Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - 28-5 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the front, center, or rear hanger for double eye springs. This hanger can be used as a front hanger on single axle applications and it can be used as a front, center, or rear hanger on tandem or triple axle applications. It's designed to fit 1 3/4 inch wide double eye springs with 9/16 inch diameter eyes. It will work with a 9/16 inch diameter bolt. Your hardware is sold separately. The units made from a sturdy steel construction that measures around 3/16 of an inch thick. It is a weld on application so it would get welded directly to the trailer frame. The holes on the top are not for a bolt on installation.

These holes are for if the installer would like to use button welds instead of or in addition to welding around the hanger. The height measurement for a hanger is taken from the center of the mount hole to the top of the hanger so for this particular unit it's going to give us a height measurement of 3 1/4 inches. The overall length of the unit edge to edge going this direction we're looking at a measurement of 3 inches. The overall height, that's going to give us a height of around 3 13/16 of an inch. When it comes to the width, measuring the external width first, that's going to measure about 2 3/8, internal width is going to measure about 1 7/8 - 1 15/16 of an inch. Then all the holes on the unit are going to have a diameter of 9/16 of an inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the front, center, or rear hanger for double eye springs..

These hangers are great for the center. They provide just enough clearance for your equalizer. Because of the length and being that I am a welder I added a support inside the hanger to keep them rigid!

by:

great product and your staff was very knowledgeable and helpful I have told many friends about it and I will use your company again when needed

by:

Megan was very helpful with helping get this order together and communicating with parts being shipped from other locations. Thank you so very much Megan!!!!

Really like dealing with e-trailer, but am rather disappointed with the Hangers I ordered. They were smashed so hard in the die press during manufacture, that I am concerned about stress cracks. I attached 2 pics, and you can see the steel was slammed so much that it literally pinched it over a sixteenth of an inch at the base of the ears. Sad thing is, I don't have alot of time, and am forced to use them. I hope they don't break. The hangers I got in a previous kit seemed fine. I wonder why these should be different.

Fantastic product. Just wish your shipping was faster

by:

Product was high quality, arrived quickly and worked well!

by:

Etrailer is always wonderful to deal with. From full suspension kits to simple hangers, i always get more than i expect.

by:

I rebuilt the under carriage of my older trailer and purchased parts from etrailer. I replaced single leaf spring with their 5 leaf springs and used their heavy duty suspension kit and heavy duty hangers. Everything works great and would recommend etrailer parts to anyone. Great prices and great and friendly service.

Still satisfied with the products I bought through etrailer! Works great!

by:

Service from E trailer is outstanding. Everyone does there utmost to insure that you are more than satisfied with the product and service.
Having said that, I need to be honest about the hangers I received. I have purchased these same hangers 3 times and in each case the holes for the 9/16" bolts were drilled off of perpendicular as they should be. It is not enough to create a problem but it is clearly not the way the holes should be drilled.

by:

This bracket is better than the original factory one!

by:

E-Trailer always has what I need good products good service fast shipping at reasonable prices!!

by:

I have never used these to comment. I carry them in case of a catastrophic failure, to have on hand to do a road repair.

by:

I purchased the parts I needed to repair the suspension on an old Lil-Rider trailer. Knowing else had anything close to what I needed. The parts came quickly and we're exactly as advertised.

by:

The spring hangers I ordered are a fine product. I was planning to use some existing rectangle tube to make my own, but what with time constraints, I decided to order these from etrailer. I am glad I did. I couldn't have made them any nicer, I would have only burned time trying. I could have made them as good, yes. I have the tools to do so. But I could not have made them as nice as these in a short period of time. Great purchase, and it allowed me to work on other aspects of the trailer while these shipped. Shipping was quick too, all around a great deal.

by:

I have built several trailers in the past and I am currently building a tilt bed car trailer. I have made several purchases from etrailer.com They are great people to deal with and all of the products that I have purchased have met or exceeded my expectations. The spring hangers are well formed with no distortion and true to specifications. Highly recommend etrailer.com

by:

Delivery was as promised and all parts were there. Great service. Raised 5th wheel 4 3/4 inches so it would be level when hooked up to 2016 Ram 2500.

by:

As usual, etrailer does the job and faaast shipping!!!
I will use these spring brackets to move my trailer axles forward and reduce tongue weight.

by:

Great service, fantastic shipping and delivery. All pieces of the suspension repair of my tandem trailer fit perfectly! I have another trailer to repair and I will be ordering my parts from etrailer.

by:

I ordered two trailer leaf hangers and a 10,000 trailer jack. The price was as cheap as I could find anywhere and super fast shipping! Thanks
Will be a return buyer.

by:

Easy to install and and the trailer I rebuilt is awesome now.

  • Lifting My 5th Wheel With Axles Under Leaf Springs
You will not be able to use a lift kit since your axles are already under the springs. Your only option is to go with taller hangers. You will have to measure the height of your existing hangers and use the weblink I will be including below to find the size hangers you need. When you are measuring the height of your suspension hangers, such as product # 28-5, please remember that distance is from the top of the hanger to the center of bolt hole. I have also included a product description link.

  • Can Shackle Straps Be Used at the Front and Back of a Leaf Spring
Usually, you do not put shackle straps on the the front and back. One end the the spring should be suspended from a hanger. The reason that shackle straps are needed is to compensate for the extra drop of something like an equalizer or shorter hanger and to allow the spring to have the proper range of motion it requires. To use shackle straps in both places you would have to have hangers of different height. I have included a link to our FAQ article on double-eye trailer suspension that...

  • Way to Lift Trailer that Already Has Axles Under Leaf Springs
The only option we would have would be to install taller suspension hangers on your trailer. You would first need to measure the height of your current hangers and then check out the link I attached which has all the hangers we carry. You will then need to select from the filters which size you need.

  • Replacement Hangers for 2018 Grand Design Reflection 303RLS
Finding replacement hangers for your 2018 Grand Design Reflection 303RLS will require measuring your existing hangers. We have no way of looking them up and although Grand Design does a great job listing parts, they don't list the hangers. We know that the width of your hanger is 1-3/4" since that is the standard for double-eye leaf springs. What you need to find is the height, which is the distance from center of bolt hole to top of hanger. This is listed as B in the diagram below. For...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Hangers For Escort/Calkins Tandem Axle Trailer With Offset
The Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs - 3-1/4" Tall # 28-5 would require a similar offset your escort/calkins tandem axle trailer to accommodate for the offset due to the slant you have. This hanger will work with leaf springs that are 1-3/4" wide.

  • Is There a Weight Capacity for the Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs - 3-1/4" Tal
The Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs - 3-1/4" Tall part # 28-5 does not have a weight capacity nor can I say I have seen this on any leaf spring hangers really but there will be no issues with a 5,200 lb axle. When you get up around 10,000 axles you'll start to see wider springs which would then rule these out as they are for the standard 1-3/4".

  • Will Increasing Spring Shackle Length Allow More Clearance Between Tires and Fenders
Because a suspension is not static but is meant to articulate, going with longer shackle links won't provide the clearance you're looking for. The best course of action would be to raise the fenders to provide the proper clearance. At the very least, you want to see at least 3 inches of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender with the suspension at full load. A better bet for gaining height would be to go with taller spring hangers. Keep in mind that the amount by which...

  • Angle Of Shackles On Trailer Appear Wrong When Installing Leaf Springs
Ff the springs you are installing are 25-1/4 inches, you would need to place the hangers between 24-3/4 and 25 inches apart. The shackle should be angled as the drawing shows in the attached helpful article, which should be toward the rear of the trailer. Make sure the trailer is not under load when you are installing the hangers and it never hurts to double check the measurements of the springs and the hanger locations as well.

  • Why Should Trailer Axles Be Close Together
If you spread tandem axles to far apart you end up causing tire scrubbing which means that when you are making tight turns the axle with less weight on it will be skidding around on the pavement which cause premature tire wear. You want to have the axles as far apart as the spring and hanger kit recommends for the best performance. For more information on trailer suspensions setups check out the link I attached.

  • Can a Trailer with Axles Over Leaf Springs Be Lifted
If your axles are already above the leaf springs the only way to increase the height of the trailer is to install taller hangers. You should note that this route isn't going to give you a dramatic lift. The biggest issue your setup has is the tall rims and tires on your trailer. Normally trucks with lifts or large wheels can't tow fifth wheel trailers easily. If you are within a couple inches of being able to tow your trailer level without overhang/bed rail interference you could go...

In order to replace a leaf spring hanger you'll need to measure the existing to ensure you get the correct type and height. • Suspension Setup Recommendation for a Camper Trailer that Will be Taken Offroad
Leaf springs aren't any more designed for off-road use than slipper springs. What I would recommend is a Timbren axle-less system as they offer the best ground clearance since they do not have an axle that runs across the trailer. I attached a page that has all of the Timbren systems we offer for you to check out. You will want to pick out the system with enough capacity for the weight of your trailer and the same bolt pattern as your trailer wheels. For even more ground clearance some...

  • Recommended Parts and Installation for Replacement Tandem Trailer Suspension
If a part of your spring hanger broke off I recommend replacing it entirely rather than re-welding the broken piece. Even if you got the alignment perfect, the hanger could be weakened due to the repair so its best to replace the whole hanger with a new one. If it were to break you'd have a lot more work on your hands than just replacing the hanger. • Single Axle Trailer, Should the Hanger or Shackle Be on the Front of the Trailer Frame
It sounds like you have a single axle trailer and are curious about whether or not to put the hanger like the part # 28-5 or a shackle in front on the trailer frame. We recommend you put the hanger in the front. The force from the bumps in the road not only pushes up on the suspension but it also pushes the axle to the rear of the trailer. Having the shackle in the rear allows that rearward shock get absorbed better as it allow for slight movement rearward.

  • What Is the Hole Spacing of the Leaf Spring Hanger 28-5
The holes atop the Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs part # 28-5 are spaced 1-3/4" apart on center. Please note these are not bolt holes as leaf spring hangers cannot be bolted to the frame because they must be welded. The holes atop this hanger are for weld buttons to help keep them in place.

  • Can Leaf Spring Shackle Straps Be Installed Between Leaf Spring and Front Spring Hanger
On a single axle trailer, the shackle straps must be to the rear of the axle, attaching the leaf spring to the spring hanger. This allows the axle to deflect upwards and to the rear if you hit a bump. If the shackle was at the front, the axle wouldn't be able to deflect in the correct direction, which would result in suspension components, likely the spring hangers to be damaged.

If you can give me some more information on how many leaves you currently have on your leaf springs and what the eye-to-eye measurement is as well as your axle weight rating I can see if we have leaf springs that you can use. The suspension in general on your trailer looks very worn. I would replace as much as I could on it to get it back to good working order. The problem with the equalizer cocked to one side like that can happen sometimes. It usually fixes itself when a load is put on the trailer. What I recommend though is to jack up the trailer and use a pry bar to get the leaf spring end up above the equalizer so the equalizer is straight and then let the trailer back down. • Will Longer Leaf Spring Shackle Links Provide More Clearance Between Tire and Underside of Fender
There are a few ways to gain additional clearance between your tire and fender, but going with longer shackle straps won't accomplish what you're looking for. The best way to proceed would be to either raise the fenders, if possible or go with taller spring hangers. Keep in mind that because a suspension articulates, going with a one inch taller hanger won't necessarily provide an additional inch of height. Going with a smaller diameter wheel/tire combo would work as well.

If you replace your current equalizer with one that is longer, you would have two options. One would be to find shorter springs but the easier option would be to move the spring hangers further...
