Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

It’s hard to find trailer tires anywhere in our area. 10 dollars to have it mounted at Mavis and good to go.

by:

Tire developed a minor leak in the sidewall from the molding stamp on the side that appears to have been excessively deep. This occurred just after the one-year warrantee, so I am stuck with a manufacture defective tire and no warrantee.

I am sorry that the tire did not last long for you. Let me get you over to customer service to see if there is anything that we can do for you.

eTrailer provided prompt feedback on the order, and shipping status. Tire delivery was on-time and enabled me to get the boat trailer back in action as soon as possible. Definitely recommend eTrailer!

by:

Bought this from they're used section and was pleasantly surprised on the value. it had a few scratches but at the reduced price I'm extremely happy.

by:

My tires came folded in half ruining the integrity and shape of the tire, unhappy to say the least.

I own a camp trailer that was manufactured with the above listed tire, yet I was unable to find this same replacement tire at a reasonable price locally. I called every tire dealer that I knew in the local Albany N.Y. area, starting with local camper suppliers. Either they didn't have the tire or were charging what I considered to be an exorbitant amount. Some suppliers suggested I either buy tires with the rims or buy radial tires, of course I would have to buy a match set of two rather than one. As a last resort, I went on line searching for trailer tires and found etrailer.com. I called and Debora H. answered and handled my every question, completed my order and assured me all was right with the world. She promptly gave me an order number and an estimated delivery date. This employee treated me like I was her only customer for the day and I give her much thanks for her assistance. The delivery arrived a full day ahead of her estimated arrival and I had the ability to follow my shipment from their door to mine...how comforting to know their is a company of this caliber! I will continue to support this outfit whenever I can. As soon as I signed for the delivery with the UPS driver, I received an email from Patrick B. to ascertain if all went well with the shipment and if I was satisfied...once again, how can you not like to deal with folks like this? I have not used the trailer on the road, but I assure you, based on the original tires, I see no reason why I wouldn't be happy. I will agree with others that have commented on these tires...Keep the tires inflated to the camper and tire specs and check them regularly to obtain maximum wear. Thank to all at etrailer.com!

This tire has operated exactly as expected with no maintenance except checking tire pressure before every use. I would buy another set of these tires when or if these wear out! Thanks again Etrailer and those employees associated with my purchase.

by:

Best trailer tire on the market in my opinion. I installed these tires on my ATV trailer about a year ago and I see no signs of wear yet.

Awesome, no visible wear yet, several thousand miles on them.

by:

Awesome tires! Very stable hand helped with bounching.

by:

Great price on the boat trailer tire I needed. I wanted to match exactly with what I was already using. I bought 3 tires, got free shipping and they arrived in a couple of days.

About a year in, the tires are holding up fine. Not many miles on them, but they have stayed true and round, no hop or balance issues, tread wear is minimal

by:

Very pleased with the quality of tires I ordered. Packaged in strut day cardboard box with hole cutout for easy grip and handling.

by:

Tires appear to be misshapen, maybe do to being compressed in shipping from China. Hopefully they'll mount with no problem and take on normal shape when fully inflated. There should be an explanation for this included with the product to assure customer that the tires are not defective as they appear to be. Great service though, tires arrived a day early.

The deformation you mention occurs when bias-ply tires are palletized after manufacture. The tires will mount just fine and take the proper shape.

by:

Excellent all the way. Fast shipping, well packaged, tires were of recent date codes and appear to be great quality.

by:

Service from Etrailer is excellent: courteous, efficient, and shipping was immediate.
I use the Loadstar ST205/75D14 tire on a tandem axle open trailer. I think the tire performs well and is very reliable, but these tires do seem to wear quickly.

ST or Special Trailer tires are built differently than tires for cars or trucks. If they are not kept at their full inflation pressure, their weight capacity s as pressure s and they will wear more quickly.Check the total weight of your trailer and make sure you are not over the weight capacity of the tires, or even really close to it. If so, you may want to look at going up to a load range D tire or keeping a closer eye on tire pressures.

by:

I ordered 2 of the same size tire however 1 came in wrong size. Company created a return shipping label but I had to carry via car to the shipping store nearby…tires are heavy to handle… Other than that good service.

by:

If these last as long as the same brand ones I removed I will be very pleased. Lots of years and miles on the old set. Looking forward to years and miles of memories on this set.

by:

When I first ordered the tires, I was informed they were back ordered and would be delayed for up to two weeks. I was offered a substitute, but chose to stay with my original order and asked if they would expedite. My tires shipped the following week with two-day delivery. That's what I call service!

Great!

by:

Exactly what I needed!

by:

My trailer came with the Loadstar tires and they were excellent for over 20,000 miles. I chose to replace them because we travel on long trips and I didn't want to risk a tire mishap while traveling. They had several thousand miles left on them when I swapped them out.

The new tires now have over 8600 miles on them and have been excellent also; I'll likely buy another set after these wear out. They are quiet, ride smooth, keep their pressures, and wear well. I've had no problems whatsoever.

by:

The first tire delivered was misshapen but eTrailer took care of the exchange instantly with both deliveries in warp time. Customer service was better than great.

Ordered new wheel and tire for my tow dolly to use as spare. Retrieved info from Etrailer web site, placed the order, received confirmation and later same day got shipping info and confirmation. Next day got tracking and delivery info from UPS on delivery date and 4 days later package was on my door step. Thanks Etrailer for the for the great pricing, quick handling and free shipping, Not the first time I’ve used your site and won’t be the last. Thanks for the follow up, 100% satisfied.

by:

After 1 year, so far so good....

by:

Received exactly what I ordered and very quickly! I’ve shopped here before for my
boat trailer tires and consistently get what I need quickly and without any errors in my order or shipping. Great job!

by:

The cheapest price that I found. Easy web page to navigate thru and find what I needed. The first two tires that I purchased came in the same box and were out of shape from possibly having items being stacked upon them. The garage had a little difficulty mounting them on the rims. Ordered two more tires a week later and they both arrived in separate boxes. Going to have them mounted today on the rims.

by:

Ordered 2 trailer tires one came in bad shape. Everyone very helpful to make sure that I got a replacement and even though it's on backorder I'm very happy with the service very attentive which is not always typical of online shopping!

by:

This company has exceeded my expectations. I chose them because of the reviews I read online. They lived up to the reviews. I received my tires on the delivery date and the boxes weren't damaged. We put them on the rims today and everything seems to be good. I received a personal email with my order number confirming I received my order and if I needed any assistance, their number was listed in the email to call them!!!! Definitely will use them again!

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for Size F78-14 Tires on a Boat Trailer
F78-14 is an old size designation and equates to a 205/75-14 tire size so you will want to look at tires in this size. I have included a link to them for you. Since you will be towing approximately 5,000 pounds gross trailer weight and have 4 tires total on the 2 axles, recommend a Load Range C tire, # AM1ST86, which is rated for 1,430 pounds at 35 psi. Four of these tires will have more than enough capacity to support the combined trailer and boat weight. I have included a couple of...

  • Should Light Truck or Trailer Tires be Used on a Boat Trailer
You definitely want to stick with trailer tires on your boat trailer. Light truck tires are a type of passenger vehicle tire and as such they are not built with as thick of a sidewall as trailer tires. A thicker sidewall allows a trailer tire to handle more vertical load. I recommend going with ST trailer tires. The ST stands for special trailer. The difference between a bias ply and a radial tire is the way the rubber is layered. A bias ply is layered around the tire, and a radial tire...

The Kenda # AM1ST86 ST205/75-14 load range D tire you mentioned is rated for a maximum of 65 mph. If you're looking for a higher speed rating, and a C load range tire (1760 lb/tire) would work for you, I'd recommend the Taskmaster # TR20514 radial which has an 81 mph speed rating. If you absolutely needed a D rated tire, you could go with a 215/75-14 radial tire that's only about an inch wider and 1/2 an inch taller like the Taskmaster # TTWTRTM2157514D which also has an 81 mph rating. • Can ST205/75R14 Tire be Replaced with ST205/75D14 Tire on Boat Trailer
As long as you are replacing all the tires on your boat trailer, you can certainly replace an ST205/75R14 with an ST205/75D14 like the Kenda Loadstar # AM1ST86 that you were looking at. These are the same exact size tires but with different ply constructions. You currently have radial ply tires which typically do a better job on highways because they will flex more and run cooler than a bias alternative. Bias tires will have a stiffer sidewall which makes them a good choice for off road...

Yes, the narrower ST205-75R14 tire will fit in place of an ST215-75R14, It is important for all of the trailer tires to be the same size and construction type (bias ply or radial). Using different sizes can cause tracking problems and lead to premature and/or uneven tire wear. Ideally you would replace all of the tires at the same time. • Are Radial or Bias Ply Tires Better on a Trailer With 3 Axles
If the option is available I would recommend a radial tire over the bias tire because the radial tire will provide better stability and more ground contact resulting in a more comfortable ride. A radial tire is going to have better tread wear over the bias ply tire, but when your front axle drags during tight turns it will still take a toll on the tires. Some times drag cannot be prevented, but the best thing to help with this issue is be sure you are towing your trailer as level as possible....

The ST205/75D14 and ST205/75R14 should be essentially the same size. There are differences between tire brands and to a lesser degree between bias and radial. Normally the bias ply tire will look taller because of the difference in construction from the radial tire. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. For those reasons I would recommend an R tire over a D tire. The part # AM10235 should work very well for you.
