Video Transcript for Review of TruRyde Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension - Suspension Bolt and Locknut - TRFA73Z916DLNZ

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the three inch long, 9/16 diameter Zinc Shackle Bolt with the locknut for your trailer leaf springs. Now, this 9/16 diameter shackle bolt is used to mount your leaf spring to your trailer's front or rear suspension hanger, and this part will include the locknut that secures the bolt to the hanger. Both these parts are a corrosion resistant zinc finish. This is for a quantity of one bolt and one locknut. Now, few dimensions, we'll start with the bolt itself, we mentioned the diameter on this, it's gonna be right at 9/16 of an inch.

The bolt head size or the socket size you would use on this, it's gonna be 13/16 of an inch. Now, the length under the bolt head to the very end of the bolt is gonna be right at three inches, the usable length, which would be from under the bolt head to where the thread starts, is 2 3/8 inches, and just the thread length is about 5/8 of an inch. Now, the thread size on this is 9/16 by 18 threads per inch, and the lock nut, which will install right on here, when you go to install it, that's gonna have a diameter or head size of 7/8 of an inch. But that should do it for the review on this three inch long, 9/16 diameter Zinc Shackle Bolt with the locknut for your trailer leaf springs.

Parts are a 5, delivery options questionable. Can't delivery 10 pounds of metal in a paper mailer. Was tore open on the bottom. I run a mailing business and I can tell you its not that much more expensive to use a box.

New bolts made replacement of springs e asy

by:

Ideally, the shoulder of the bolts should be long enough to extend all the way through the spring and shackle so that the threads are not subject to load or moving parts. The treads are the weakest portion of any bolt and should only be exposed to tension, not sheer loads. This being trailer hardware, I guess that design factor is not a high priority. Just seems like it could be done right with just a smidge more effort or consideration. That said, the original bolts I removed had only a slightly longer shoulder and one-half the shackle was riding on threads and it held up for years, although it was worn considerably more in the threads.

Good quality shackle bolts. Would buy a gain!

What can I say they are bolts they are still bolted in!

Wth rusted out leaf springs on my trailer but with zero experience replacing them, I contacted etrailer and Shawn was very helpful in selecting the right parts and taking me through the process. She was patient in terms of helping me take the right measurements and suggesting the bolts and pieces I needed to do the job right.

Everything came well packaged and complete two days later. An hour after that the springs were in my trailer and now has a boat sitting on it.

Thanks!

by:

Can't ask for anything else

by:

I have not been able to use parts as UPS lost one entire shipment, damaged another shipment and etrailer left some parts out of the replacement shipment. I want to replace all the items on my trailer together in one day.

Anyways, your company has been good about fixing the issues.

I hope UPS pays for the damage and lost shipments.

by:

They seem good. These and shackles need to be checked every season or two.

by:

We appreciate your great service!

by:

we plan on doing more business our trailer seem to be a hit see attached photo

by:

Serrations did not get a good bite into bracket.

I am completely satisfied with service and the product that I purchased from etrailer.com. The measurements and specifications on the web site were complete and accurate. Shipping was prompt and the parts were packed more carefully than anything that I have purchased online. Installation of my replacement leaf springs went seamlessly which I really appreciated as I had to leave my broken trailer at my hunt camp and had limited tools to do the repair.

I can't recommend etrailer.com highly enough. They are now my first choice in trailer parts.

  • Replacement Suspension Bolts For A 3,500lb Axle
Hey Corey, Bolt grades for leaf spring suspensions can range from grade 5 to grade 8, with the consensus being that grade 8 is the most preferred. For a 3,500lb axle the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut # TRFA73Z916DLNZ would be a compatible replacement. When removing the old bolt and installing the new bolt I recommend using a second wrench to make sure the head of the bolt doesn't spin as these have splines to help grip the bolt hole.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Suspension Bolts Splines that Aren't Seating
Have you tried tapping the bolt in with a hammer? Hopefully not much force would be needed. Ideally you get the splines seated all the way but then you don't have to really torque the nuts down as the bolt needs to allow the suspension to move. You might open up the holes a bit more to allow the splines to fit through if they are being stubborn.

  • Gaps Between Shackle Bolt Heads and Shackles on Double-Eye Trailer Suspension
For a 9/16 inch shackle bolt such as # TRFA73Z916DLNZ you will want 65 to 95 foot pounds of torque. Provided that you are within that range you won't over-torque the nuts. A little bit of play is expected but large gaps could be taken up using washers. The spring eye does need to be able to move though so it can't be sandwiched between the shackles too tightly.

  • Is Lock Nut with Nylock Difficult to Thread Onto Bolt
Nuts that have Nylock built into which is what prevents them from backing off over time. It's what makes them a "lock nut". The downside is they can be a bit difficult to thread on since it has to be super tight. You still might verify that the nuts is the correct size for the bolt and you aren't cross-threaded. If you remove the nut does the threads on the bolt looks damaged where the nut was? If so, it's not the right size or it's cross threaded.

  • Trailer Suspension U-Bolt and Shackle Bolt Torque Values
The axle U-bolt torque spec will depend on the bolt diameter- • 5/16 inch- 65 ft/lbs • 1/2 inch- 45-70 ft/lbs • 9/16 inch- 65-90 ft/lbs • 5/8 inch-100-120 ft/lbs • 3/4 inch-160 ft/lbs Shackle bolts don't typically have a specific torque value. They're usually tightened until the knurled portion of the bolt pulls completely into the shackle strap and the bolt head is ran all the way down to the shackle strap and you have at least 2 threads extending past the face of the nut. • Will Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit Help With Up and Down Movement Of Trailer
It sounds like you have a lot of up and down movement in your travel trailer while going down the road. The Road Armor Shock Absorbing Kit part # LC696740 is a better option then the MORyde kit to help eliminate some of that movement because it provides about 3" more of suspension travel capability for a smoother ride. The cushioned Road Armor system will absorb the road shock to help eliminate the up and down movement you are experiencing. I have attached the dimensions of the equalizers...

  • Are Other Parts Required When Replacing Trailer Equalizer With Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers
I have attached a photo of the Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers, part # LC279688 you can check out. The dimensions are noted on the photo. As long as your axle is within the 6,000 to 8,000-lb capacity these will work for you. While you are changing out the equalizers you may want to consider new bolts and nuts. I recommend part # TRFA73Z916DLNZ. This is a Zinc shackle bolt with a locknut.

  • Will the Never Fail Bushings Work On a Grand Design Momentum
The Never Fail Bushings part # LC279684 will work with pretty much any trailer with double eye leaf springs. The double eye leaf springs must also be 1-3/4" wide but this is pretty much standard for double-eye leaf spring so as long as you have double eye leaf springs then you should be just fine. Please note, it will be a good idea to replace the eye bolts when you are switching out the bushing so for this you can use part # TRFA73Z916DLNZ.

  • Is There a Suspension Kit with 5-1/2" Long Straight Equalizers
I do have an option for you though we don't really have all inclusive kits for this. The equalizer you need is the Straight Equalizer for 1-3/4" Double-Eye Springs part # TREQR2 which measures 5-1/2" long. Then for the shoulder bolts you can use the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut for Double-Eye Springs part # TRFA73Z916DLNZ. I have attached our leaf spring and shackle strap selection below as well but I would need to know the length and capacity for the springs and the length for the shackles...

  • Is Road Armor Equalizer Upgrade Better Than MORryde
You will definitely want to go with the Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit # LC696740 over the MORryde as the Road Armor has more travel and will provide a smoother ride. Then, in regards to shackle straps I'm not sure what you mean by which would be more affected. You will want to go with shackle traps that are the same size if your current equalizer is the same dimensions as the Road Armor. As far as the leaf springs are concerned, they only need to be replaced if they are damaged...

  • Should Nuts and Bolts Be Replaced When Installing New Trailer Equalizers
The bolts would have the same thread pitch as the nuts. The reason why you could only get the nut tightened a few threads is because the nuts that are used are lock nuts. It is recommended to use new hardware, nuts and bolts like the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut, part # TRFA73Z916DLNZ, when replacing the equalizers. You would need to measure your old hardware to determine which replacement bolts you will need. I have linked all the suspension bolts we have available and a video of...

Yes, technically if you already have something like the Wet Equalizer Bolt with Locknut and Grease Zerk for Double-Eye Springs - 3-5/16" Long # 126B2, and assuming you were able to get the grease out of the wet bolt and it was kept grease free, you could use them with the Never Fail Bushings. • Will Putting Axle In Backwards Cause Trailer Brakes To Not Function?
The reason your brakes are no longer functioning, is that they are actually directional with the front and rear pads being different. Since the axle is backwards meaning the brakes are backwards the brakes will not function. To fix this you will need to remove the axle and turn it around. As long as the shackle bolts are not rusted, you will have no issues reusing them. If they have any damage though I would go ahead and replace them for peace of mind.
