Video Transcript for Review of Curt 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Ball - A-90

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff from etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Curt two inch chrome hitch ball. With a 10,000 pound weight, gross towing weight capacity. Now this hitch ball provides the connection point for your trailer's coupler. This one you can see is a nice durable corrosion resistant chrome finish.

A few dimensions on this. The diameter and the ball is two inches. The weight capacity, which will be stamped on the top is 10,000 pounds. Now I do want to give you a few critical dimensions. So when you go to purchase a hitch ball, you do want to make sure it'll fit your ball mount.

So the one of them is the length of the shank, which is this portion here. So we're gonna measure from the bottom to the end of the shank. So the length on this one is going to be right at two and five eights inches long. The other critical measurement is the diameter to make sure it'll fit into the ball hole of your ball mount. So on this one is gonna be right at one and a quarter inches. So again, this is designed to fit a ball mount with a one and a quarter inch ball hole and the thickness of the ball mount needs to be either a half inch up to one inch thick and this will fit on there correctly.

Now, if you notice it does include the lock washer and the nut. So when you do go to install this, you'll drop this through the hole in your ball mount. Put your lock washer on, take your nut, go ahead and start it. And then tighten it down to the torque specs that are recommended. Now, the height on this ball mount once it's installed from the bottom here to the very top, it's gonna be right at two and three quarter inches from the bottom of the flange to the top of the ball.

And when you do install this, it will require a socket size of one and seven eighths inches to fit this nut. But that should do it for the review on the Curt two inch chrome hitch ball with the 10,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.

This is the perfect hitch ball to match the capacity of the hitch on my Class A Motor Home, giving me a margin of safety for the entire towing system when pulling my car / dolly.

by:

Not all 2" Hitch Balls are the same. I didn't realize until I started comparing them, but based on the size of the shank, the towing capacity can vary wildly. This 2" ball is rated at 10,000 lbs. I could not find a 2" ball anywhere locally that was rated this high, and it was an excellent price here.

Still working great after a year mounted on our Draw-Tite 4285 Ball-Mount/draw bar. Be aware that it may require professional help to mount it to the required 450 lbs of torque. I managed to use a "cheater bar" plus torque wrench to do it myself with 75 lbs of arm strength applied to the wrench, as shown in pics. I had to support our hitch on blocks, since 450 lbs of force exceeds our hitch's 350-lb rating.

by:

Exactly the ball I need for my weight distribution hitch.

by:

A friend who has towed 9000lbs+ boats, recommended you, and thankfully, I took his advice. The person who answered my call last year was very knowledgeable and gave ne excellent advice for my towing problem(front end sway) and advised me to purchase a proper sway and load hitch, which I did and installed(even made a roll-around" to store the heavy items when not in use).
Thank you for excellent service, bruce

Although I dont tow 10,000 pounds, the extra strength gives me piece of mind for a few more dollars

We have been using these 10,000 lb. 2-inch balls on 7 trucks that tow about 30,000 miles each per year. We replace them every 2 years for safety and have never had any problems with them. I will continue to use this product.

by:

Excellent hitch for the price. Just what my minivan needed after struggling with other types. Made a big difference in pulling my 3000 lb camper. Very easy to set up. I ordered the correct 1 1/4 inch ball shank for a proper fit.

Great product, and etrailer is a great and easy company to work with. I do very much appreciate there attention to what to serve, and find a solution. It means so much today in this business world!!

by:

Everything about etrailer is top notch! Customer service is outstanding! So knowledgeable about their products. Shipping was very quick and the packaging was excellent in protecting the product. So happy with my etrailer experience!
I’m telling friends and family about all the great products and service I received from etrailer. Simply the best there is!

by:

The products were exactly what I was looking for. Jessica W. was very helpful in finding a longer hitch to clear my step bumper; and Justin B. managed to arrange shipping so it would arrive for the weekend. Very satisfied.

by:

solid stuff. Perfect for my wd hitch

by:

The FastWay e2 hitch arrived missing ALL the assembly hardware so I cannot assemble or rate this product. I like etrailer.com a lot but your shipping company is a constant let down. Clearly the box for the e2 hitch has a big rip in it that was cheaply taped up with a bit of weak packaging tape. I don’t think you shipped it that way. Several other times I paid a lot extra for fast shipping but that failed every time. My most recent previous order was paid for 3-day shipping only to arrive 6 days after you sent it out. This happened at least three other times so I obviously won’t try that again. Love the products. Love the videos. The best way for you to improve our customer experience is to get a decent shipping company. UPS just can’t do the job.

Wow I am so sorry to hear that you are missing all the hardware! I will send your information to our customer service team and get you squared away! I will have them look into the shipping costs as well.

I bought a weight distribution hitch to haul my camper but it came with a 2 5/16" ball. Not many people sell 2" ball with a 1 1/4" shaft. Well worth the money. Thank you

by:

Great Hitch Ball. Received it well-packaged and very quickly. It threads more easily than any other Hitch Ball I've owned. Love etrailer!

After using this Hitch Ball quite frequently, its always been fantastic! Glad I bought it, and, glad for etrailer!!!

by:

Easy install, everything included, and great instructional video. Worked out great for my RAV4.

by:

Everything was perfect and as advertised. Thanks you Tammie for your advice and follow through on the order.

The ball-mount, the ball, and the receiver lock are quality construction and fit, just as they should.

After balking at the cost to have an auto-shop add a trailer to our Toyota Highlander, we found etrailer.com and decided to take a chance. The "how to" videos factored considerably in our decision to buy ... they made it look so easy! And surprise! It really -WAS- that easy. We used standard block-type ramps (the kind you can buy for $40 ) to get the SUV up off the ground high enough to get underneath to do the work. Everything came off as easy as it was showed in the videos. Other than the fact this bar is a heavy so we had our teen daughter help hold it steady while we bolted it into place (i.e., get help for when you go to lift it), it went super smooth. Thanks for saving us $280 over the cost the car dealer quoted us! P.S. - be sure to watch the linked videos so you get the right trailer lighting attachment and ball hitch for your new hitch.

We are very happy with our trailer hitch, and all the accoutrements that we purchased with it. Your videos were enormously helpful, the hitch went on easily with a bit of help from our teenage daughter to lift it up into place, and we recommend your business to friends when they express an interest in getting a camper.

by:

What can I say - it is a towing ball. I have a rather large landscape trailer and this is just the ball needed to pull it with some safety margin above the trailer's GVWR -- this is about the highest rated 2-in ball I have seen before jumping up to the 2 5/16" balls usually reserved for campers and other larger bumper pulls. The only negative I have seen on this is the torque rating, which is what it is.

450-ft-lbs -- you better have a [**] beefy torque wrench, be willing to buy one, or know someone who does. Given the cost of torque wrenches above 300 ft-lbs it would be a really nice option if etrailer would offer service where the ball can be delivered pre-torqued on the drop or raise shank of your choice.

I stand behind my initial review though point of clarification. I ordered the ball in 2019, posted a 1 year review in 2020. And now they are asking me for another 1 year update....well 2 years later it is still solid.

by:

Works exactly as you'd expect a standardized hitch ball to work. Not much else one can say about this type of item.

by:

I have used ETRAILER for years. They have great stock and customer service. Look no further than them for service and parts. Everything is nicely packaged for shipping and gets to the door in a timely manner.

by:

Great trailer ball for my use on 1985 Casitas trailer, weighing about 1300lbs.
WhIle I got a shank diameter about 1/8" small, I filled space with silicone caulking to deter movement, and applied two lockwashers.
Great price!

by:

The ball is perfect fit for 1-1/4 receiver hole. A couple of taps to the top of the ball to get it fully seated and yiur ready to torque the nut down. If your looking for a heavy duty ball, this is rated at 10k lbs and should do the job. I was impressed with not only fulfillment but also the speed of shipment and the price was unbeatable! Customer service was also top notch taking time to contact me throughout the order and shipping process. No doubt this will serve my purpose of hauling around my trailer used for cars, tractors, motorcycles and other miscellaneous project items. I've included a couple pictures so you can get an idea of how heavy duty this ball is built.
Great buying experience all the way around.

by:

I needed a 2" hitch ball rated for more than 7,500#'s and this one does it. My previous one was only rated for 6,500#'s and that was cutting it too close for my comfort since my boat is right there at that weight.

by:

Great customer service! After a couple of delivery hiccups(UPS) fault. They Handled it like a pro's.

by:

I have bought from E trailer before. They have the specific tow rated item I am looking for that I can't find locally.

  • Length of Shank on Curt 2 Inch Trailer Ball Part # A-90
The 2 Inch Diameter Ball with Medium Shank, part # A-90 would be the correct ball to use with your Reese SC weight distribution system. The total length of the shank is 2-5/8 inches, while the length of the threaded portion is 2-1/4.

  • Troubleshooting a Trailer that Keeps Separating from Tow Vehicle
If your trailer has come off of your 2 inch trailer ball one of two things are happening. • Is it Okay if Hitch Ball on Tow Vehicle Bumper is a Couple of Inches Higher Than Trailer Coupler
Ideally, you will want both your tow vehicle and boat trailer to be as level as possible when towing. Some of this will depend a bit on the tongue weight of the trailer you will be pulling. For example, a trailer with a heavy tongue weight may actually lower the bumper on your vehicle enough when attached to reduce the difference in height you referenced in your question. I have attached an article on ball mounts and about halfway down the page it goes into detail on how and why a trailer...

  • Curt Hitch Ball # A-90 Recommendation
The Curt Hitch Ball # A-90 should work very well for you. It has the right ball diameter, weight capacity, shank diameter and enough shank length to install on your ball mount. The # A-90 has a shank length of 2-5/8 inches and your ball mount platform has a thickness of 1-9/16 inches which gives you a little more than an inch for the nut to secure to, which would be plenty. I measured the height of the nut that comes with the # A-90 and found that it is 1 inch thick and the washer is...

  • Why Doesn't My 2" Trailer Ball fit Into My 2" Coupler?
I would definitely go back to using a 2" ball because the 1-7/8" is going to be entirely too small and there'll be too much movement in the coupler. What likely has to happen is you need to adjust your coupler to fit the ball. Inside the coupler where the ball hooks up there'll be an adjustment nut that you can loosen to allow the ball to fit. I've attached a picture showing the underside of a 2" coupler and circled the adjustment nut mentioned.
