how do you pull the pin out from the unit? my cable was dragging and now I need to replace it.

The Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Kits # HM20012 is what you need. You will simply pull the pin from your breakaway just like you would to test the breakaway system and then reinsert the new pin. It takes a little bit of force but shouldn't be too difficult to pull. You can pull on the remaining cord length or you can use a pliers on the pin itself if no cord remains.

If the pin is too difficult to pull then use # HM20010 to replace the holder as well.
