professional help. You don't want your camper flailing down the road or in the ditch because of improper hitch installation.
First trip out on winding mountain roads with very windy conditions was excellent...no more wagging trailer...very impressed
Backing the trailer in the campsite with relatively tight jack-knife potential angles was not a problem with no issues with the bars. I watched closely with these tight angles to make sure no problems were awaiting me, and no problems at all. Instructions recommend removing the bars with tight turning angles and that would be a good idea if the angles were were getting to extreme.
So, I highly recommend this hitch for load equalization and anti sway.

The Good:
Easy to install
Performs as expected

The Bad:
No torque specifications that I found for the bolts, so I just rompt on it with a breakover bar to get it tight.
Installations instructions were about a C+
Hitch head itself is VERY heavy so be prepared to grunt and swear as you remove or reinstall it from your truck hitch.

by:

It has been a good weight dist hitch, Did it’s job so far, the anti sway works very well. I would recommend the hitch.

I only have one issue with it. The silver pieces with the pins that hold the hitch in position for whatever setting you’d like from 1-5 tend to bend if you use position 5. I bought a replacement set and they bent too. It doesn’t seem they will bend enough to come out, but you may want to keep a spare set of these just in case. The pin kind of tries to peal out of its hole part way

Links amd torsion bars started to rust after first use. Should be powder coated.

Performing well but receiver and sway bars have rusted.

by:

This CURT weight distribution anti-sway set up has been fantastic. Pulled our travel trailer from Texas to Colorado (thru the mountains) and back and no problems. It made it an easy pull.

by:

Put a little time into setting up the hitch and measuring your tongue weight, and this hitch allows my 1/2 ton and trailer to ride level with no issues. Thanks etrailer for always being there to answer my questions!

by:

Ordered online and then made a second order. Called first thing in a.m. to have orders combined in order to save on shipping.
Customer service was excellent.
3 to 5 Day Shipping arrived in 4 business days.

Curt Tru Track works great.
I cant believe the difference in towing. Smooth and straight as an arrow!
The product was easy to put together and instructions were simple. I started putting it on at dusk and finished by the light of streetlight with no big issues. Easy to adjust!
I installed this unit after talking to some professionals. They said going up on tongue weight is not a big issue. The Tru Track is rated for 1000lb GTW. My application is on Jeep Grand Cherokee with 500 lb tongue weight capacity and 5000lb Gross Tow Capacity.
Havent tried all competitor brands but very happy with the product!

Even being a newbie at camping, I couldn’t have purchased a better system. I now have been all over the state camping and this hitch system has never let me down, nor left me feeling anxious.

Jeffrey

4/6/2023

Still going strong with absolutely no issues. Couldn’t have purchased a better hitch.

by:

The hitch seems well built and sturdy. The problem I had was that the directions for the initial set up are missing large chunks of information. For instance, the directions in Step 3 give a guide on where to set the hitch ball height for "For cars, vans and small SUVs", but say nothing about setting up a truck hitch. This caused numerous assembly and disassembly of the hitch head and shank for trial and error. Then when setting up the spring bars, instructions say to place the tilt spacers in the upper most position. A few steps earlier you are instructed to measure the front and rear bumper height from the ground. After the spring bars are attached, instructions say that the vehicle should "settle evenly". What does that mean? The front and rear should both drop exactly the same? Step 3 states " The tow vehicle's uncoupled ball height will be set higher than the coupler height measured in Step 1 to allow for vehicle squat when coupled to the trailer." So that means that the rear will settle more than the front. But how much? With any hitch, the front end will raise when a load is placed on the rear without sufficient force shifting the weight to the front axle. Then step 17 states that if the vehicle can't be "leveled", to adjust the hitch head further down. Is the goal to level the vehicle front to back, or maintain the difference in the front bumper and back bumper that was recorded in step 2? As stated the hitch itself is well made, and should perform as designed, but the instructions need to be clarified to eliminate much guess work and wasted time.

by:

The box arrived on perfect condition and in 3 days. Looks like etrailer reinforces the box possibly? Either way everything was there and no issues. Have not installed or towed with the hitch yet but will be in a few weeks. Quality of the hitch is pretty amazing, coating is solid.
Hope to have a fully review soon on our 2017 F150 and 37 ft travel trailer.

by:

The problem that I have is that based on the vehicle I tow with and the tong weight, I have the correct hitch. However, due to the fact that my tandem axel box trailer is only about 11 inches off of the road bed, there is not much clearance under the hitch if I correctly adjust it to balance the weight. It will drag the pavement in places where the side roads or drive ways are uneven. So it is not the hitch, but no mention to check the existing trailer distance on the underside needs to be considered!

by:

The build quality of this hitch is remarkable! The instructions are clear and concise, and printed easy for my bad eyes to read. eTrailer shipping is so fast, I'm not sure what sorcery they accomplish it with. Customer service, mostly a thing of the past, is fantastic, and I am always contacted by them first just to make sure everything is okay. Shopping here is an amazing thing that everyone should experience! Thanks so much!

by:

The hitch is great. Easy to install with nice to follow directions. The only problem is with shipping the box was destroyed and there was parts hanging out of it but everything was there. The instructions were there but they were damaged but we could still read them. My only recommendation would be for a better shipping company.

by:

Love this thing! Got to reading about towing liability after an accident. I bought this to take out my liability because Toyota requires a WDH after 5K. It has built in sway control. Towing my Jeep JKU to go off road is no longer a white knuckle tow.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

First: I attest under penalty of RV hell that this is not a paid endorsement of either the product or etrailer...lol

Word to the wise. Before we installed this product, we installed an electric tongue jack and a cordless impact drill for $70 from Harbor Freight. Both of these helped the quality and efficiency of the install of this system...it would have been a lot more work cranking up and down on a manual jack and then also cranking up and down to fine tune the weight distribution system.

Now, on to the review: This product was easy to install and has almost totally negated the visible swag on the rear suspension of our tow vehicle. I was anticipating having to purchase E-rated tires and air bag suspension for a 1/2 ton pickup. This equalizer works well enough that the tow vehicle looks fine. I realize this is the intent of the product...but have to say that it probably saved over $1000 in further modifications. I must also really brag on your installation video. We were not certain about installing it ourselves...but with the video combined with the great instructions, it was easier than we ever thought would be possible(this also saved us at least $150 on installation costs for what would have been an inferior product). I considered putting the pics of the trailer hooked up without the system, but am afraid I would be laughed off the internet for what could have passed for an episode of "Sanford and Son". Trust me, it made a big difference.

I'm inspired enough from this install to try and install a brake system for the same trailer. Looks to be a great video for it as well. We purchased it from etrailer and combined it with a wiring harness to fit my exact make/model of vehicle and I'm hoping it will be as good of an experience as the sway control system.

Great job etrailer and kudos to your video crew(s)!

Cody W.

7/19/2016

Product is still working great. In fact, we moved up to a one ton vehicle and had to transfer it. Obviously the height is different, so we used the same video for the install to adjust it to the new vehicle. Works great!

by:

I have had this weight distribution setup on my 2005 Silverado 2500HD and 19 foot toy hauler for a year. Trailer wait loaded is about 7,000lbs. This product has been amazing and works every time. Once the setup of height and a ball angle were done the install/removal is easy. Backing up (even at pretty serious angles) has never been a problem but I now remove the bars before I backup whenever possible just to be safe. The ball mount is very heavy duty and came preassembled but has required grease (zerk fittings). The sway control in heavy winds has been amazing also. I highly recommend it.
**Tip - install the bars while you have the trailer on the tongue jack right after you secure the ball and the bars go on without the tool or any pressure. Then when you lower the tongue jack and put the weigh/squat on the truck the bars will become loaded as they level out**

Tom M.

3/20/2018

Two years of regular use. I have used this hitch setup with three different trucks and it has worked perfectly in every configuration. Toy hauler loaded with Polaris RZR and truck bed full of firewood. Steady as a rock with now swaying.
