Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Outstanding…..1984 American Skier + trailer completely restored. Thank you!

by:

I am totally blown away with quality, price and the best part is I had the tires mounted two days after placing the order. Amazing customer service and delivery time.

by:

Quick delivery, good price and got exactly what I ordered. 1 year later tire is holding up as expected!

by:

I've been very pleased with etrailer. We decided to winter our boat on a trailer at home instead of paying for storage. Finding an appropriate trailer and refurbishing it has worked well with their help. We added a surge coupler, brakes, tires, rims, lights and wiring, and changed from bunks to stands and an extra cross member.
Thanks.

etrailer was able to my fears to rest on the Bias tires I purchased. All the items I ordered were received a day ahead of schedule. The packaging was great. Two things that might be noted 1) the box with multiple items should be marked on the out side. Those of us that don't receive boxes often don't know that the box with the packing list is the box with all the parts. 2) The company might add a note on the Bias tire page on what the receive may see when the box is opened. In my case deformed or what appears to be crushed tires. What a surprise to see Bias Tires. Customer service cleared my concerns up quickly. These tires along with all the other parts will be used on my "Car Trailer" project.

by:

Satisfied with the product, but the tire come flattened, which is no problem

by:

Good prices and selection. Fast deliver y.

by:

Great selection and fast service!

by:

No problems so far, wearing good

by:

Great customer service. Right after I placed the order I was contacted with additional options for what I was looking for. The order arrived just as promised. Very happy with the products and the personal attention. I will definitely go back to etrailer for more parts.

by:

Very good tires for a very good price!

by:

The shipping as usually was Great. Quick and efficient. I ordered these tires without the rims since I already have the rims on my boat trailer. These tires came flattened and shaped like a cereal bowl ( dished ). There was also some weird scaring on the side. I couldn't get any local shops to touch them. Then I tried Wal Mart. They did it for 10 bucks each. So in the end this worked out pretty good. I also tried to locate the scars after they were mounted and couldn't find them,

by:

Tires were better than expected.

by:

The tires I purchased were the perfect match for the trailer. Exactly what I needed! I have not had any issues with them. E-trailer was fast and efficient, and made my purchase easy. And gave me the best prices, with no shipping charges! I can't recommend them highly enough.

by:

Tires were poor quality and would not even balance properly. Ended up using it as a spare tire

Trailer tires do not have to be balanced like passenger car tires do since a trailer tires primary duty is supporting a vertical load. You certainly can have your trailer tires fully balanced if you wish, but this is not essential.

by:

received tires as advertised. had them mounted, balanced, good to go.

Great, its nice to have tires that do not bounce with loaded trailer.

by:

My review has more to do with the service so its fine if you don't want to publish it. The website is great. I first went to two major tire places trying to buy trailer tires and their computer systems were not able show any options at all because the aspect ratio was not printed on the old tires and they could not simply search by rim size. Your site easily gave me plenty of options for 14" and probably ended up being a better value. Tires shipped free, quick, and were boxed. I have ordered performance car tires elsewhere and they came in ripped shrinkwrap so I was pretty impressed with this service.

by:

Was very happy. And also fast shipping. Tires and wheels were boxed separately ( instead of banding the tires together) which was nice. Thank you

by:

Prompt and early delivery and personalized communication keeping me informed, I will continue to purchase my tires from etrailer, highly recommended and appreciated.

by:

Tires arrived slightly deformed from shipping. Caused a delay in the mounting time.

by:

Awesome service arrived sooner than expected, Great Price Exact, product, Very satisfied. definitely will purchase from etrailer again.

by:

Recieved my trailer tires on time.Thank you very much. Looks like some good tires. Good value.Steve Sacramento CA.

by:

I made a mistake when purchasing my order contacted their Service team issue was dealt with immediately and shipment proceeded on time.I would highly recommend buying products from the E trailer especially when their service team being this good

by:

I received my tires in a timely matter. I ordered five altogether I order new tires every seven years from etrailer the quality is great the price is great and are always delivered when they say.

  • ST Tire Specs For F65-14 and Compatibility Recommendation
The F65-14 tire is the ST205/65D14 tire and the closest we have is the 205/75-14 size you referenced. That tire is 26.3 inches diameter and 8.1 inches wide. My recommendation for that size tire is the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10235. This tire is rated for 2,200 lbs at 75 psi and speeds up to 81 mph. I've attached a video to assist. This may require adjusting your fenders as you stated. If you need smaller tires you will need to drop to 13 inch...

If you just want tires, we have bias tire # AM1ST90 and for a radial we have # AM10229. Make sure not to mix radial and bias tires for best performance and longest life of the tires. • Replacement Wheel and Tire Recommendation for a 1998 Nitro Trailer
For a 14 inch rim with a 5 on 4.5 inch bolt pattern similar to the one you referenced you would want the part # AM20304. For a tire in the size you have to use as a spare you would want the part # AM1ST90. The pilot diameter of the wheel I referenced is 2.62 inches. This shouldn't matter as long as your wheel is attached with lug nuts and not wheel bolts.

  • What Is the Difference Between ST215/75D14 And ST705/75D14 Tires
If you change from a tire like part # AM1ST90 which is a ST215/75D14 tire to a tire like part # AM1ST86 which is an ST205/75D14, the tire will be about 1/2 inch narrower and 1/2 inch smaller diameter. Both tires will perform well if they are properly inflated and if the trailer is properly and evenly loaded. Most trailer tires have a 65 mph speed rating. Exceeding this speed can cause heat to build up in the tire reducing the lifespan of the tire.

  • Difference Between Bias Ply Tires # AM1ST90 and Radial Ply Tires # AM10234
The difference in tires that have either a D or an R in the tire size description is that a D indicates a bias ply tire, and an R would mean it is a radial ply tire. Examples of each type are ST215/75D14, part # AM1ST90, and ST215/75R14, part # AM10234. The difference in the construction of the tires is that the cords underneath the tread run in different directions. On a bias ply tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel. On a radial ply tire, the cords will...

  • How Do I Find My Correct Tire For My Shasta Starflyte Camper
The fact that you have "ST Tires" means you definitely have a trailer tire. Those tires will be labeled ST before the tire size to designate a special trailer tire. This will mean the tire is designed with stronger sidewalls to handle the extra loads that a trailer/camper will put on the tire. As a result you may have the correct sized tires. In regards to tire clearance, the minimum distance between the inside of a tire and the frame rail depends a lot on the setup of the trailer. But...

If you look at just a 215/75-14 trailer tire, like # AM1ST90 or # AM10229, they will fit on a 14 x 6 inch rim. According to our resident tire expert, the smallest rim you could use with this tire size would be a 14 x 5-1/2 inch. All of the 14 x 5-1/2 inch aluminum wheels we carry have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. So you can use the 215/75-14 on a 14 x 5-1/2 or 14 x 6 inch trailer wheel.

As a general rule of thumb, trailer tires should be replaced every 6 to 8 years regardless of wear. Even though an older tire might appear to have plenty of tread left on it, dry rot and cracking can cause tire failure. If your current tire size is a ST215/75D14 the part # AM1ST90 would work great as a replacement.

The ST205/75-14 is 26.3 inches in diameter and 7.8 inches wide which is about a 1/2 inch wider and 1.7 inches larger in diameter. We have the 205/75-14 available in a bias-ply or a radial tire. We do not advise mixing bias ply and radial ply tires on any vehicle. Each type of tire has a unique cord construction under the tread layer that gives each one different ride characteristics. Bias tires use cords that run on a 32 degree angle to the direction of rotation. Radial tires use cords that run on a 90-degree angle to the direction of rotation. Bias ply tires have a stiffer sidewall and are generally more durable and suited to off-road use, while radial tires are more flexible...

  • Frequent Trailer Tire Blowouts and Dry Rot on a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
Tires blowing out is usually caused by either overloading the tires or because of excessive heat generated when the tires are under inflated. But with all of the problems you are having there may be something else going on as well. I recommend having the trailer inspected for suspension wear. Any egg-shaped holes in the suspension components could be the root cause of the problem. If the axles are torsion axles without suspension then this would not be the case. • Can 205/75D14 Tire Be Used As Spare For A 215/75D14 Tire On Boat Trailer?
If a 205/75D14 like the Loadstar # AM1ST86 was the only thing you had to get you off the side of the road it would work for a vert short distance, but you would not want to use it long. The reason for this is it will be just under 1" shorter than the 215/75D14 tires you currently have. Having a shorter tire on one side will cause the trailer to sit uneven and will put additional weight on the shorter side which is not ideal. Instead I recommend getting the Loadstar ST215/75D14 # AM1ST90...

I think you might be talking about diameter but yes, a 215/75-14 trailer tire will have a slightly larger circumference than a 205/75-14 tire. Specifically, the 205 will have a circumference of about 82.582 inches whereas the 2015 will have a circumference of about 83.838 inches. The diameter of the 205 is 26.3 inches and for the 215 the diameter is 26.7 inches. That is 0.4 inches of difference meaning that it would raise the height of the trailer by 0.2 inches.
