How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Easy install to provide greatly improved unhitched trailer handling. This item was the final component to complete a refurbished trailer for my catamaran.

My project started with a 1987 Calkins single-axle used trailer, adding the following E Trailer parts:

1. Miro-Flex Trailer Stop/Turn/Tail Light unit

2. CE Smith V-Wing Bolster Brackets

3. Rectangular Trailer Reflectors, Adhesive Mount - Amber

4. Erickson Hide-A-Hook Truck or Trailer Anchors

5. Pro Series Snap-Ring Swivel Marine Jack

and completed with a hand-built frame assembly and covered bunk boards.

The trailer jack was the perfect addition to my little utility trailer. Makes moving it around a lot easier now. The swivel feature works well and tucks the wheel and jack up out of the way when not in use.

The upgrade to the trailer included the trailer jack, spare tire holder, fenders/brackets, 12" wheels/tires and a spare. I also purchased an anti rattle hitch stabilizer to help quiet down the noise. New longer safety chains are on order and are the last item needed to complete the upgrade.

by:

I called e trailer ready to order a much more expensive product. It was suggested that this product would suite my needs and be notably less expensive.
I installed the product in less than 15 minutes (including reading the directions...).
With this wheel on the tongue of my tow dolly, my wife can move it easily by herself. The construction of the product seems more than I need for this application. I am impressed with the product and e trailer.

by:

The jack and several other items that I ordered online were delivered to my house very quickly (two days). The jack was easy to install and worked as advertised. I mounted the jack on a CE Smith 48810 trailer ("trailer in a box"). The jack will make moving the trailer around a snap. Very pleased. Highly recommend. It should last for years.

by:

I mounted this on my new boat trailer and it's made the job of moving the rig around the driveway so simple and easy on my back while I get the new jon boat outfitted with fishing stuff.

by:

It fits very nicely. Bolted right up.I was pleased to find out it swings op out of the way.. Very nice. I will do my best to find you more business

by:

Great jack for my jet ski trailer. It also has a zerk fitting too which will help it last a long time. Easy to install.

by:

Why didn't we get this sooner!!!? What a great product. Simple to install durable and makes moving our kayak trailer an ease now.

This trailer jack has been used frequently on our double stack Hobie cat trailer and we have wondered how did we get along without it? A great product and highly recommend it for heavy trailer movement.

by:

Great product I needed this for the for the tongue and hitch I put on for the log splitter so I wouldn't have to bend over to pick it up and to be able to move it around the garage

by:

Excellent product. Excellent speed to delivery, even during the virus scare. Looks better than the original unit. Also has a grease zerk to lube up the moving parts.
Packing was first class, plenty of packing, package sealed with commercial stapler, not just with packing tape.

First class all the way.

Seems to be good quality. I like that it has a grease fitting and a removable cap to keep it oiled.
Picture attached includes dolly which was purchased at the same time

Thanks Much, just got in from installing everything I ordered and it
all went on nicely. I rebuilt a 6' X 12' 1999 utility trailer
with treated lumber etc..........plus your parts, looks great. Thanks
again, going to do the same for another utility trailer I have, a
6' X 10, so, I'll be ordering from you later in the summer. Thanks
again

Excellent web site. Easy selection for the specific related product type. Great how dyi video demonstrating installation of product purchases. Notifications on purchases delivery and followup on point. Thank you for the great quality of products too.

by:

as you can see, I still have some parts to replace. But I ordered these parts at the beginning of this week. Used free shipping. Delivered Saturday, done Saturday afternoon. So easy. Looking forward to finishing this trailer. Will use etrailer again

by:

Just installed jack on trailer. Seems sturdy and easily installed. Had been looking for snap ring Jack's for awhile. This was a lot less expensive than my local northern tool store and appears to be higher quality. Definitely will purchase from etrailer again

Jack is exceeding expectations. I have used it a lot and their is no sign of wear or degradation of system. Transitions from vertical to horizontal well. I move the trailer around the barn with weight on it quite a bit and the connection by snap ring has not loosened at all. High quality jack that would be purchased again if nedded.

by:

Bought this Sidewinder jack for my utility trailer but needed it more for my logsplitter. I'll get another one for the trailer. Couldn't be happier. Unit is well made and the swivel option is ideal for most applications.

Bob M.

Because of low trailer clearance I keep bending the original trailer jack. So the second sidewinder cured that problem. I also bought the hand wench, it is also made with the same heavy duty construction. These folks are easy to work with and have quality products at very reasonable prices.

by:

The trailer jack itself works fine but after one year the wheel is wearing away already. It doesn't want to turn when I try to move the trailer to either side. Has to be replaced.

Sometimes when you have a lot of tongue weight on the jack the wheel will not move as freely when the trailer is not moving. Also, these jacks are designed with the wheel assembly attached to the inner tube of the jack. I recommend a jack with a 360 turning caster wheel such as part # F141133. The wheel on this jack will turn a little easier because the construction of the jack allows for 360 turning of the wheel. If you do not want to switch out the jack, a replacement wheel for the proseries jack would be part # F6811S00.

by:

This is a really well made jack that is a perfect replacement for my Triton jet ski trailer jack that really had seem better days. Definitely recommend it.

by:

Does it's job! I have a small trailer and bought this jack to keep my trailer tongue off of the ground where it can sit in standing water and cause the tongue mech. to rust and seize up, it also makes hooking up the trailer easier. I barely lucked out with the swivel clearance, just fit, whew. I couldn't figure out how to best bolt it as I couldn't get the instructed clearance between the bolts and tongue due to my smaller trailer and lack of hole options. I ended up with a rather large gap between the bolts and the tongue so I just rested the tongue on the bottom bolts and cranked the heck out of the bolts to get a good clamp lock. It's a very small trailer with 600lb load cap so I'm not concerned about this jack.

by:

Quick shipping as was the entire order. Upon ordering, I was concerned this jack would be under built for my 18ft aluminum boat. My worries were for nothing. Great jack for the money.

I used these products for a boat trailer restoration. I have since sold the boat

by:

This jack is a great deal and works ver well. I used it on my utility trailer for hauling scrap metal and construction debris and it holds up well. The wheel has never seized up and still holds up. This jack really saved my back from lifting the trailer every time I need to hook it up and move it loaded. The only complaint I have is the crank handle loosened up and came off in transit so I had to make one of my own. Buy this jack, it will pay for itself in time and convenience.

by:

I guess I have had this trailer jack for a year now. I had no clue until I recieved an email from etrailer asking me to write a review. You would never tell by the look or functionality of the jack that it is a year old. Most things after a year of use have some sort of wear and tear or other issue. This looks and works just like it did day 1 out of the box. I installed it on a 2 place open snowmobile trailer that I haul sleds, 4 wheelers, and my lawnmower on at all times of the year. This is a great product and would highly recommend it.

by:

This jack was designed for a rectangular tongue application but I have mounted it on a round tongue by welding the bottoms of two muffler clamps to the tongue. The indent on the swivel plate fits the tube nicely so all I had to do was bolt the jack on. It tucks away nicely on the tongue during transport. My particular application involves a very lightweight trailer (about 300lbs. dry) and the jack is rated at 1,000 so by welding the bottoms of those muffler clamps to the tongue I have a solid foundation for my application. This particular jack works well for me because I'm re-building this trailer for uses a camper , now I can easily move it around as I work on it.

by:

Solid construction -- great quality for the price. Operation is easy, handle turns smoothly to raise or lower your trailer tongue. Swiveling the jack into the horizontal "stowed" position is very easy, too: just pull out the spring-loaded pin, swivel to horizontal, and the pin will snap into place again.

My only complaint was that the nuts & bolts seemed odd sized, and directions did not tell you which sizes you need.

This is really going to save my back!

My only complaint was that the nuts & bolts seemed odd sized, and directions did not tell you which sizes you need.

This is really going to save my back!" />

Installed this on a jet ski trailer after I got tired of lifting the tongue off the ground too many times.
Seems to have some play in the swivel part, so the jack leg leans at a slight angle. Tongue weight is less than 200#s so I'm not worried, but I wouldn't use this on a big trailer anywhere's near it's rated capacity.
Good value for the price.
Happy with it so far, just installed it.

I pulled up pictures of your 2008 Viking Epic 1706 and found that it uses a side mount trailer jack. So since it is welded on you could use a Pro Series swivel jack part # PSEJ10000101 mounted on the other side since this would bolt on with included u-bolts.
