Video Transcript for Laclede 48 inch Long Safety Chain Review

Hi everyone, Aiden here at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to these Laclede safety chains. Let's check 'em out. So in total, everything is going to be 48 inches long. They attach on our trailer just right up here to this bolt on the coupler. And then on the end, we've got our seven 16th as hooks.

That will just latch onto your safety chain, loops like this and make sure that in the case of an emergency, your trailer isn't going down the road on its own. It'll keep it attached right here. Now these are gonna be a quarter inch diameter chain with a 5,000 pound break strength. So for our small trailer that we've got these hooked up to right now, that's gonna be more than enough. And then getting these installed is super easy.

Obviously it's going to differ a bit depending on the trailer, you're putting it on, but we'll show you how we got them on this trailer. Now the first step of the installation is gonna actually be for us replacing the old chains. So we're gonna get these removed. Now ours aren't necessarily in bad shape, but we're just kind of doing this for demonstration purposes. And on our trailer we'll want to remove this front bolt on the coupler, because our safety chains are actually fed through that.

So as I pull this bolt out, you'll see them fall just like that. And then all we have to do is take our new chains. I'm gonna kind of hold them up and find where the middle roughly is. Right there looks pretty good. So this is the link I'm gonna feed that bolt back through.

So I'll just kind of pop it up into there, hold it in place and feed that bolt back through, nice and secure. And then just run this nut down on the other side and we're all done. Then we're free to hook up to our vehicle and hit the road. And that'll do it for a look at these Laclede safety chains. Thanks for watching..

Prompt delivery & professionally packaged. Easy to install using the provided instructions. Total time to install receiver hitch and wiring kit on a 2013 Toyota Highlander was about 2 hours. I will purchase again from etrailer.com.....

A quality safety chain. I replaced the worn-out and rusted safety chains on my 16 foot utility trailer, and these chains greatly increased my peace of mind while towing. These are definitely worth the investment to ensure that your trailer doesn't become a projectile on the interstate should your hitch fail.

by:

There's not much I can say about safety chains other than they look strong enough to be safe. Thank God I haven't had a trailer break away from the truck but I am confident these chains would perform as well as any of the situation should arise.

Exactly as it was described! Exactly what I needed! Great product, Great prices, Great shipping & service. I would give etrailer.com more stars if I could!

Everything is still just as great as it was a year ago! No complaints from me. I hope to build myself another trailer in the near future, etrailer.com will be getting my business for what I need to complete that project once its time comes. Thanks, again.

Product was exactly what I needed since I had added an extended ball mount to allow me to open my tailgate with the camper attached. Great quality chain, heavy hooks, more stout than the one on the pop-up.

Service from eTrailer was excellent - confirmation email and personalized follow up emails - they shipped it the same day.

Shop here for all your trailer needs!!

This tow chain hook up for my pop-up is just what i needed and the delivery was quick.

Great chain, holding up better than the originals.

by:

When I ordered my Reese hitch extension, I purchased two of the 48" safety chains. The price that I got from etrailer was so much less than what the retail big box home improvement stores charge. The quality of the chains and hooks is excellent. I even got free shipping along with the hitch extension that I ordered. As always, excellent shipping and communication during the whole process.

by:

Much heavier than the safety chain I replaced. Only problem was that hooks would not fit through trailer loop. It was an effort, and required my large vice and sledge to open the hook end enough to remove chain. I used the sledge to tighten it up again. Excellent product.

by:

This was sent with a multiple order to fabricate a 36" extention to carry the rack n roll trailer for my kayaks with a Lance camper that overhangs my Chevy 4x4 PU.

The products are perfect and the employee crew of this company is top notch. Informed directly of receipt of the order, what items were there and what items would be there in 3 days and their promise of delivery was ironclad.

One of the most enjoyable transactions ever of multiple complicated products.

AAA+++

Heavier, and much stronger than the chain system I replaced. I would recommend this safety chain to anyone who values their trailer.

by:

Needed trailer chains , The chain does not fit the new bolts on the Atwood Actuator so I will purchase a different bolt. Overall exactly what I needed to get my trailer working again.

by:

Just what I needed to spruce up my boat trailer. Great quality at the very best price.

have not used these chains yet . I have them stored in my shop till I am ready to use them.

by:

I installed a swing tongue on my boat trailer. The instructions said that I needed to install safety chains behind the pivot point. I bought two of these chains, cut off ont hook off each and installed them with a 7/16" grade 8 bolt. Looks like they will work fine. The chains and hooks look like they are strong enough to do the job. Hopefully they will be rust resistant.

by:

Good heavy chain and hooks. I will be installing on my feed trailer that didn't come with safety chains. Product arrived two days after ordering. Very satisfying with the product and etrailer.

by:

I received the chain for the Reese Titan Hitch Box Extension. I am very pleased with the chain. Thank you

by:

This is a great product, chain and hooks all in one. Didn't realize at the time is was such a heavy chain. My small trailer is only 500 Lbs and could of got by with a lot smaller of a chain. It's now 510 lbs haha but it worked great.

by:

Nice safety chain. Just what I ordered. I would have preferred one with keepers on the hooks, but could not find one on the site.

by:

Great service and product quality for the price.
I did order the wrong size channel width on the Coupler, so have reordered the correct size. I'll find someone who wants the larger Coupler, as it would cost too much to return it.

Safety chain is good and strong.

by:

Safety chains for my car hauler were too small. etrailer had a good price on heavy duty ones.

by:

High Quality chains for safety use, used to retrofit trailers that did not have safety chains on them. We weld these on but they could be bolted.

by:

I got two of these to replace the ones I have destroyed over time using them with my tractor. These are heavier than my old ones and I expect they’ll outlast me. They appear to be great quality chains and were delivered quickly.

by:

This is a fast, low cost way to add or replace safety chains. Beats piecing it together at a big box store!

by:

This product is exactly as pictured, a 4 foot long piece of nickel plated chain with the special trailer hooks on each end. Looks well worth the money, to me.

by:

safety chains worked excellent, just wish they has an option for about a foot or 2 longer, 48" is longest size.

by:

Excellent, inexpensive, easy to install to get a 1958 Arrowhead trailer back into action!

  • Best Way to Get Longer Safety Chains on a Trailer
You can try using quick-links to add length to your safety chains, but your best option is going to be to use a different set of chains that are longer. For a 27 inch long chain rated at 5K, go with the # 2118-605-04. For a 48 inch chain with the same capacity, use part # 2118-348-04.

  • Recommended Safety Chains for 500 lbs Boat Trailer
For a 500 lbs boat trailer I recommend a 27 inch long chain rated at 5K, part # 2118-605-04. For a 48 inch chain with the same capacity, use part # 2118-348-04. One way to determine the length you will need is to connect your trailer to your tow vehicle, back your trailer up into a near jack-knife position and then use a rope to go from the safety chain attachment points of your trailer to your tow vehicle. Then measure the length of rope used and that will be the correct length of chain...

By turnbuckles, I am assuming you are referring to what we call Quick Links. The Safety Chain Quick Links item # RM-910022, can be used to attach the safety chains.

If you are talking about safety chains that act like a backup if the trailer should become disconnected, I recommend the Laclede Safety Chain , part # 2118-348-04. • Why do Safety Chains Have to be Behind Fulton Fold-Away Coupler
The chains need to be to the rear of the coupler of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 3" Tongue - Bolt On - Up to 5,000 lbs # FHDPB330301 because it is a DOT regulation, for which quality and reliability of a product has no bearing. Specifically it requires the chains to be attached to "any point to the rear of the attachment point" based on my research. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB330301.

The Westin Fey Surestep Rear Bumper - Black Powder Coated Steel # 61001 is rated to haul up to 3,500 lbs and will need a hitch ball with a 3/4 inch shank. I recommend # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or # C40001 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. The bumper has integrated holes for the safety chains on either side of the hitch ball. These holes will allow for the S-hooks of your safety chains like # 2118-348-04 to connect quickly and easily but are not compatible with clevis hooks. I've attached an image...

We have several 3 inch channel trailer couplers that could work for you (see link). For a 2,000 lb capacity coupler the Dutton Lainson part # DL13728 is a very popular option that would work well. I would have a qualified weldor, weld a Safety Chain Loop, # E950, to the bottom of the trailer frame and then attach safety chains, like part # 2118-348-04, with Safety Chain Quick Links, # 2114-553-04.

You will need to locate the safety chains before the cut that is made to install the Fold-Away Coupler Hinge, # FHDPB330301, to be in compliance with DOT regulations. Normally the chains are welded to the bottom or side of the trailer framing, and ran forward. I would have a qualified weldor, weld a Safety Chain Loop, # E950, to the bottom of the trailer frame, before the fold way cut, and then attach safety chains, like part # 2118-348-04, with Safety Chain Quick Links, # 2114-553-04....
