How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Fulton F2 Swing-Up w/ Dual 7 Inch Wheels Review

Today, were going to be taking a look at the Fulton F2 Aluminum Swing-Up-Style Jacks. As you can see, the jack is going to have a nice long plastic handle here, corrosion-resistant, and it has a nice rolling-style grip. It gives you nice torque as youre trying to get your trailer jack down or also back up. Something I think is very unique here on the rear side, you see this little catch When we want to have our jack in the stored position, we just move this down, lift up on that catch, and then as we rotate it up into position, we dont have to worry about our jack handle hanging down. It flatten down here which is very common with a lot of jacks. Also, it does offer a nice rapid screw. It goes down.

It makes good contact. It gives us plenty of lift power. Whenever we get it positioned where we want, something Ive experienced before anyway is Ill get my trailer where I want it, let go of it, and if were on any kind of incline, it starts to roll away. Fulton has solved that problem for you. Right here, you got a wheel chock.

You just press that down. Thats going to keep both of our 7-inch wheels as you can see from turning to hold our trailer right where we want it. Of course, we always want to be safe, throw some wheel chocks on the tires as we normally would, but this is going to help hold that position as were trying to walk around and get those in place. This type offers the dual 7-inch wheels and a 1,600-pound weight capacity. There are several different configurations available. The one we have here today easily mounts on to your 3 by 3 or 3 by 4-inch trailers.

We also offer one that bolts on to the 3 by 5-inch frame trailers. We offer a weld-on variety, and also a variety that comes with no mounting hardware, so you can attach it directly into the plate thats already on your trailer. The F2 Series offers a full anodized construction. As you can see here, the inner tube and the outer tube completely anodized. It helps it to hold up in even the harshest environments. The dual 7-inch wheels are designed, as you can see, they roll independently from one another making it very easy to maneuver and get around without having any kind of torque or something like that applied thats going to prevent this from moving our trailer around.

To help us fit many different implications, there are two nuts located here on the backside. By simply loosening these up, our mounting hardware or mounting bracket can slide the full length up and down to help us customize this to fit a wide variety of trailers. Thats going to make it perfect for your marine recreational or even utility trailers.Once we have it in the right position, well just tighten that back down to make it ready for use. You will want to look into your instructions and get the proper torque, and get it torqued down to that before use. The installation of our jack is a very simple process. Today, were going to show you the bolt-on style. You want to pick out whichever your U-bolts are going to fit your trailer properly. As you can see in this case, weve got that 3 by 4, so were going to use the wider brackets. If you got the slightly smaller trailer frame rails, youll use the ones a little bit smaller or, of course, like we said, or youve got the weld-on applications and things like that.Well position our jack down here where we want it. Slide those bolts around our trailer frame, and right through the four holes that are on our pivoting arm. Now, that will help support the weight, but keep a hand on it. Then, well place a lock washer and a nut on each one. Now each, as you can see, the bolts, the lock washer, and our U-bolts, they all have a nice corrosion-resistant coating on them. Just like our jack, its going to look good and stand up to the test of time. Im just going to get those started for now. Now, we can just take our socket or wrench and get them tightened down.We got it nice and snug. Now, lets torque it down. You want to refer to the instructions to make sure that you torqued them down to the appropriate torque specification, of course. That will complete todays look of the Fulton F2 Series or Swing-Up Trailer Jack with the dual 7-inch wheels and sideline configuration. .

We do have free shipping to the lower 48 states. I see that you are in Alaska and while we would like to offer free shipping there, we are not able to at this time. If you have any problems with the jack please let me know.

This is a great jack. My previous jack(rated to 1200lbs.) was bent after raising the back end of the boat trailer to replace broken leaf springs and that's why I ordered a heavier duty jack. I really like the piece that keeps the crank from rotating while trailering and the dual wheels make it much easier to push/reposition the boat while it's being stored inside. The previous jack was a weld on mount so the installation was more involved. I didn't go with another weld on jack because none of the available weld on type jacks matched the hole positions on the existing weld on plate and I didn't want to deal with getting a welder to install/weld a new plate to the trailer frame. I ground off the plate from the trailer frame and smoothed the surface where the weld beads were. The u bolts that came with the new jack were too small to fit around the trailer frame so I drilled holes through the frame and was able to easily mount the jack with the u bolts provided. The jack works like a charm and looks great too. It was an excellent choice.

The jack has performed excellently since I installed it. I am very pleased with it and it just feels so much sturdier than the original jack. The extra cost to purchase a heavier duty jack wasnt a whole lot more and I really like the confidence it gives me knowing it is stronger. It also cranks smoother with less effort. Couldnt be happier with my purchase. Thanks Rachael.

The trailer jack f2 arrived in perfect shape at a very competitive price. The quality of the product was surpassed only by the fabulous customer service. I teach sales training and customer training and I have a new example of excellent customer service to present to my classes. More purchases to follow. The jack is installed on an all aluminum diamond plate show trailer for my Canam Spyder F3 trailer. The style of the all aluminum jack compliments the trailer.

It’s working fabulously. Best feature is the locking wheel which really stops the trailer without a chock. Classy appearance compliments my all aluminum trailer

by:

Great purchase! Very happy , strong so far and definitely goes up straight no lean , my boat is a 24 grady white, eith fuel vlose to 8000, jacks no problem, i put the boat off the trailer in winter and this jack did its job no problem! U wont be disappointed

by:

This Jack was on my Tricker Trailer when new. Broke the gear inside and replaced it with a cheaper jack..... you get what you pay for. Looks good, works good and now that I found etrailer.com I can order parts as needed. Etrailer has great Customer assisantant and follow up was exceptional.

by:

Wow. I cringed on the price but what a great tongue wheel. The double wheels roll very smooth and it looks on my custom trailer

by:

Overall a very good product so far. I have only used it for a little under a year, but have had no mechanical issues with it. The crank works well, the wheels roll ok for holding up a 23' fiberglass Hurricane. The only minor design change that I would make would be to the placement of the unlocking pin. Being that it is tight to the inside of the trailer tongue makes it harder to grab and can become a knuckle scraper.

by:

Fast shipment thanks!

by:

I installed this jack on a 22' boat trailer due to having 2 previously installed jacks fail. No such problems with this jack. It really is heavy duty. I can now maneuver the boat tongue around without the jack collapsing. Great product and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

OK, so its been a year now with the Fulton Jack and I still think it is the best one I have ever owned.

by:

I've used Fulton trailer jacks for over 40 years. The F2 1600 lbs rated jack is the finest one they've designed to date. It lifted my trailer with a 3 ton boat with ease. It does jack up and lower faster than my old Fulton. I'm very pleased with this one, plus it was offered by etrailer.com at a much more reasonable price than West Marine.

I bought two of these Great trailer jacks and both boats couldnt be happier. Good construction. Jacking is faster than my old ones. Couldnt be more pleased. Thank you for offering a good quality product. And better price the West Martine.

by:

What a great jack! Smooth operation and lots of inquiries as to where I purchased it. Thanks to my wife, I am the only one at the boat ramp, but that will probably change soon!

by:

Jack mounts and works as it should. U bolts for mounting we included, but standard bolts, as needed for my trailer were not.

Everything is working well. The parts were used on a Trailor for my smoker.

Best trailer jack for salt water use I ever bought! And I have bought plenty! Until this one, most other brands rust out and lock in a little as a year. This one is worth the money! Only thing I wish the plastic wheels would be a little bit more robust.
George from etrailer is awesome when it comes to customer service and ensuring customer satisfaction. etrailer exceeded my expectations. THANK YOU George!

by:

I just installed this tongue jack on my snowmobile trailer. It is definitely a well engineered burly product - heavier than I expected. The installation was straight forward with no surprises. Everything need was provided. The trailer is in storage until next season, so I can't offer any further information at this time. I will probably buy another one for my boat trailer. These are absolutely better than the cheap light weight jacks on most trailers.

by:

This was absolutely the best trailer jack I could find. It doesn't disappoint. It doesn't rust after 1 year outside. Double wheeled so you can pull it in the grass. Break so it doesn't move on a slight incline. Just a great product.

by:

This jack worked great helping me move my trailer around in my garage. I recommend it to anyone who has a single wheeled trailer jack and needs to move their trailer around on a hard surface.

by:

Excellent trailer jack. Dual wheels lock to prevent movement. Square lift tube prevents wheels from spinning when not in contact with ground. Swing mechanism works well. Very heavy duty construction. Handle is plastic but must be lexan or something similar because it's incredibly strong. Worth every dollar.

by:

Great tongue jack and it has only collapsed once. I reckon it didn't get latched in correctly.

Jim B.

5/3/2018

The trailer Jack is still fine.

by:

FINALLY! Tired of mickey mouse folding trailer wheels? Look no further than this humdinger. Buy two. Your buddy will want one and you can gift a lasting smile. Cheap? Well, no. But mine has easily outlasted lesser units at the hands of my yard apes, and they want me to put them on all the trailers

by:

I've owned this jack for a year now, and it works as well as the day I bought it. I really like the safety of having the dual wheels, as my trailer has a long (detachable) tongue. If I were you reading this, I wouldn't hesitate to spend the extra money on a superior product.

  • Distance From Mounting Bracket U-Bolt To Ground On Fulton Jack # F1413020134
I pulled the Fulton F2 Swing-Up Trailer Jack, part # F1413020134, from our warehouse and took a photo and some measurements for you. This jack has dual 7 inch wheels and features a sidewind handle. The jack has an adjustable mount, and is a bolt-on installation, and does feature a swing-up option. This jack fits up to 3 inch by 4 inch tongues, and has a weight capacity of 1600 lbs. I moved the mount to the position that would be lowest on the jack leg and measured the distance from the...

  • What Is the Difference Between Bolt Patterns on Fulton F2 F1413020134 and F1413050334
Yes. The bolt patterns that were referred to in the videos are actually the same and in reality the .06" is a negligible difference that falls within a reasonable margin of error; I believe that on the # F1413050334 measurements were performed with a calipers where the measurement on the # F1413020134 were performed with a tape measure/ruler. These two jacks are extremely similar but the # F1413050334 has a locking mechanism on the handle to eliminate the handle free-swinging when you...

  • Recommended Replacement Bolt-On Trailer Jack with 1500-lb Capacity and 11" Bracket Height
I have a solution for you, but the bracket height of the Dutton-Lainson Round Trailer Jack # DL22210 has a bracket height of 16-5/8", so it would not be short enough to be used on your trailer. I recommend usinig the Fulton F2 Swing-Up Trailer Jack # F1413020134 which has an adjustable bracket that when at its lowest setting is approximately 11" from the ground to the center of the bracket. This is a dual wheel, swiveling jack that can provide up to 10" of lift and has a 1600-lbs capacity....
