Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins Replacement Breakaway Pin and Cable - HM20012

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Hopkins replacement breakaway kit, cable and pin. Now this is going to replace the pin and cable for your older style Hopkins breakaway switches. Now this is gonna work for the three models that you see on the screen there. So if you have any one of those you can trust this is gonna be exactly what you need to replace that original breakaway pin and cable. Because this is a direct replacement from Hopkins, you don't have to worry about compatibility issues or anything like that.

So it is gonna fit right in place of that original pin so that if you we're to ever come disconnected, that would pull out and apply your the brakes on your trailer. So having the the right pin is gonna be important. Make sure that you're gonna be safe and this is gonna be the right pin that you need. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com.

Recently bought a pin & lanyard for my trailer breakaway system. The unit is a perfect fit. Great price. Shipped quickly and shipped in a good secure package. I talked to the staff and they directed me to the correct item. Had the unit in my hand in just a few days. What a great place to buy service items for my car hauler.

There's no way to tell what Hopkins brakaway box I have so this one will not work. But I have to pay to send it back. I couldn't even find a replacement. So after I have removed the old box and take it to my r v dealer so I'm going to spend more money for what I thought was a easy fix.

This pin is for use with the old style Hopkins Break-Away switches: HM20005, HM20012 and HM20014. I reached out to the manufacturer who advises that the best way to determine what breakaway system you have is to look online for one that looks similar, whether it is a 20099 or a 20400 or any variation of those base models.

by:

I bought 2 different ones at different times for the Hopkins control and neither fit…..

We ordered the breakaway cable and pin to have as an extra in our TOAD. We tested it and it works well. The car will not run if someone has pulled the breakaway pin. It's great to have a spare in the glove compartment in case some prankster decides to remove the pin in the parking lot!
erailer was easy to order from and delivered when they said they would.

I was looking for these replacement pins for awhile. I always was concerned that I would come out to my vehicle and find my pin missing and my vehicle disabled. I carry an extra one for my vehicle and trailers to avoid being stranded.

I had been having a hard time finding these replacement parts for my business, I finally found etrailer and they had the exact part I needed, IN STOCK. I ordered a ton of them. Shortly after placing my order I got an email telling me that they did not have my full order in their warehouse but would get my part to me asap. Ended up getting two shipments to get all my parts, which is amazing considering how many I ordered. My order was not only fulfilled but done so quickly and with great communication thru the entire process. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME WITH THESE!

Exact replacement for the breakaway switch on my BigTex 12PI trailer. Unfortunately, I broke the old pull tab off in the switch while trying to remove it to put in the new one. Now I have ordered a new breakaway switch to replace the existing one.

  • Cable For Breakaway Switch
I think what you are looking at is the breakaway wire and that should be independent, not weaved through the safety chain. If you need a replacement, please identify what manufacturer you have that I may provide you the best recommendation. If you have a Hopkins, you will need the Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Kits, # HM20012. Another commonly used is the Dexter Trailer Breakaway, # K71-691. If you have something other than one of these two manufacturers, please let...

  • Solution for Needing Replacement Breakaway Pin for Unknown Switch
That looks very similar to the Replacement Breakaway Switch part # 3802348 from Bright Way Group. But when it's unknown like this the best solution is an entire new switch setup like # 3802348 since unlike the pins the switches are all universal with each other.

  • Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Switches 20005 and 20014
Choosing the correct replacement cable and pin for your 20005 and 20014 Hopkins breakaway switches will depend on the style of key that they accept. Hopkins changed the style of keys that their breakaway switches accept, but kept the part numbers the same. If you have the newer style switch that has a cross design in the pin hole that is 2-3/16 inches long, then you will need the replacement cable and pin, # HM20051. If you have the older style switch that requires a key with multiple...

  • Replacement Brake Away Cable For Frayed Trailer Breakaway Cable
You can trim your current Breakaway Cable # HM20012 and fasten a new loop as long as you ensure it is long enough to not activate the brakes when you are turning your trailer. You will need to ensure that the repair is strong enough and that the remaining portion of the cable is still in good condition. I recommend replacing the cable with either the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140 or replacing the entire switch with the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with...

  • Replacement Pin For Trailer Breakaway Kit
We have several replacement pins for breakaway kits. They are designed to work with specific breakaway boxes. We will need to know what manufacturer and model breakaway kit you have on your trailer to be able to recommend the right replacement pin. For example, if you have a Hopkins Breakaway switch 20005, 20010, and 20014, the replacement pin is part # HM20012.

  • Replacement Breakaway Cable and Pin for Hopkins
The Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Kits # HM20012 is what you need. You will simply pull the pin from your breakaway just like you would to test the breakaway system and then reinsert the new pin. It takes a little bit of force but shouldn't be too difficult to pull. You can pull on the remaining cord length or you can use a pliers on the pin itself if no cord remains. If the pin is too difficult to pull then use # HM20010 to replace the holder as well.

  • Replacement Break Away Pin for Hopkins Engager Break Away System
The Engager is the model name of the break away system manufactured by Hopkins. A replacement switch is available as part # HM20060. The switch features an LED that will tell you at a glance that your break away battery is fully charged and ready to go. If it's just the cable and pin you need, Hopkins currently offers two differently shaped pins, part # HM20012 and # HM20051, as you can see in the provided photo. If you don't know which one you need, you'd be better off replacing the...

  • Replacement Breakaway Switch Pin for 5th Wheel Trailer
A lot of breakaway cable pins have a similar design that looks like the Hopkins # HM20012 and they can be interchanged. There are a few oddball ones out there though so if you could send me a picture of your cable pin and how much length you need for the cable I can see if we have something compatible. I have attached a link to our selection of replacement breakaway switch pins that you can also filter through. The breakaway kit should only be connected to the 12V lead, your brake circuit,...

  • Replacement Breakaway Pin Recommendation
It looks like the Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins LED Breakaway Switches # HM20051 appears to be the closest match to your provided photo, if you can let me know what breakaway kit you have I can confirm the fit. The breakaway pin essentially holds two pieces of metal apart. Once pulled out it allows the 2 pieces of metal to touch completing the circuit between the breakaway battery and the trailer brakes. All you would have to do to reset the system is put the pin back into the...

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Pin for Hopkins Engager
The easiest way for you to know which replacement cable and pin you need is by the type of switch your Hopkins Engager Breakaway Kit has. If you take a look at the accompanying photo showing the two pins you can see that they are different styles. So if your switch has a cross shape and the pin hole is 2-3/16" long you need the newer style Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins LED Breakaway Switches # HM20051, which you can see in the photo on the left. Otherwise you have have a switch...

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Pin and Cable for Hopkins Breakaway Kit
If you take another look at the photo I provided you can check out the styles of both Hopkins pins. Since you cannot find a part number the best thing to do is use this photo to determine the pin that you need, with the pin on the Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Kits # HM20012 having multiple prongs. If yours matches up this is the direction you should take. If you take another look and your pin looks more like the flat style of the Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins...

  • Replacement Breakaway Pin and Switch Recommendation for a Lost Pin
The easiest option you have that would make the most sense would be just to replace the switch and plug of your system. Especially considering how inexpensive they are. I would recommend you get the # HM20010. This will wire in to your system exactly your old one will and will provide you with a new switch and plug that will eliminate any guess work. Based on the picture you submitted the part # HM20012 would be too long to work as a replacement.

  • Replacement Pin Recommendation for Fastway Weight Distribution System
The only replacement pin I can recommend for a Hopkins breakaway kit is the part # HM20012. If you wanted the coiled design of the Fastway kit you'd need to replace the switch too with the part # FA80-00-2040 and you'd be set. While the pins aren't all universal between brands we've found that the switches are.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Lights On After Breakaway Switch Pin is Replaced on 5th Wheel Trailer
The breakaway kit should only be connected to the 12V lead, your brake circuit, and ground so having the pin pulled shouldn't be keeping your brake lights on. You may want to check your connector and wires that lead to the brake lights on your trailer to make sure power isn't jumping from the 12V or brake circuits over to the brake light circuit. I have attached a picture of a trailer-side 7-Way connector for you to reference for troubleshooting.
